2019 WSL Preview Message from the Commish!

Fri, Jan 18, 2019

Helloooooo Peeps from the WSL!!

Just wanted to give a quick (these are never quick and I’m always incredibly longwinded) write-up for the 2019 preview! Settle in!

First things first, we have the permits for 2019, so that’s good! In terms of shutting down the fields in 2020, it looks like that is NOT going to happen. They have exhausted their funds and last we heard they are going to use what’s left for field 3 (the baseball field) like fixing the lights, maybe some drainage enhancements and possibly the red brick house…but who knows?! As of right this second, they will not be touching the softball fields. Yay!

Many of you have asked who is going to be the new 16th team, and it looks like we have a decision…drumroll, please!! The new team will be Pete’s Candy Store! I’m happy to welcome Pete’s into the WSL. They have participated with the Fall League as well as Saturday League, and I thought it would be great to have them back since they were one of the original bars. Andy McDowell will own the team and it will be managed by Jason Dietz and Zak Havaland. Congratulations!

As you all know, Leo has retired as Ump Manager and so we went out and looked for who can we get to replace him and it is going to be Jason Dietz AND Pete (Petemo) Fisher. They will be co-managing the Umpires. There is going to be a lot of interesting updates for you Umps so please attend the mandatory Umpire Meeting. Congrats to both you guys!

As some of you may or may not know, Graham is moving to Hong Kong for a great job he landed. Congrats, dude!! But, with that being said, Graham managed the Hall of Fame and so, we’ll need someone to take over where he left off. If you are interested, please reach out to me!!

Now to the fun stuff! Here are the important dates you need to know:

22 March @ 7pm – Managers Meeting
I am still working on what the team fee will be but will inform the managers shortly. The meeting will be held in the backroom of Pete’s Candy Store. This should be a good time.
3 March – Spring Training
Reminder we do NOT have the permits these first few weeks of March, so we have to come down en masse to claim them. This is open to anyone and is a good place to try out for the league, etc…
24 March – Hall of Fame Tournament
This is what funds the awesome Hall of Fame we have. It’s an all-day tournament. $150 a team to get in. Please note the team has to be an actual team in the WSL. It’s 6 team tournament. All proceeds go to the HOF.

30 March – Opening Day Pre-Season Party
The Opening Day Pre-Season Party will be hosted by the 2018 Champs Clems! We’ll see if they’ve made any fun additions or enhancements to the Joe “Fashion” Fiorentino Trophy and we’ll get to see them hoist it since it was not in our possession when they won the championship.
31 March – Opening Day!!
We are beginning early this year…not really sure why, it’s what the Parks Department gave us. We do however have April 22 off for Easter, so maybe that’s why they started us earlier? Who knows?! It’s gonna be chilly but at least we’ll be out there!

Well, this is where we are for now. Hope you all had a great holiday season and are having a wonderful New Year. Stay safe and warm out there. Only 7 Sundays left until Spring Training!

Thanks, all!
