Helloooooo Players, Fans, Managers and Groupies of the WSL!
Well, here we are, another opening day in the Williamsburg Softball League, and where do I start? First off, it’s a beautiful day for softball!!
This is now the beginning of my 5th year as Commissioner, and I have to say each year gets better and better.
We’ve got a lot of really great things going on, from the Rules Committee, the Umps Crew, the Grounds Crew, the Party Planning, to Chad’s abs, everything is clicking. What I want to express is that everyone participating in these groups are doing it out of the love for the league and love of the game. They are doing it to improve the league and make it better and better. I would love it if you as a player/manager/fan/groupie would stop one of these people; Richie, Justin Moench, Pete Hoffman, Leo, McNelis, Nat the Bat, Breezy, Chad, Zak, Gerald, Steph Gall, Kristen Pisnelli, Uncle Lou Giagrande, Graham, and just say “hey, thank you!” And buy them a beer or something, give them a hug, a kiss, but let them know that they’re appreciated and their hard work does not go unnoticed. I can only thank them so much before it starts to come off as cheesy or insincere, so as a league let’s show them some love!
Also, we need to have an Erik Pendzich day in the WSL!!! Let’s think of something!!
In addition to this, don’t forget to thank your sponsors who spend their hard earned money to let you play softball. Kate, Sean, Megan, Matt, and to all the sponsors, thank you!
And as I say every season, if you think the league can be better, if you have an idea, approach me! Join the fun, get in the game, Fokker! There’s always room for one more, so don’t hesitate to find me at the field, email, text, etc…and get involved.
From the rumors on the street, and the recent alignment, I think this is going to be a very competitive season. We have a solid amount of really good teams at the top, a bunch of middle teams who are steps away from taking that leap to the top, and only a few teams at the bottom, but I think all teams have really improved this off-season. I have, and I am sure many of you have, played in a lot of co-ed softball leagues in the city, and I know for a fact this is one of the most competitive in all five boroughs. Despite what some people think, I love the fact that every team makes the playoffs, because it gives every team a chance to be a Cinderella team and that’s what makes it so awesome.
Let me take my Commissioner’s hat off and put on my Black Betty hat. To the 3 Kings: Congrats on being champs! Now it’s your turn to have the bulls eye on your back all season long, where teams come down and play you like it’s their Super Bowl and Game 7. It ain’t easy! Good luck!
Now, I’ll take off my Black Betty hat and put my Commissioner’s hat back on. To the 3 Kings: Congrats on being champs! You guys really came together at the end of last season, and had a heck of a Hall of Fame Tournament. Thank you to Nick Tomeo and the 3 K for fixing up the Joe Fashion Fiorentino WSL Trophy!! And for making the AMAZING WSL Hall of Fame Trophy!! This thing blew me away. If you haven’t seen it, take a look. It’s beautiful and something that teams will be very proud of winning every year. Glad to have you guys and glad you’ve kicked up the league a (huge) notch.
To the rest of the teams in the WSL, and I say this every year, if you want that Fashion Trophy, if you want to be champs at the end of the season, well, you know who the champs are, now it’s time to dethrone them! Game of Thrones, bitches!!
But, back to the Hall of Fame, I still want to give two shout outs again to both Lou and Graham for organizing the tournament and the Hall of Fame. Putting this together, honoring those who started this league, who brought it to where it is now is what really makes this league freaking amazing. So many friendships, relationships, hook ups, one night stands, “what the fuck did I do last night”s, marriages, babies, have come from this league, that I am so happy we can honor these people. It’s going to be a great event later this year!!
So, I’ll finish this 2017 Opening Day post by quoting the Golden Rule of the WSL:
Remember, this league was, is, and forever will be, at its heart, laid-back and fun. Rules and regulations notwithstanding, let’s remember not to take things too seriously. Be fair. Be mindful. Be nice. Teams are, as always, advised to invite their opponent out for drinks after each game, and, as always, the point of this all is for everyone to have a good time.
And as Joe Fashion always said “This is Recess!”
