Playoff Round 2 Preview

Sat, Sep 17, 2016

Round 2 of the world famous WSL playoffs is upon us and the story lines are perfect. We are guaranteed to have a Cinderella team making it to Championship weekend. We have two huge offenses going up against each other in what should be a slugfest. We have a rematch of a 2-1 extra inning game from last year’s playoffs and we have the 2014 champs going up against the 2015 champs. It’s almost like a TV network planned this out to have maximum drama and a 30 minute special before each game.

GUTTER 86ers (5) vs BLACK BETTY (1) – 11am Field 1

Last year Black Betty and the Gutter 86ers were tied 1-1 in an extra inning playoff game when a Texas league single fell into a sweet spot between 2nd base, CF and RF which allowed the runner from second to score with 2 outs. After spending many seasons in the sub .500 world, the 86ers were one run away from making the finals. They get a chance for revenge when they face top seeded Black Betty and try to punch their ticket to back-to-back championship weekends. It’s not going to be easy for the 86ers. Despite an incredible game in last year’s playoffs, Black Betty holds a 5-0 record against the 86ers in the last two years and the 4 regular season wins were not close like the playoffs. Plus – Black Betty’s offense seems to be on fire now and the 86ers can have a little trouble putting runs on the board. Thankfully for the 86ers, they have a top 4 defense and had a strong second half offensively. It’s going to be important for the 86ers to keep the game close and try to strike in the later innings because once the Betty offense gets going it’s tough to beat them.

Vegas Line: Black Betty favored by 6.5

R BAR (3) vs TURKEY’S NEST (2) – 11am Field 2

Champs vs Champs… The winners of the WSL for the past two years face off for a chance to move on to Championship Weekend. While R Bar is the “visitor” for this match-up, they are the favorite coming in because they finished the season on a much stronger note and with a 2-win better record than the Nest. R Bar has now won 8 of their last 10 games and bring a great offense and improving defense to a Nest team that hasn’t beaten an above 500 team since May! For the Turkey’s Nest, they will look to recapture the magic of their 2014 playoff run and tap into their wealth of talent (much of which is still in place from 2014). When these two teams meet earlier in the season, R Bar won 13-8 so there’s little doubt that this will be a good game but all signs are pointing to R Bar moving on…. but we also thought Spike and St. Anselm would be playing this weekend so what do we know.

Vegas Line: R Bar favored by 4.5

THREE KINGS (4) vs KILO BRAVO (1) – 1pm Field 2

This is our favorite game of the weekend because it should be a bloodbath. If you are placing any bets on this game, put your money on the over. It would not surprise anyone if the combined score was more than 35. Kilo easily has the highest ranked offense in the league and Three Kings path to victory is almost always to out-slug the other team. They only faced each other once in the regular season and it was a surprising low scoring 12-8 win for Kilo but both teams are coming fully armed to this game so we think the outcome will be much different.

Vegas Line: Kilo favored by 3

SOFTSPOT RUNAWAYS (7) vs RSC (6) – 3pm Field 2

The Cinderella story match-up will ensure that either a 7 or 6 seed will be playing on Championship weekend. Awesome… Not sure where this falls in WSL history but it’s not common for a team with a below 500 record to make it to the final four. Both teams were better than there record but it’s shocking that they both made it to the second round. I guess this is why we play the games and don’t live or die based on records…. RSC started the season 0-7 and are now a home team in a playoff game. Crazy turnaround….  When these two teams meet during the regular season, it was a one run win for Softspot that was right in the middle of RSC’s amazing second half. We are predicting a low scoring, one run victory again but we have no idea who will take it.
