2016 Playoff Preview

Fri, Sep 9, 2016

The 2016 installment of the world famous WSL playoffs is upon us and it wouldn’t be the WSL without drama and conspiracy theories. This year, the investigative journalist who uncovered the conspiracy was a 2016 Blacktop Softball Presidents Award Winner – Bobby Maxwell. Before you ask what that award means, let me just quickly let you know that no one has any idea so it’s not worth your time. Regarding the conspiracy, it involved a team trying to get a girl who only played 5 games to be eligible to play this weekend because they only have 1 girl available and the rules state that girls must play 6 games. At the same time, there were a handful of other players that got exceptions to the playoff eligibility rule because they were injured or serving this great nation or whatever reason was approved by the rules committee.

Before we weigh in on the controversy, we must address a claim from the investigative journalist that “He has no dog in this fight” because it didn’t involved his team. If you know Mr. Maxwell, you know that “The Fight” is HIS DOG so it’s hard to tell if he is really upset by what is going on and stirring the pot to get people arguing or if he is just stirring the pot to get people arguing. There is also a chance that Mr. Maxwell himself does not know if he really cares. It’s the WSL editorial team’s belief that upon hitting “submit” on his facebook post about this topic, he sat back in his chair and pet his cat like a James Bond Villian or Dr. Evil & Mr. Bigglesworth. Upon seeing the facebook post, we could faintly hear “Let’s see what this does” in the background. Sure enough, it brought out the best of the WSL and lead to a very constructive and intelligent debate about fairness and fun. We are all better people now. It’s unlikely we will ever have a disagreement ever again. Thank god that’s over…. Now on to the match ups in round one.

TURKEY’S TEACHERS (8) vs BLACK BETTY (1) – 11am Field 1

Black Betty has made the finals in 10 straight years and starts this playoffs as the #1 overall seed after securing the best record in Black Betty history (16-2). The Teachers have the opposite record of Betty and lost twice to Betty in the regular season. This should be a blow out – right? Well, before you put this game in the books we need to only go back one year for an example of a top seed losing to a bottom seed…. And that bottom seed was the Teachers so nothing can be taken for granted. The Teachers have talent so if they can play an error free game and a few things go their way, this could be a much closer game than most are expecting.

Vegas Line: Black Betty favored by 8

BEDFORD YETIS vs THREE KINGS – 11am Field 2

The main storyline building up to this game is whether Three Kings is able to shake off the demons from the last two seasons and avoid another 1st round exit to a lower seed. The main difference this year is that Three Kings are a 4 seed v the 1 & 2 from previous seasons. Maybe that might help take the pressure off them and allow them to play their normal high octane game without fearing a repeat of previous years. The Yetis can play with any team in the league but had trouble being consistent during the season. They can also have trouble putting runs on the board which resulted in them having an offense ranked 12th in the league and that could be a problem when they play a high scoring team like Three Kings. The one time these two teams played each other this season, the field was a mess due to rain so it lead to a very low scoring game (Three Kings won 7-4). We think the key to this game is who scores first or gets out to the first 3 or 4 run lead. If the Kings score early and start to relax, they can pile on the runs. If Yetis score early, it might get Three Kings thinking about previous upsets and tighten up the team.

Vegas Line: Three Kings favored by 3.5

SOFTSPOT RUNAWAYS vs SPIKE HILL – 1pm Field 1

Spike Hill endured the mid-season loss of a legend (Mo) and the lack of their patriarch (O’Malley) for a big part of the year.  Despite everything, they managed to lock down an impressive 15-3 record and the #2 overall seed.  The team is deep and the roster is versatile. They have the strongest defense in the WSL and an offense that can hurt you in several ways. The story of the season for the Runaways was change. They added players from all over the place–the Yetis, the Bums, the Pinks, Gibby, Fall League and Saturday League.  Soft Spot started the season 0-3 but eventually started to gel. In the next five games the Runaways pulled out three victories with two one run, walk off, heartbreaking losses. It’s all about the confidence for the Runaways. They are better than their record but we aren’t sure if they realize that yet. Spike Hill crushed the Runaways the last time they played (22-3) and swept the season series.

Vegas Line: Spike Hill favored by 8.5

GIBSON vs KILO BRAVO – 1pm Field 2

Kilo grabbed the top seed in the Fashion division with an impressive 14-4 record. They easily beat Gibson both times they faced them during the regular season. Kilo has the top ranked offense. Gibson has the worst ranked offense. It would be nothing short of a miracle for Gibson to win this game.

Vegas Line: Kilo favored by 11.5

AT ALL-STARS vs TURKEY’S NEST – 3pm Field 1

2014 Champion T-NEST has had a well-documented up and down season. The one thing they did do well was beat teams with a bad record and AT is one of those teams. The Nest swept the season series vs AT and beat them 30-5 the last time they played. We know that Turkey’s might be down a girl and forced to take an out when that position in the line-up comes up but we don’t think that will matter. AT has only beat teams with 5 wins or less this year.

Vegas Line: Nest favored by 5.5

RSC vs ST. ANSELM – 3pm Field 2

St. Anselm’s/Gutter/Mendoza has had only one losing season in the last 14 years…and 2016 was no exception. They finished with a solid 11-7 record with impressive wins versus several top seeded teams.  RSC had a one of a kind season. The team started off slow with a month and a half losing streak. In the second half of the season, RSC woke up their bats, hit the cut off skillfully, and had really solid pitching. This combined for an unprecedented turn around turn around; whispered around McCarren Park as the “most amazing comeback ever”. When these two teams meet during the regular season, it was a 2 run victory for St. Anselm and we expect a similar close game.

Vegas Line: St. Anselm favored by 3

GUTTER 86ers vs CLEMERICA  5pm Field 1

These are two teams going in different directions. Clems started off strong and then collapsed during the final part of the season. 86ers started off horrible and then rebounded really well in the second half. These two teams are very similar and play a defense first game. During the regular season Clems beat the 86ers 14-5 but that was way back in April. This is likely the most evenly matched first round game in the league.

Vegas Line: Pick’em

LOGGERS vs R-BAR  5pm Field 2

Everyone was talking about how R Bar had fallen off in 2016 compared to 2015…. and then the season was over and their record was 12-6. Most teams would take that “fall off”. The 2015 Champs look like they are pulling together at the right time. It’s fair to say they aren’t as  strong as the powerhouse that took the title in 2015 but they are still a top 4 team and no one would be surprise to see them in the finals again. The Loggers finished the season losing 10 of their last 11. Despite the bad record, they always seem to be in games and never give up.  It may be easy to overlook the Loggers, but you can be sure R Bar will not take the Loggers lightly. The Loggers upset R Bar early in the season with a one run victory.

Vegas Line: R Bar favored by 5
