9/11 and the Playoffs

Sat, Sep 10, 2016

Never forget.

Hello Players, Fans, Managers of the WSL.

Tomorrow marks the beginning of the playoffs for the 2017 WSL Season.

For me, this is bitter sweet. It marks the beginning of the end of the summer season, where we’ll say goodbye to half the teams in the league after the first round of the playoffs (this is the sad part), but it also signals the end of another long season (this is the good part).

Through all the trials and tribulations of running a league, I can honestly say, I love this job. I love the players and the people and every thing this league stands for. I know this league isn’t perfect, but the beauty is that we literally have people (great people, amazing people, the best people!) working behind the scenes to make this league even better. I have heard you and we’re going to continue to make this league even better next season. This is never perfect, but we are really working hard to make it so. Thank you all for hanging in there with me, and us, to make this the BEST GODDAMN CO-ED SOFTBALL LEAGUE IN THE CITY! That is the goal!!

With all that being said, tomorrow is September 11th. For many of us, it was one of the worst, saddest, most devastating times in our lives. For me, working downtown, being in that area, volunteering for two days after the attack, it is very personal. But, obviously, this isn’t about me, it’s about us, and what tomorrow represents.

I know we get heated and we argue and fight and play hard, but ultimately, we’re out there playing a sport for fun, enjoying a great game with amazing people and way too much alcohol. We are very fortunate.

Many people in the world don’t have this opportunity, and those people who lost their lives on this day tomorrow no longer have this opportunity that we have. Again, we are very fortunate.

So, tomorrow when you get into the batters box, or when you take your position in the field, give yourself a moment, a second, to think about what tomorrow means, what we lost, and what we as a softball league have to be thankful for…which is each of us, all of us, that makes a whole, that is the heart and soul of the WSL. We’re a family.

With that being said. It’s the playoffs. I expect all of you to play hard, play safe, but take a moment to reflect.

Good luck, and thank you all for being part of this amazing league.

– H
