How did you get there? How long did it take, and how much was it?
I traveled to Cozumel via Cancun, and the journey was an adventure! I caught a Wednesday evening direct flight at 6 PM from LaGuardia and arrived in Cancun just around midnight. From there, it was super easy to hop on a bus to Playa del Carmen. The ride took about 45 minutes, and Playa del Carmen was the last stop, so there was no chance of missing it! I stayed in a cozy $35 Airbnb for the night.
The next morning, I caught a ferry to Cozumel, where Holland and Silverman had organized an incredible snorkel and scuba trip. On the ferry, I even bumped into Dylan, Ian, and Will Lewis—they were heading to Cozumel, too!
The round-trip flight from LaGuardia to Cancun cost me about $610. This year, though, I’ll be flying directly into Cozumel, which is a bit more convenient. Those flights usually have at least one stop, but they’re priced similarly to flights into Cancun—and you get to skip the bus and ferry. Definitely the way to go!
How much was the lodging?
I booked all my accommodations through Airbnb. In Playa del Carmen, I stayed in a charming Airbnb for just $35 a night. Once I got to Cozumel, I found plenty of affordable options. I stayed at a boutique hotel for $45 a night for four nights. It was perfect! The hotel had a lovely, quiet pool that felt like my private oasis. I shared the space with another tournament player, and it worked out great.
Was it easy to find lodging?
Absolutely! Finding a place to stay on Cozumel was a breeze. There are tons of reasonably priced, modern hotels and Airbnb options. Many were under $50 a night and were well-kept and comfortable.
Did you feel safe in Cozumel?
Yes, I felt completely safe throughout my trip. Cozumel had a calm, relaxed vibe, and the police presence was discreet but reassuring. Even late at night, I never felt uneasy—it was a very peaceful atmosphere.
How did you get around on Cozumel?
Getting around Cozumel was super convenient. After the ferry, taxis were everywhere and easy to find.
How much does it cost to get around?
The taxis were very affordable—most trips cost between $5 and $10.
How far is everything from each other?
Everything was close by! My hotel, the restaurants, and the municipal field where we played were all within a short 10 to 15-minute taxi ride.
Is it easy to get money?
Yes, it’s simple to access cash in Cozumel. There were about four ATMs within walking distance of the main markets, so getting pesos was no problem. Paying in cash is definitely the best way to go.
How expensive was food and drink?
Thanks to the exchange rate (17 pesos to $1 USD), food and drinks were incredibly cheap! Even alcohol was very affordable, making it easy to enjoy the local cuisine without breaking the bank.
Overall experience:
The trip was a huge success and so much fun! Holland, Matt Silverman, Henry, and Ainsley did an amazing job planning everything, making it such an enjoyable experience. Playing softball in the warm Mexican sun while everyone else was bundled up in freezing New York City was just the cherry on top.
It was such a fantastic trip that I’m already planning to go again this year, armed with a little more experience. I hope this testimonial answers your questions and inspires you to join us this time—we could definitely use more players!
