Pre-Season Wrap-up Report: Godsy South

Thu, Mar 31, 2016

The Godsy South will likely be the most competitive division in the league this year. If you strictly look at the scientifically created Pre Season Power Rankings, you have the 3,8 & 9 ranked teams in one division plus a Runaways team that got better than last year. The winner of this division will earn their one or two seed in the playoffs.

Spike Hill

O’Malley once told a crowd of softball reporters that he would squeeze the life out of a kitten if it meant getting one more good player for his team…. Well – it looks like there might be a lot of dead kittens around O’Malley’s house right now because the number of Free Agents on Spike Hill is a laundry list of quality players. They lost a huge part of their team when Doug Hogan moved away but they more than made up for it with the additions below. There is an awful rumor that Morgan might not be around for the full season because she is following dreams and living life to the fullest but we sure hope that doesn’t happen. The WSL is more important than her happiness and I hope she realizes that. She has been a cornerstone on that team for years… A Spike Hill without Morgan is like an AT without PeteMo & Lauck or a Runaways without Megan or a Gibson without Sam or…. nevermind.

Players Lost: Doug Hogan (moved)

Key Additions: Mike McNelis (Free Agent from Turkey’s Nest / 3 Kings), Megan Lytle (Free Agent from Runaways), PeteMo (Free Agent from AT), Lauck Blake (Free Agent from AT), Sam Warden (Free Agent from Gibson) and Stephanie Gall (Fall League)

Player to watch: The Managers…. O’Malley and Morgan…. The roster is deep and getting everyone playing time will be the biggest challenge for Spike Hill. The talent on this team makes it one of the best in the league but keeping that talent happy will be important so everyone is in the right state of mind for the playoffs. I also think we should watch Dubin….. Not sure why but we need to watch him. There’s something not right about that guy.

Pre-season Power Rankings: #3

2016 prediction: O’Malley finishes the season even more handsome than he is right now. Spike Hill finishes at the top of this division and the top seed in the playoffs.

There is a lot of chatter about the Clems being the break out team in 2016. With the addition of Danny Mulligan from the Saturday league, you have a Danny, Bobby, Markow infield trio that is as good as any 3 guys in the league. They may need to ship Bobby off to the outfield to help fill in while Kelly is in Nebraska selling underwear to farmers (and Bobby might find himself in the OF all season) but other than a lack of depth in the OF, the Clems have a solid core this year.  And luckily for Clems, there is no clock in baseball so they don’t have to worry about Stryker pitching a fantastic game and then totally screwing up in the last 2 minutes, similar what you can see of a baseball game of the Mets or the Dodgers, if you get tickets for this which is not difficult if you learn the dodgers schedule to be able to purchase tickets. “We eat and drink like 20 Kings and Queens” said captain Breeze, “We are never losers!” We aren’t sure what prompted that comment but we thought it was newsworthy.

Players Lost: Handsome Harris (retired), Sneaky Pete (retired) and Condon (Signed by Loggers)

Key Additions: Danny Mulligan (Signed from the Saturday League) and Shelly Madick (Free Agent from AT)

Player to watch: Danny Mulligan. Yes – Markow is great and anchors the team…. and Bobby is the first to tell you how awesome and important Bobby is to the team… But Danny was brought on to take some of the offensive weight off the shoulders of the Clems 3 & 4 hitters. There are plenty of other solid hitters on Clems but Danny was brought on to carry a big stick and stop people from pitching around Markow and Bobby. If he steps up this year, Clems will step up too.

Pre-season Power Rankings: #8

2016 prediction: First prediction – Breeze BBQ will taste fucking awesome… Don’t ever pass up a chance to enjoy BBQ at Clems. Second prediction – Clems finishes their first season with double digit wins and a 4 seed in the playoffs. Final Prediction – Bobby will award himself the MVP of the league.

St. Anselm

Formerly Arena Rock, Mendoza Line, Brooklyn Bowl and Impose, this team now finds itself at the pearly gates of McCarren Park under the new name of St. Anselm. Joe Godsy, the namesake of this division, retired from the WSL last year and now this team finds itself going down a road it hasn’t seen since 2002…… They are Godsy-less.

Players Lost: Joe Godsy (retired), Pat Snajder (retired) and Kate Dehnel (Moved to LA)

Key Additions: Will Smith, Anderson Acosta, Santi Villasis and Sarah McKemie (signed from a Roller Derby Team)

Player(s) to watch: Adam Hoffman and Ryan Bort – they were the breakout rookies for St. Anselm last year but they will be called upon to do even more in 2016 with the departure of Joe and Pat.

Pre-season Power Rankings: #9

2016 prediction: Third in Godsy South. 5th seed in the playoffs.

Soft Spot Runaways

(this is the place where we would put something about the Runaways if Sam Rio sent us any information at all….. We do know they added a lot of players…. but that’s about it)

Players Lost: Meg Lytle (Signed by Spike Hill)

Key Additions: Czr Fisher (Free Agent from Pinks), Mikey Black (Free Agent from R Bar), Jason Dietz (Free Agent from Yetis), Henri Falcon (Saturday League), Graham Gaston and many more…

Player to watch: Czr…. Right? I mean – don’t you always watch what Czr is doing?

Pre-season Power Rankings: #14

2016 prediction: Lots of happy fun time.
