Week 11 – PREVIEW

Fri, Jun 19, 2015

To all our “Fathers of the Year” out there, this Sunday’s for YOU!

Field # 1: Turkey’s Nest @ Impose  ()

Issued to every member of the Impose Squad.

I sure am glad 3Ks played Impose BEFORE they decided to start hitting. They were averaging a pedestrian 10 runs per game through Week 4, which left them with a 2-2 record and some work to do. Not sure what Coach Pete said or did to spark the offense since then, but it most definitely worked. The team now has won 4 in a row and are averaging 7 more runs per game over their current winning streak! For a squad that has traditionally won with defense, the new found bats are going to be a problem for upcoming WSL opponents.

The “Jekyll and Hyde” Turkey’s Nest bunch have been a total mystery to me all season. Attendance and injuries seem to have affected the week to week performance. Streaky and unpredictable are not what one would expect from the defending WSL champs. The Nest has barely snuck by a couple of struggling teams in recent weeks. Now they face one of their biggest challenges of the season, as they try to hold on to the top spot in the Fashion South division.

Field # 2: AT United @ Black Betty (Homer Wadsworth)

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away….or 2009, Gerald was a Betty. He proudly donned the black and gold year after year, had his hand in a few championships wins, and naturally took on the name GBlack because Gerald sounds so formal. When he left the team he told reporters he was going to get ATU back on the map and back on top. A few years later, he’s still trying to find the right formula by making some key acquisitions and generally tried to make something out of nothing. His secret mission: to beat the Betty’s every chance he gets.

The last 2 seasons have been good to G. During the World Cup last summer, he donned Argentinian blue and white and beat the Bettys almost purely on will, determination and a lethal stare from the mound. The black&gold couldn’t mount a comeback and he got a big win against his former team.

Last weekend ATU couldn’t field a team and made all the 86ers angry for ruining softball Sundays for them. It’s kind of odd they couldn’t field a team since sometimes they have about 20 people on the bench, but summer is upon us and we all got shit to do that doesn’t involve softball (only some of us). I caught up with PeteMo at the bar after the no-game he played on Sunday and needless to say….he was bummed.

That should all change this Sunday at 11am when the Betty face off against the AT United and the rivalry that goes back to ‘The Decision’ gets played out one more time. Will G start on the mound or let Jimmy2s get the nod with Gerald coming out of the bullpen? Will JB$ be there holding a standing tree pose of his own? Will PrincipalPretto get his Father’s Day wish and play SS? Is H still out in Japan counting his yen, tucking his shirt in because someone told him that’s the style in Japan?

Field # 1: Berry Park @ Gibson (Shortz)

This match up formerly known as the “Battle of Bedford Avenue” before the Yetis became all posh on Berry Street. So now we’ll call it the “Battle of the Better Outdoors Spaces”? Now before you say Berry Park is the clear winner by having it’s own bar on the roof deck that has triple the space, the Gibson has it’s own grill master, Owen, and the occasional feral kitten parade (awwwwwwww). Plus we can wear hats and jerseys there!

There’ll be some defector/defectee action happening this Sunday, which I liken to flipping the bird at someone in your car, only to get stuck right next to them at a red light. But I rather to focus on something awesome- Win Daddy as Coach!!!! Yes, he’s been in the driver’s seat for a week now, but this is my first Yeti game since he took the reigns. Where do I start? First, he’s my BFFFFFFFFFFFFF (as a Yeti- calm down PeteMo), and he spins some means dance tunes. This is the best thing that’s happened in the WSL bubble since Erik started slummin’ it with us softballers. I’d love to be a fly on the wall for his pre-game pep talks.

As for the Gibbers, I don’t know what to say? Winston is the Yetis’ coach now, and he’s delightful. Plus he has ‘Win’ in his name. Prove me wrong, Gibson. Also, don’t try to go to their bar after the game with your hats and jersey’s on, you don’t want to be bounced from a post-match establishment two weeks in a row.

Field # 2: Turkey’s Teachers @ Clemerica  ()

If you’ve been following along this season, you know how I like to spot the WSL trends. Take the Battleship, for instance. They had a 5 game winning streak that ended last week, while scoring a season-low 3 runs in the loss. Should we consider that an anomaly or a possible sign of regression? They did begin the season with 3 losses, where they scored 6 runs or less in each, before running off those 5 straight wins.

TNT, who are also coming off a loss in Week 10, are definitely trending upward. 2 weeks ago they earned their 1st victory of the 2015 season and followed it up with their largest offensive output of the year, scoring 16 runs against a very good R Bar defense. Yes, they lost that game; however, they were not entirely outmatched like many of their early season match-ups.

The records would show that Clem’s is a big favorite in this one, but I am not ready to count out the Teacher’s. Haz has his squad playing some inspired ball. Can Breeze rally his troops to match the intensity? Check it out on Sunday…bring snacks!

Field # 1: The Runaways @ Crown Vic 86ers (Homer Wadsworth)

CrownVic, after having their Week 10 games obliterated by ATU’s inability to field a team, is back in action this weekend and face The Runaways, a team that is still seeking its second win of the season. The amount of teams left looking numero duo are dwindling and unless Sam’s plan all along is to make his team tank to get good playoffs positioning, well he is a smarter man than me.

Al Buttah and the Mechanics are in a tight little groove right now and are churning out wins like a machine…a well oiled and maintained classic car! After half a season, the Vics seem to be finding their foothold in the league and are beating the teams they think they should beat and playing close games with some of the goliaths of the league.

Dylan “McKay” has been the Vics secret new weapon, unleashing a shit ton of dingers around McCarren Park; my personal fav DO is back and has a sponsor for his JAMS and the outfield combo of Dre “TenHut”, and Ben “I will find you a real job someday” Weismann will be accompanied by the retired Jeff ‘Filthy’ Gut-it-out-ski fresh out of the old folks home.

Expect The Runaways to find a little rhythm early and put a fright into the Vic. The Vic will respond and remember they are cocky little bastards with nothing to lose and wrap it up by the 6th. I also expect the umpire to be top notch.

Field # 2: Loggers @ Roebling Sports Club (Shortz)

Don’t cry Ope– I’ll be back next week.

I can’t believe I’m missing this one! You Loggers are collectively the best humans in the league; the veterans, Tony, Al, and even you, Brenner. And the new blood, Craig and Kristen; I love you guys. We’re going to try to kill you on Sunday, but I love you guys.

Both teams have had some hard times thus far are, and are at the bottom (or nearly tied for bottom) in our respective southern divisions. And both teams have had some close losses…and some not so close losses. The Loggers are still searching for that second win, while us Remys are trying to inch closer to that coveted .500 mark.

We’re also reeling from the loss of Coach Hogan, who’s out of town to do some “ACTING! THANK YOU!”, so veteran Remy Jake will be in the driver’s seat till August. Expect a similar style of coaching, minus the baseball pants…and whaling pants…and bizarre pre-game stretching routine.

This should be a spicy match up- spicier than the incendiary Wings that made Ope weep last week.

Field # 1: The Bedford @ R Bar (Homer Wadsworth)

An explosion of a game!

Do I hear GAME OF THE WEEK? Last time I did this I got scolded by Thee Who’s Name Cannot Be Said, but the only close competition to this week would be 3 Kings vs Enid’s, and they’re both at 5 o’clock. What a weekend of bruiser matchups! It’s like a final four, mid-season and it’s all happening at the same time! All teams are kinda rolling with exception of Enid’s who took a close loss to the Bedford 2 weeks ago. The Bedford have been feelin’ themselves after the win against the Pinks and rolled over the Gibson without hitting the panic button last week. R Bar beat up the Teachers last week and the Kings were content to only beat Clem’s by 6 runs.

The Bedford and their new leadership are feeling pretty confident about themselves and who wouldn’t when Big Daddy Kane (Happy Father’s Day!) is throwing scoreless inning and hitting the shit out the ball in the 9 spot; Matty ‘No-MRI’ is healthy and playing multiple positions at once; and MO’M and Metzl are locked in a battle for their short range game. Expect them to come out loose and lively and with some pop in their bats. Even without their big guns the Bedford have the post season acumen to make these mid-season match ups tough on the opponent.

RBar is another juggernaut and are looking for their first big win against a top tiered team. They got lazily beaten by the Kings a few weeks ago and want another chance to match up and show the WSL they mean business. Petey (best leadoff guy ever!) is automatic (6 for 6 last week? sick!) and needs to be stopped from getting on base if The Bedford wanna stay in this matchup because the power and the pop that follows is thunderous with Bobby the original ‘Yo, Where’s My Keys?’ guy, John ‘Silent But Deadly’ and the ever impressive Bubbs Connor (has cool WW2 sound to it) who, if needed, would pitch, and hit and run the bases on his hands if it means he can play. Dude’s a gamer.

Expect 5pm at McCarren to be a coupla games with a lot of firepower and lock down defense on all four sides. These games are all about bragging rights. Any team that puts together the W will remember how they did it and the losing teams will use this as fuel for their postseason fires.

Field # 2: 3 Kings @ Enids ()

Dom and Nick playing dress up!

The Pinks and Kings have been trading wins and losses for years now. Win one, lose one, rinse, repeat. Last year it was Enid’s with the lone victory, 2013 was a split, 2012 belonged to the Pinks and then there was another regular season split before the Kings bounced Enid’s from the 2011 playoffs. As you can see, these two squads have a nice little rivalry going in recent years.

Obviously, it’s 2015 now and the past is…well…the past. The new-look Three Kings team is now winning with stifling defense and timely hits, which is exactly the strategy that the Pinks have used to amass a 6-2 record this year. First year managers, Nick and Dom, face off for the first time on Sunday. With a huge cast of characters behind each of them, look for lots of silly banter and missing shirts.

The Kings will look to maintain their lead in the Godsy North, while Enid’s will try to stay in the hunt in their own Fashion North division. Expect a 9 (or more) inning battle, featuring some big bats and slick gloves. The action kicks off at 5pm on Field 2…don’t miss it!
