2017 Power Rankings – Mid Season Report

Tue, Jun 13, 2017

Power Rankings: Memorial Day Report

We are at the mid season mark and it should be no surprise who is sitting at the top of our power rankings. Don’t get fooled by any click bait that says shit like “You will be shocked to see who is in first”. We only have one undefeated team and they started the season at the top of our rankings so they are the clear #1. All other teams have lost at least twice already.

Some of you might also be asking where these Power Rankings have been…. Well – due to the excessive cost of running our complex formulas last year, we have moved Power Rankings from a weekly report to a 3-time-a-year report. Power Rankings will be published at the Mid Season mark (9 games), after 14 games and right before playoffs. This will allow us to get a better sampling of performance than one week at a time. We have also moved away from Science and Math to determine our power rankings and strictly use ORB POWER (with some adjustments from the smoking staff at the WSL). Since Joe T is managing the top ranked undefeated team, we let him operate the ORB this time. If another manager gets his team to the top, then he or she will get ORB privileges. For now, it’s Joe’s ORB and we’re just living in it.

1. Three Kings (Pre-season Rank #1, Current Record: 9-0)

Three Kings is on fucking fire….. No other way to put it. They lead the league in Runs Scored (averaging 20 runs a game) and they are basically tied for the lead in fewest Runs Allowed (less than 7 per game!). Besides their one run victory in game one, they have won all games by at least 6 runs and won five games by at least 12 runs. They are 9-0 and haven’t lost to a team since last August…. When you look at the other teams in the Godsy Division, you can comfortably book Three Kings into the Finals this year with little opposition along the way. The next Godsy division team in these rankings isn’t until the 6 spot. I think it’s safe to say the addition of Evan has paid off nicely for Three Kings.

2. Black Betty (Pre-season Rank – #3, Current Record: 7-2)

The Betty started the year 0-2 and suffered one of the most embarrassing loses in WSL history with a shut out in game 2. Last season Betty had a TOTAL of 2 loses and they started this year 0-2. There was also the realization that important players from last season were not going to be back at the same level in 2017 and Betty didn’t do any recruiting in the off-season. People starting writing the obituary on Black Betty’s season and questioning whether their run as an elite team was over. 7 weeks later, Betty is alive and well – sitting on top of the rankings second only to the defending champs. Black Betty has rolled off 7 straight wins with impressive victories over two of the top 4 ranked teams. They have also added two big bats in the Franzese brothers who have not disappointed in their first few games with the team. Betty Ball is back and order has been restored for this team.

3. Gutter 86ers (Pre-season Rank – #2, Current Record: 7-2)

Three weeks ago, the 86ers were undefeated and looking like the team that made it to the final four in the last two seasons. With their signature lockdown defense and timely offense, they were proving once again that they are a top 5 team. However, the last three weeks they have gone 1&2 without scoring in double digits. That would normally knock a team out of the top three but they lost to the two teams ranked above them and beat the 3 teams ranked below them so it’s understandable why they are in the 3 spot. As previously mentioned, their defense is solid. They have only allowed teams to score 10+ runs on them three times and held 4 teams to 7 runs or less. They have 3 very winnable games coming up so it wouldn’t surprise us to see the 86ers sitting at 10-2 and on their way to the most wins in 86er history.

4. Spike Hill (Pre-season Rank – #4, Current Record: 7-2)

Spike Hill will always be a top ranked team. They have one of the deepest rosters in the league and always seem to have more talent ready to join the front lines. Spike has back-ups at each position that could easily be starters on other teams. That’s why it was surprising to see Spike start the season 2-2 when they had a total of 3 loses last season. However, those loses were against top ranked teams so no one seemed to sound the alarm on their season. Similar to Betty they have shaken off their slow start and run off 5 straight wins included 3 wins against teams ranked in the top 7.  They are now living up to their potential and can make a big statement in their next game when they face off against top seed Three Kings.

5. Runaways (Pre-season Rank – #12, Current Record: 6-3)

Without a doubt, the Runaways have been the most surprising team in 2017. They lost a few players in the offseason and gained a few players but no one expected such a strong 1st half from a team we had ranked 12th coming into the season. They are one win away from matching last year’s win total and have won 4 straight games with solid wins over Clems and St. Anselm in the last 2 weeks. The most impressive part to the Runaways season is not their record but their defense. They are tied with Three Kings in fewest runs allowed and have held teams to five runs or less 4 times this season. It’s not clear if the Runaways can maintain their impressive start in the second half of the season but based on their schedule it’s highly likely that the Runaways are a 10+ win team this year and that’s a big step forward compared to the past few years. Last year, the Runaways never got above a single digit ranking.

6. Turkey’s Nest (Pre-season Rank – #7, Record 6-3)

Right now, the only team that appears to have any chance to hold off a Three Kings Finals appearance is Turkey’s Nest. They lost by one run in extra innings to Three Kings and were the only team to give Three Kings a good game. That being said, the Nest appears to play to their competition because after going 12 rounds with the champ in game one, they keep finding themselves in close games with teams that they should be easily beating. They haven’t won a game by more than 6 runs all season and have allowed more runs than they have scored on the season but they are finding a way to get it done and have the second best record in the Godsy Division

7. Kilo Bravo (Pre-season Rank – #5, Record 5-4)

We called Kilo Bravo the most balanced team in the league at the beginning of the season but what we didn’t realize was how unbalanced their luck would be. They have lost 4 games this season….. Three games by 1 run and last week by 2 or 3. Holy shit…. It’s amazing no one has lost their mind already. That being said, we are predicting that Kilo runs off 5 straight wins and has a 10-4 record when we do these standings again. There is no way a team this talented will continue to stumble through the season. Their luck will change and they will likely end up in a top 5 ranking.

8. R Bar (Pre-season Rank- #6, Record 5-4)

The R Bar has done a good job of navigating a tricky start to the season. They are on top of the Godsy North Division and have been competitive in all games this season. For the most part, they are beating the teams they should beat and playing close games with higher ranked teams. If they can get a consistent line-up each week with their top players, they will be better than most people predicted at the start of the season. However, they are about to embark on a really tough 5 game stretch that will make or break their season. 4 of their next 5 games are against teams ranked above them.

9. Clems (Pre-season Rank – #9, Record 4-5)

The Clems were ranked 2nd in the league as recently as week 13 of last year when they reach their highest win total ever for a Clems team. Then they remembered that they don’t give a shit about winning and went on an extremely successful mission of proving to the league just how much they don’t give a shit by finishing 2016 with a bunch of loses and then ending the 1st half of 2017 by losing 4 of their last 5 (including a 20 run loss last week) & a 4-5 record. They haven’t beaten a team with a winning record this season but that might change this Sunday when Clems takes on Black Betty. The last two seasons, Clems has beaten Black Betty in their one match up of the season so history is on their side (if they give a shit).

10. St. Anselm (Pre-season Rank – #8, Record 4-5)

It’s been a disappointing 1st half for St. Anselm coming off an 11 win season in 2016. They haven’t won in back-to-back weeks all season and three of their 5 losses were by 9 runs or more. However, St. Anselm got off to a slow start in 2016 as well and ended up finishing strong. They moved up to the 5th ranking by the end of the season after being in 10th in week 7. There is still a chance we get a run out of St. Anselm and they might have started it already with a strong win over Kilo Bravo to end the first half.

11. Loggers (Pre-season Rank – #13 Record 3-6)

The Loggers have the dubious distinction of having scored the fewest runs in the league. However, they have managed to win 3 games and rank above 5 different teams. They have a 3 game stretch coming up against teams who are all below 500 so it’s not crazy to imagine a 6-6 Loggers team in July if they can score double digit runs in each game.

12. RSC (Pre-season Rank – #10, Record 3-6)

This is confusing. RSC is better than a 3-6 team. They have a lot of talent and play everyone hard. They got back in the win column this past weekend with a victory over Gibson but prior to that they lost 4 in a row by a combined 12 runs. Three of those games were decided by 3 runs or less. RSC also had one of the toughest schedules in the first half of the season playing Spike, 86ers, Betty, Runaways and 3 Kings (the top 5 ranked teams). The second half schedule is much easier for RSC and we predict at least a 500 finish if not better.

13. Yetis (Pre-season Rank – #11, Record 3-6)

Tough loss last week to Spike Hill that could have been a turning point in the season if they squeezed out a win. Their next three games are against teams ranked 11th or worse so a run is still possible but having a 4-5 record at the break with 3 lower ranked teams in front of them would have been a big morale boost.

14. AT All-Stars (Pre-season Rank – #11, Record 2-7)

After starting the season 2-2, AT has lost 5 in a row with a rough schedule ahead. In other rankings, AT is leading the entire league in number of tents with a commanding 1-o lead.

15. Turkey’s Teachers (Pre-season Rank – #15, Record 1-8)

After a crushing win against Gibson, the Teachers almost pulled off the upset of the season against Turkey’s Nest but ended up losing by one.

16. Gibson (Pre-season Rank – #16 Record 0-9)
