Power Rankings: Regular Season Final

This is it… The last Power Rankings of the season. I use to think the season was long when I was only playing in it. When you are working on the website for 5 months, the season feels even longer…. and this is just the power rankings. The write ups are a totally different animal that we couldn’t tame this year. We will jump back on the “write-up” train for the playoffs and give it a try again next year. For now, this is all we got…  And it’s still not as entertaining as Mikey Black’s Facebook posts but we hope you enjoy it anyway. (Side note: Holland said Mikey Black pees sitting down)

Many of our rankings won’t surprise you but keep in mind that this is not seeding. Theses are rankings so having a better record doesn’t mean you have a better ranking. We didn’t spend $5,000 creating a ranking algorithm just to go by records (Yes – 5K…. Where did you think your fees went to? Permits? HA! Please…. We don’t have fucking permits. Who the fuck would buy a permit to play on fields that have 18″ grass in the outfield? It’s like playing ball in the middle of the Cannoli murder scene in the Godfather…).

Anyway, our #1 rank is not the team with the best record and there is a good reason for it. Three teams in the league had record breaking seasons (Kilo, Betty and Spike) and all three teams were 1-1 against each other. Kilo had the best offense, Spike had the best defense and Betty had the best record. Ultimately we went with Spike as the top rank…. Why? It’s all below including our preseason ranks and final records so you can see how far off we were at the start of the season.

So….. for the last time we bring you a completely unnecessary Power Ranking: Regular Season Final

1. Spike Hill (Pre-season Rank #3, Final Record 15-3)

Spike has one less win than Black Betty so we understand if you are questioning the ranking. The reason we ranked Spike #1 was primarily due to defense. They only allowed 126 runs all season. That is sick. It’s a clean 7 runs per game in a 9 inning slow pitch beer league. To put things into perspective, 126 total runs in 215 runs LESS than our 16th ranked team and 31 less runs than our 2nd ranked team. Only 6 times (out of 18 games) did they let up more than 10 runs in a game. 8 times they held a team to 7 runs or less…. Just a really impressive defensive performance all season. Since Betty and Spike have identical Runs Scored (14.7 per game) and Spike won the regular season match up vs Betty, the official WSL ranking system agreed that Spike earned the #1 Rank in our Final Rankings. Congrats to Spike Hill…

2. Black Betty (Pre-season Rank – #2, Final Record 16-2)

The 2016 regular season produced the best Black Betty record ever….. For a team that has visited the Finals on a consistent basis, it’s pretty impressive for them to be breaking regular season win records. The Betty finished with the best record in the league using their 2nd ranked defense and 3rd ranked offense. Betty’s 8.7 runs allowed average might be higher than Spike but is still impressive considering the #3 ranked defense averaged 10.3 runs per game. In 13 of Betty’s 18 games, they let up 9 runs or fewer while scoring 10 runs or more in 15 of the 18 games. It’s rare for a team to have this type of season and not be ranked on top.

3. Kilo Bravo (Pre-season Rank – #5, Final Record 14-4)

For Kilo, it starts and ends with their #1 ranked offense. They score an average of 16.2 runs per game and finished with 15 more runs than the #2 ranked offense. Only three times did they score nine runs or fewer. They had a handful of walk-off hits (so you can never count them out) and a handful of 10+ run victories. They can hit. Plain and Simple…..  That being said, Kilo has allowed 9 or more runs 12 times this season so if their offense is off they might be vulnerable to an upset. If you are a Kilo fan, anything less than a Fashion Divisional Final game would be a disappointment.

4. R Bar (Pre-season Rank – #1, Final Record 12-6)

In typical “Championship Hangover” form, R Bar started the season slow with a 5-4 record. In addition to injuries, they also were dealing with the loss of a few key players and fitting in new players. They pulled themselves together and won 7 of their last 9 games while posting the 2nd ranked offense in the league with a 15.3 runs scored average. They are only a year removed from steamrolling through the playoffs for their first championship so it would not surprise anyone to see them in the finals once again.

5. St. Anselm (Pre-season Rank – #9, Record 11-7)

After starting off the season 2-3, St. Anselm caught fire and ran off 7 wins in 8 games. They were 9-4… and then they faced a few top teams that brought them back to earth. They finished the season losing 3 of their last 5 including two crushing defeats to Three Kings and Spike Hill. Beyond those defeats, they played a LOT of close games. 7 times this season they played a game decided by 2 runs or less. This team is not for the faint of heart…. and you can make an argument that they could easily be a 500 team or a top three team depending on how you look at it.

6. Three Kings (Pre-season Rank – #4, Record 10-8)

Three teams finished with a 10-8 record… but the team seeded the highest of the three did not get the higher ranking. Again – our complex ranking system at work. Three Kings grabs the highest ranking of the three 10-8 teams because they are the most dangerous of the three teams… We are not saying they are the best of the three but they have a potentially explosive offense (almost 13 runs a game if you don’t count their forfeit loss) and a deep line-up with several players that missed key games during the season. Of the three 10-8 teams, they also finished the season strongest winning 4 of their last 6 with their two losses coming against the top two ranked teams. We know their playoff history but previous seasons don’t work their way into our rankings… Even if it did, don’t you think it’s their time to shake off the demons of the past?

7. Clemerica (Pre-season Rank – #8, Record 10-8)

There was a point late in the season where the Clems were ranked #2. They swept a double header with an impressive game two win over Black Betty in week 13 and they owned a 10-3 record. It looked like Clems were the real deal with their solid defense and timely offense…. and then the wheels came off and the battleship began to sink (and any other metaphor you want to use for something really good falling apart). They didn’t win another game after that double header weekend losing 5 in a row to Kilo, Yetis, St. A, Runaways and Spike. We aren’t sure if this is just a case of the laid-back Clems not giving a shit about the regular season or if something is seriously wrong with the team but even with their horrible finish to the regular season they still own the 4th best defense in the league giving up only 10.5 runs a game. We probably would be looking at this team a little differently if they could have pulled off a win or two in those last 5 weeks.

8. Turkey’s Nest (Pre-season Rank- #7, Record 10-8)

Turkey’s Nest is the #2 seed Fashion Division but they are ranked 8th (behind the 3rd team in Godsy South who we just said lost 5 games in a row to end the season). How is that possible? Well – we aren’t saying the talent level on this team isn’t solid. When the Nest has their full roster, it’s clearly an above average team and likely worthy of a better ranking than middle of the pack. But the truth is they haven’t beaten a team above 500 since May 22. They have played under 500 ball themselves since June (5-6) and only 2 of their 10 wins were against teams ranked 1 through 7. They didn’t do enough to prove themselves in our ranking system but the season is over now and they are almost guaranteed to make it into the second round of playoffs thanks to their #2 seeding (they face an AT team they beat 30-5 in the last week of the season) so anything can happen.

9. Gutter 86ers (Pre-season Rank – #6, Record 9-9)

It looked like this season was going to be a huge bust for the 86ers. They came into the season ranked #6 and feeling good about their 2015 playoff run that put them one inning away from the finals… But the season started off really bad for the 86ers who owned a 3-7 record after 10 games. Since then, they rolled off 6 straight wins, lost to Betty in week 18th and then a heart breaking loss in make-up week to RSC. It’s not a great season but they finished with a 500 record and looked much better in the back half of the season. They have the 3rd ranked defense and scored at a better clip in the 2nd half than the first half so you can’t sleep on the 86ers in the playoffs. They have a rough road to get back to the Godsy finals but it’s not impossible. They are a more balanced team than their record reflects.

10. Roebling Sports Club (Pre-season Rank – #12, Record 8-10)

The other “back from the dead” team is RSC… After starting 0-7, RSC finished with an 8-3 record with their three loses coming to R Bar, Betty and a one-run loss to Runaways. After starting 0-7 and being the lowest ranked team in the entire league, RSC finished so strong they end up with a better ranking than we had the in the pre-season. Something came together for them and similar to the 86ers, they could be a tough out in the playoffs.

11. Bedford Yetis (Pre-season Rank – #10 Record 8-10)

The Yetis have had some impressive wins this season. They beat R Bar, 86ers and Clems. They also lost one run games to Spike Hill and Kilo, two run game to Turkey’s Nest and three run games to Three Kings and St. Anselm. They could easily be a 10-8 team… or better… But they finished the season 8-10 with the 11th ranking. We feel the Yetis are better than this record and ranking but we had a hard time putting them above RSC due to their 4-7 record since June.

12. Soft Spot Runaways (Pre-season Rank – #14, Record 7-11)

It’s clear they are a much improved team than last year. If you were reading these ranking, we talked a lot about how close they were in several games that didn’t go their way. Those close defeats became blow out losses in the 2nd half of the season. 4 of their last 5 losses were by 10 runs or more. They did pull off surprising wins against R Bar and Clems in the second half which bumps their rank up higher than we had in the pre-season.

13. AT All-Stars (Pre-season Rank – #11, Record 4-14)

Not the season that G Black was expecting… While they are still the league leaders in pre, post and during game celebrations, this season was a struggle for the All-Stars. Beyond their two wins against the Loggers, they have only beat the Teachers and Gibson.

14. Brooklyn Loggers (Pre-season Rank – #13, Record 5-13)

The Loggers were ranked #7 at one point this season but finish with a 13 ranking. It was a tale of two halves for one of the league favorite teams. After being 4-3 with impressive wins against R Bar and Yetis, they went 1-10 in their last 11 games.

14. Gibson (Pre-season Rank – #16, Record 3-15)

Much of the same for the Gibson this season… They played some tough games but lost a lot of games by big margins. Thanks to their regular season victory to TNT, they move up a spot in the rankings from the pre-season.

15. Turkey’s Nest Teachers (Last Week’s Rank – #14 Record 2-16)

They started the season 1-0…. Then beat St. Anselm in week 12.

For those that are interested, below is the week by week rankings for the entire season…..
