The WSL is back…. Week one is in the books and while we would have loved to provide this recap to you a few days earlier we just couldn’t get our shit together. And by “we”, I mean me… And truth be told, I need some help to get this done in a timely manner so if you are interested in volunteering to do my day job for me once a week so I can focus on the WSL website that would be awesome. Another option would be contributing to the website with your own weekly recaps. My preference is you doing my day job for free once a week for the entire summer (I have a nice office) but the website writer option can also work if that’s more your style.
The ideal scenario would be one writer from each team. We have already put together a pretty nice cast of writers for 2017 and they will start in week 2. We have Clinchy for RSC, McNelis for St. A, Graham for Runaways, Belz for Betty, Dubin for Spike, Nat for Clems and I’m covering everything else. If you are on a team and want to be the team recapper, talk with your manager and they will email me. I guess I could just provide my email address but some of you are pretty creepy dudes so I would rather just do the facebook thing for now. Ha… yes… I’m just kidding. I don’t care if creepy dudes email me (Dubin sends me pics on a daily basis) but I want the managers to give the greenlight on who gets to be the official team recap writer. I’m going to ask them to talk with their teams as well. Thanks in advance…. now to the recaps…
Field #1: Clems @ AT
Clems jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The first 6 batters for Clems got on base. DBA highlighted the inning with a Home Run and Bobby lowlighted the inning with a weak fucking walk (SAD!). AT got their first run of the game on a Super Dave single that scored Matt. In the top of the 3rd, Bobby redeemed himself with a Home Run. His home run was answered in the bottom half of the 3rd with a Home Run from WSL’s favorite college professor, the knish himself, Jonathan Metzl. At the end of 3, the score was 6-2
In the bottom of the 4th, AT tacked on another 2 runs to close the Clems lead to 6-4. Matt’s triple scored Ersin and Justin’s single scored Matt. Both teams threw up zeros in the 5th. Bobby lead off the 6th with a triple and scored on DBA’s single. Back-to-back doubles from Meyer and Rob coupled with a single from Jim gave Clems a 10-4 lead. They looked like they were in the driver’s seat but AT stormed back in the bottom half of the inning with 4 runs of their own. With 2 outs, AT All stars ran off 5 straight hits with G Black, Supe and Billy collecting the RBIs. The score was 10-8 going into the 7th.
Clems tacked on 2 in the 7th off a Danny triple and one more in the 8th of a Stryker Sac Fly scoring DBA. AT squeaked in a run in the bottom of the 9th but it wasn’t enough to make Clems worry on their way to an opening day win. It’s worth noting that Clem’s staple Mike Markowski was not in the line-up for Clems. He is on the DL with a broken hand and not expected to be on the field until May. Hopefully Clems can find a way to keep winning until their All Star returns.

Field #2: R Bar @ St. Anselm
Ok – so let’s quickly address the elephant in the room. R Bar lost a key player this off season and it came as a shock to many of us in the WSL. And worst of all, that player went to Three Kings…. Damn… Some people are calling this a Kevin Durant move but we don’t see it like that. This player helped deliver a championship to R Bar before he left so that’s a big difference vs Durant leaving the Thunder to get a championship. Still – something doesn’t feel right about this. For those that don’t know who I’m talking about, his name is Evan Maiorino and he has now taken his OF / Lead-off talents to Queens. It’s messed up and we don’t approve of the move. The Champs don’t need more fire power… Come on Evan…
Anyway, R Bar was quick to show the league that even with the departure of Evan (and whoever else they lost) they are still a force to be reckoned with. They hung 4 runs on the board in the top of the first thanks to hits from DJ, John, Billy & Richie and a few errors from St. Anselm. In the bottom of the 1st, St. Anslem answered back with two runs but didn’t score another run until the 6th. In that time, R Bar scored 4 more in the 3rd and one in the 5th. St. A got one across in the 6th and 7th, 2 in the 8th and 1 more in the 9th but couldn’t find a way to extend a rally in any inning. The game was never close and R Bar easily took home the win an opening day. John R was in the middle of all rallies for R Bar and ended up getting on base all 5 times and scoring all 5 times with RBIs in 3 of those at bats.

Field #1: Yetis @ Gibson
The Yetis vs Gibson game followed suit with many of the games from opening day and included a huge outburst of scoring in the first two innings. Yetis lead off the game with two runs in the top of the 1st and Gibson answered with two of their own in the bottom of the 1st. Then came the tidal wave of Yeti scoring…. The first 6 batters for the Yetis in the top of the 6th got a hit and after the line-up was turned over the next 4 of 5 batters got a hit. When the dust settled, the Yetis scored 9 runs and lead 11-2. All the Yetis runs came via singles or doubles.
The Gibson didn’t give up and oddly enough scored in every inning of this game except the 4th. The big challenge for Gibson was stringing together a rally that lasted more than a few runs. While they scored runs in 8 of the 9 innings, they didn’t score more than 3 runs in any of the innings. The Yetis also scored in almost every inning but found a way to have a 3 innings where they scored 4 runs or more. Of the 205 runs scored in opening day weekend, 43 came from this game. If you are a fan of scoring, you likely enjoyed this game.

Field #2: T Nest @ Three Kings
(Nest 14 / Three Kings 15 )
Field #1: Black Betty @ Kilo Bravo
A Betty / Enids game is never a dull affair. This was the “other” extra inning game on opening day weekend and started with Betty taking a 2 run lead in the top of the first followed by a top of the 2nd HR by Holland to make it 3-0. Kilo got one across in the bottom of the 2nd which was answered with one by Betty in the top of the 3rd. At the end of 3, it was 4-1 Betty.
After a scoreless top of the 4th, Kilo brought the top of their line-up to bat and got hits from Allan and Peralta. Comfy tied the game with a 3 run HR and Danny Rash made it 6-4 with a Home Run of his own that scored Cesar. It was 6-4 at the end of 4. After Betty put up a zero for the third straight inning in the top of the 6th, Kilo scored three more runs sparked once again from the top of the line-up. Peralta, Tommy, Comfy and Danny all got hits in the inning which ended with a 9-4 lead for Kilo going into the 7th.
It looked like Kilo was in the drivers seat in the top of the 7th when the first two batters got out but Betty rallied for 5 runs in the inning all with two outs. Julio, Pretto, Holland, Jody, JB, Aidan and Belz all got hits and tied up the game 9-9 going into the 8th. After hold Kilo to no runs in the bottom of the 7th, Betty jumped out to the lead when Kyle scored after getting a double with one out. Again Betty held Kilo scoreless in the bottom of the 8th and again put up another run when Holland scored after leading off the inning with a hit. Going into the bottom of the 9th, Betty was wining 11-9
Kilo started the bottom of the 9th with a hit from Cesar and Danny. They were able to tie up the game 11-11 in the bottom of the 9th to send the game into extra innings. Mike C put Betty ahead again in the top of the 10th with a HR but Kilo once again rallied in the bottom half of the inning to plate 2 runs on a Cesar hit to win the game…. This should be an interesting battle for the division.
(Betty 12 / Kilo 13)
Field #2: Runaways @ Loggers
Not sure what happened here…. The Runaways dismantled the Loggers. The score was 12-0 by the end of the 3rd and it only got worse from there. The Runaways scored at least 2 runs in every inning but the 4th and have 4 innings where they put up at least 4. At the end of the Walking Dead type massacre, the final score was 27-1. We know the Loggers are a better team that this so we are going to write this up to early season rust. The real question is whether this is the first sign of a surprise powerhouse team in the Runaways. A lot will be answered when Runaways face Black Betty in week two.
(Runaways 27 / Loggers 1 )
Field #1: Spike Hill @ RSC
Most of the damage from Spike Hill came in the first inning. Spike exploded for 7 runs in the top of the inning and never looked back. 6 of the top 7 hitters got singles and if it wasn’t for a play at the plate off Mina’s 2B to end the first, it might have been even worse. We don’t have much else to say about this game because the pictures of the books only went until the 2nd inning so we know Spike when up 8-0 and never trailed in the game but other than that, we are clueless. I assume Dubin did something really funny and made the ladies lust after him. I also assume that O’Malley scolded his team for now wanting it enough and then broke out like 10 bottles of wine – one each from all Canadian provinces. How many of you knew there were 10 provinces in Canada? Hardly any of you… so at least you learned something from this write-up.
