Pre-Season Special: Manager’s Meeting Recap

Fri, Mar 4, 2016

New Divisions, New Team Names, New Rules and a New Head of WSL Umpires….

First off – who am I? For those that don’t know me (and for those that do), I’m one of a half dozen people that Holland has brought onto the WSL editorial team to help fill the massive void left when Editor-in-Chief Kristin “Shortz” Sears moved on to smaller and better things. Even with all the new WSL editorial firepower, it’s doubtful we will be as organized or as productive as when Kristin was running the show. I know that because just the other day Holland said “There is no way you guys are going to be as organized or as productive as when Kristen was running the show”. He has set the bar pretty low for us. He recently sent out an email to the group that basically said “You guys can write some stuff and post it when you can and like… whatever… just have fun”. Even in his most optimistic tone, it’s still drenched with doubt that anything good will happen. It reminded me of the way I spoke to my son before his basketball team played that undefeated team… I’m not sure what’s going to happen this year but I know that Holland will always love us.

2016 WSL Managers MeetingMy first assignment was covering the Managers Meeting. I was expecting yelling, arguing, debating… I was expecting some managers to make fun of other managers’ small hands or criticize other managers for not disavowing endorsements from the kickball league… I was expecting something like a 7th or 8th inning of a close game that included bad calls for both teams…. But no…. What I got was a room full of people who acted friendly to one another, talked in a civil manner and seemed to respect each other. It was impressive, surprising and to be honest, very disappointing. I’m not saying there isn’t big news because we have new divisions, new rules and a new head of umpires but it’s not a stretch to say I won’t be attending next year.

Leo_Making_Umps_Great_AgainThe highlight of the night was the introduction of the new HEAD OF UMPIRES – LEO OTERO. Everyone applauded and there seemed to be a universal trust from all teams that Leo would do a great job managing the umpires. Then Leo stood up and gave a passionate speech about how he was going to make WSL umpires great again. We all got energized… It was like we all allowed ourselves to forget that we were 30+ adults sitting in a room spending way too much time seriously discussing a softball bar league. We believed things were going to get better. Leo even promised to not allow the umps to be drunk or high during games and you could almost hear the Umpire Meeting RSVP list slowly decreasing one by one. Leo plans on calling a press conference in late March to share everything about his role and his umpire plans but trust me… This is the change you can believe in.

Here are some of the new rules that were approved by the WSL rules committee. For a complete list you can go to the rules page on the WSL website which will be updated as opening day gets closer.

  1. Two Strike Fast Pitch – If an umpire feels a pitch is too fast on a two strike count, the ump can call a dead ball and enforce the illegal pitch rule even if a batter swings. More detail will be shared prior to the season but the goal is to prevent pitchers from trying to sneak in a fast pitch and get a foul out or a bad swing.
  2. Girl Line Moved Back – Two seasons ago the line was at 80 feet. Last year it moved back to 85 feet. This year it’s being moved back again to 90 feet. (For D-Lo, the line is actually 120 feet but that’s just for your own good.) If an umpire sees outfielders creeping in on the pitch, the hitter will be awarded first base (or the batting team can elect to keep the outcome of the play if they choose). So guys… Simple rule… Don’t be creepy with the ladies
  3. 11am Forfeit Rule – All 11am games must start by 11:20 or the game is forfeited.
  4. Strike zone – There will be a more clearly defined Strike zone this season and all umpires will be required to be consistent with what is a strike. The league will share a diagram of the new strike zone before the first game. (That’s right… we are getting a fucking diagram.)

There are a few other rules about behavior and ejections/suspensions but all they really say are “Don’t be an asshole or you can’t play” so don’t be an asshole.

There are no new teams this year but some teams have changed names and sponsors. The changes are listed below:

  • Bedford is now SPIKE HILL
  • Enids is now KILO BRAVO
  • Impose is now ST. ANSLEM
  • Berry Park is now WINNIE’s TEAM
  • Crown Vic is now GUTTER
  • Loggers is now OVER THE EIGHT
  • Runaways is now SOFTSPOT

The new divisions were selected by the WSL Rules Committee based on grouping teams into similar skill levels and splitting them up into divisions. They rated teams based on last year’s performance as well as free agent moves and put the teams into tiers (Four Tier 1 teams, Four tier 2 teams, etc…). Then they randomly selected one team from each tier for each division. Here are the new divisions for 2016:

Godsy North

Black Betty

The Gutter (formerly Crown Vic)

Roebling Sports Club

Turkey’s Teachers

Godsy South

Spike Hill (formerly Bedford… formerly Spike Hill)

St. Anslem (formerly Impose)

SoftSpot (formerly Runaways)

Fashion North

R Bar

Kilo Bravo (formerly Enids)

Winnie’s Team (formerly Berry Park)

Fashion South

3 Kings

Turkey’s Nest

AT All-Stars

Over the Eight (formerly Loggers)

Based on discussions with all the managers, it appears this year might be the most competitive and balanced group of teams the league has ever seen. Going into the playoffs last season, there were 7 or 8 teams that had a legit shot at making the finals. It sounds like the managers are expecting even more this year.

Spring Training begins this Sunday – 3/6

Umpire meeting is 3/22

Season Opening Party is 4/2

Opening Day is 4/3

Playoffs are currently scheduled to start on 9/11

Finals are currently scheduled for 9/25
