Week 17 – Recap

Tue, Jul 19, 2011

Farewell my child... until we meet again...

Week#17 marks the end of an Era.

We’ve had an incredible run the last decade or so in McCarren Park, but this week we faced a huge loss. We all got through the day, we all still laughed, and loved, and stumbled home with minor injuries. But something was missing…something just wasn’t right…

RIP to the Turkey’s Nest “To-Go” Big Bud. You are in our hearts always.

11AM
The Gibson is fired. The field work, bad. The hitting, worse. Loggers rack-up their 3rd season win. The league voted for us all to play Big Bud Bowling, but we couldn’t take-out the goddamn Styrofoam cups so we opted for our regularly scheduled game. Nothing more to note. However, over on field one the Yeti’s look like they are gettin’ back to play-off form with a big win over the Candystore and the Recap of the Week spot for team Captain Zak, “Soft Spot scored early and often in route to a 19-6 win over Pete’s. Every player had a hit in a solid team effort. Several children ran toward a mysterious “older guy” in Soft Spot’s outfield later in the game, apparently mistaking him for some sort of storybook princess. The situation was resolved when several Pete’s players lured the kids away with promises of candy.”

1PM
Clem’s lost; AT didn’t. I can’t get a recap to save my life but it looked close most of the time. The new 2011 All Stars move above .500 and are clawing at a playoff spot. Clem’s post season hopes are pretty much sunk. On field two the Kings were pumped and ready to go but 2nd Chance did not make it easy. The 86ers came right out the gate putting up some runs early on.

Gutowski going yard...

Their defense was strong with Speedy Jeff Gutowski everywhere in the outfield and Al-Bizzy and Andre holding down the left side of the infield. Then in the fourth, 3K broke loose bringing in a couple runs and then taking the lead with a smash by Billy Gruarin that easily broke the McCarren park record and brought in 3 runs. But the 86ers, undaunted, came back to pull it to 9-7 Kings in the 8th when, with bases loaded, Tommy Lips smacked the perfect clincher into the center field gap producing a Grand Slam that won 3K the game!! The Kings send their love to 2nd Chance!

3PM
But there was no love lost between Reel 2 Reel & Good Co in the 3PM match-up. The butterfly never lies and Reel 2 Reel continues their winning ways while Godsy @ ump continued to stress-out over the Gibson produced right field foul line. Shortz found $5 but still couldn’t buy a beer since you can’t enter The Nest now with cleats on. Reel 2 Reel now sits in the top spot in the North for the first time this year!

Jody grips it and rips it!

Meanwhile the Black Betty/Turkey’s Teachers game got out of hand early with the Betties taking a 11-0 lead after 2 innings, but the Teachers came back strong and never gave up, getting to within five at one point. At the end of the day, however, Black Betty prevailed once again in a 21-11 blow-out and now has a two game lead over Rbar in the South who they’ll face this coming Sunday.

5PM
Rbar, looking to rebound after a bad loss to Soft Spot, gave up some early runs to Mendoza, but the Bums came back, lead by hurler Amy Tucker, who went four for four with 2 RBIs. Mendoza cut the game to 11 to 8 in the sixth but the Bums defense stepped-up turning two double plays, including one to end the game. RBar records their sixth win in their last seven. In the Game of the Week over on Field 2, The Nest didn’t disappoint! They handed Spike Hill their third loss of the season and pretty much knocked them down to Third place in the North! Though they are both technically tied for first with Reel 2 Reel, this is the first time that Spike Hill has been ousted from the top of the Northside standings. Congrats to The Nest on one hell of a week and 2B Turkey Trish on one hell of a defensive day!

That’s all folks! OHHH, except for one more thing. If you found a dark-brown Mizuno glove with trapeze webbing tucked inside an old Met’s cap, I know a certain meatball that is desperate to get them back! Please, let me know if you picked them up.

Otherwise, talk to you on Thursday!

– Carly

PS. I would like to apologize for interfering in the Spike Hill/Turkey’s Nest game by getting tipsy and not paying attention to the over throw that was blocked from hitting my head and sent back into play.
