Power Rankings: Pre-Season

Sun, Mar 27, 2016

“First you get the Sponsor, then you get the Players, then you get the POWER”…. We have gathered the latest data from various Williamsburg bars and put some of the brightest minds within the WSL together to form the first installment of the 2016 WSL Power Rankings. These will change week to week based on record, strength of schedule, prior week’s rankings and number of empanadas consumed. This league doesn’t have enough drama or debate so we figured we would add a weekly post that allows people to channel their anger from popping up in the 9th into something more tangible. At the very least, we have seen a drop-off on b-level actor pictures being posted on the WSL facebook page so we had to do something….

1. R Bar

How can anyone debate R Bar being the top ranked team going into the season? Sure – they lost a few guys but they also gained a few guys and their MVP (Bubbs) has two functioning ankles this year. Plus – they won the championship 6 months ago so until another team hangs an “L” in their record they will hold on to the top ranking.

2. Black Betty

They were in the finals last year… and while many people like to use terms like “lucky” to describe how they get there every year, you can’t deny that they had a 13 win regular season topped off with 3 more wins in the playoffs. They might be the luckiest team in the history of softball or they might have something going on. Either way, they go into the season with the #2 rankings based on how they closed out the season in 2015.

3. Spike Hill (formerly Bedford)

They have an excellent team and they added a few big pieces in the offseason. And now with McNelis on the team, all Spike Hill players will have the finest manicured lawns in the whole league. That alone will give them an extra win or two. We also noticed the number of bats O’Malley was selling on the WSL Facebook page last week and naturally drew the conclusion that he purchased “newer” and “more powerful” bats.

4. Three Kings

We know…. They lost in the playoffs to the 16 seed and it was the biggest upset in league history…. But until the playoffs they had a great regular season and was one of the highest scoring teams in the league. When the Three Kings are on, they are easily one of the strongest teams in the WSL. They dominated the first half of the season and looked like they were going to steamroll their way to the finals. They had a few rough games at the end of the season and it carried over into the playoffs but any team that overlooks Three Kings this year will likely be wishing the league had a slaughter rule.

5. Kilo Bravo (formerly Enids)

Rumor around the league is that Wally has finally started sharing his “Fountain of Youth” formula with other members of the team. They also added several new players including this intelligent looking gentleman with glasses that goes by the name of Michael Q. The Pinks are monsters during the regular season and last year was no different with a record of 14-4.

6. The Gutter 86ers (formerly Crown Vic)

They lost by one run in the quarter finals… One run away from the finals…. That’s a long way from their below 500 team of two years ago. Can they repeat their solid play in 2016 or was 2015 a flash in the pan? Time will tell but you have to respect what they did in 2015 and with most of the roster coming back they should be right in the mix in 2016. Plus – Mallory is back and her return will be a huge addition to the 86ers.

7. Turkey’s Nest

Coming off a 2014 championship season, it appeared Turkey’s Nest had a tough time getting over the championship hangover…. or maybe it was the night before’s hang over each week. Either way, they got lucky being in the weakest division in the league and secured the #2 seed in the 2015 playoffs but were dismantled by Enids in the second round. They still have plenty of talent so maybe a tougher division (which includes Three Kings) will keep them from sleepwalking through the season this year.

8. Clemerica

Clems starts off the season in the “top half” of the league and they could easily end up being the most improved team in 2016. To get the team in game shape for the 2016 season, Breezy forced several of his players to join a basketball team and play games at least once a week. Oddly enough, Breezy forgot to put himself on the team and ended up just playing ball in Marcy park with his fantastically named dog.

9. St. Anselm (formerly Impose)

Another solid season in 2015 but they were bounced in the first round of the playoffs by the 86ers. It’s likely St. Anselm will be moving up and down the rankings throughout the year. It wouldn’t surprise anyone if they snuck into the top 5 rankings at some point this season. A lot will come down to how they play against Clems now that the two of them are in the same division.

10. Bedford Yetis (formerly Berry Park)

This will be the first season that Winnie is in control of the team from opening day. We have no idea what he plans on doing with the team but the guy is still playing competitive softball at the age of 50 so he has to know something about the game. For all of us creeping into our 40s, Winnie is an inspiration. The Yetis added a few new players but they are the biggest wild card of all the teams. We have no idea what to expect from them (and neither do they).

11. AT All-Stars

AT lost some key players in the off-season and made a key ‘Super’ addition. Luckily for them (and the rest of the league), they have not lost their Tent. If we were ranking teams that do “Game Day” right, AT would own the top spot. By AT’s account, they were undefeated last year.  Gerald and his squad beat the upstart Clemerican’s last season in the 2nd round, proving the addition of Phrank (PH balanced for women) at 3B was no fluke.  Phrank’s phor real.  I also hear Vinny has decided to sell his place in Mexico and invest in a shiny new tent for his peeps.  He couldn’t stay away for that long.

12. Roebling Sports Club

There was big debate in ranking RSC. They finished in the bottom of their division last year (7th seed going into the playoffs) and they lost Mike Hogan who was a pillar on their team. But did you see the fight they gave Black Betty in the playoffs last year? They came back from 5 and 6 run deficits but ultimately lost by one run. Was that just heart or do they have budding talent that will make 2016 a much improved year?

13. Brooklyn Loggers (Over the Eight)

Not to be confused with After Eights the candy, the Loggers decided after getting all new uniforms after last season, a complete name change was necessary.  This team has all the makings of a Cinederalla team as they proved in 2014 by beating the Three Kings in the quarterfinals.  Will this new name inspire the team to be a thin, wafery chocolatey goodness with minty filling?  With the upcoming nuptials for Craig and Kristen, 2016’s cutest couple, DLo and Adam have some bridal comp to contend with.

14. SoftSpot Runaways (formerly Runaways)

They made some big improvements and also increased the number of times you will see a player from their team playing without a shirt on.  Not to be too confused with other SoftSpots from other leagues and other WSL  teams that have had hostile takeovers (see: United Players for Winnie) Chad is still on this team and although they lost Meg, they gained a Czr and some pretty consistent pitching from an already talented and underachieving staff.  Expect Dom to show up tanned and gorgeous by week 3 and Sam to play every position by Week 5 and win the Umpire of the Year award.

15. Turkey’s Nest Teachers

Rumor has it that Teachers have  several new players and could look very different in 2016. Let’s see it first before we start moving them up in the ranks.

16. Gibson

One of the best bars on Bedford.
