Helloooooo WSL Players, Fans and Friends!
As you all know, we’re very anxious to get out there and start playing the 2013 Season. A lot of us have been working behind the scenes to get the fields ready (thanks Mike V!), get the permits (thanks Rebecca) and of course tightening up the WSL Rules (thanks, Camarra!).
One of the issues we’ve been struggling with is the pitching. We all know how contentious it’s become over the past few years with the arc, or too flat, or too much speed, etc…this has been a problem we’ve all been dealing with and trying to solve.
I was speaking to a lot of players over the past few days and I think there needs to be a major change. But what’s important is keeping the integrity of the league, which is after all a “hitters league.”
I’m concerned that the pitching is going to get too fast, too flat, too funky and therefor the league will eventually just fall apart as we begin to bring in ringer pitchers or keep throwing more and more flat and too fast.
So, after some consideration we’ve decided to no longer call balls and strikes. This will allow the pitcher to throw as much junk, fast, flat, etc…as they want, as there will be no balls and strikes. So no walks, and no strikeouts. In addition to this, I feel we need to give the batter an advantage, so the hitter will now have unlimited swings, so no foul outs.
I feel by allowing the pitcher to throw as many pitches, fast, flat, slow, arc, etc…and allowing the batter to take as many cuts as possible until he/she hits one fair, will finally bring the parity to the league and really establish ourselves as a top of the line league.
Please join me in understanding this new rule which will take effect as of Opening Day.
I know there will be some complaints, but it’s for the best of the league to implement this rule.
Thanks all!! Looking forward to an exciting 2013!!
