WSL Bat Rule Message from the Commish

Thu, Feb 10, 2022

Hello Players of the WSL!

First off, I want to begin by saying I hope all of you are doing well and staying safe and warm over this winter. We’ll be out there soon enough!

As all of you know by now, the WSL is switching to aluminum/metal alloy bats for this 2022 Season, and I wanted to explain how this came about, what the rule is, and what are the next steps.

For the past year or so there have been rumblings in the league about the balls coming off the bat much quicker than previously, and overall bats being “hotter.” There were concerns from players about safety, not only for themselves and fellow players but for spectators and park goers as well.

The Rules Committee convened in the beginning of this year to discuss what we could do to investigate how to remedy this situation. From there they created a Bat Subcommittee to look further into this and come up with some possible solutions.

Before the Bat Subcommittee could adjudicate a decision, we decided to put together a vote for all the managers to see if they’d like to switch to aluminum/metal alloy bats.

The email was sent out to managers to vote on it and it was approved by the managers of the WSL with a vote of 10-6 in favor of the new rule. I will note that I have been contacted by many players who say they were never informed by their managers of this vote. Let me simply state that that is out of my hands. I cannot speak as to why managers did not inform their players. It is incumbent upon Managers to inform players of league issues, schedules, etc… and unfortunately there’s not much I can do about it if they’re not doing so.

After the rule passed the Bat Subcommittee then reconvened and decided that we would do without league bats for now and instead switch to aluminum/alloy bats so that everyone can have their own bat that they’re comfortable with. We have worked long and hard to come up with what constitutes a legal bat, what an illegal bat is, as well as a list of approved bats which you can find on the site here:

I myself have already purchased one, so please do so as the season begins shortly and you’ll want to pick one up.

The Bat Subcommittee, along with the Rules Committee, will be meeting on Feb 22nd to finalize other aspects of this rule, as well as possible additional rules to ensure fairness across the board. We’ll also be reviewing the rules in more detail at the Managers meeting on March 4th, and may reach out sooner via email to the Managers if we need to let them know something earlier. But this is now the rule of the WSL. The permits begin on March 20th, so you have a little over a month to find yourself a bat and get yourself familiarized with it.

Finally, I do want to say that everyone has the right to express their opinions. We understand this is a heated and sensitive topic so we are open to hearing from you. The Bat Subcommittee is trying their best to be as fair as possible and we want to be transparent with everyone. We value everyone’s suggestions to help improve the league, so If you have any issue with the new rule, questions, etc…you can now reach out to the Bat Subcommittee via email at:

Lastly, people can openly talk and express their opinions in a polite and professional manner on the WSL Facebook Page. However, if people are going to be antagonistic, create tension, arguments, and fights on Facebook, I’ll be enforcing the Facebook rules which can be found here: we are all grown adults and should act as such.

Thanks, and feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or issues.
