“The steps of power are often steps on sand” – Edward Counsel

Power Rankings: Week Thirteen

First off, we have had some technical difficulties with the official game recaps but we plan on bringing them back for week 14. We keep the Power Rankings going each week so if teams have a big weekend then they get rewarded in the rankings and that’s exactly what happened in week 13. Clems is living up to their Battleship name, St. Anselm is flying under the radar and Gutter 86ers have returned from the dead.

So….. once again,  we bring you a completely unnecessary and a “You can’t sink my Battleship” Power Ranking: Week Thirteen

1. Spike Hill (Last Week’s Rank – #1, Record 10-1)

Spike cashed in their “get out of game” free card this weekend and skipped their R bar game. Poor planning on Spike Hill’s part. R Bar just got finished drinking unhealthy amounts of alcohol for 6 days in a row at Adam and DLo’s wedding. Something tells us they weren’t in “game shape”. Missed opportunity for Spike Hill.

2. Clemerica (Last Week’s Rank – #5, Record 10-3)

Clems swept their double header this weekend with an expected win over Gibson and a rank-busting shocker over Black Betty. They now find themselves as the #2 ranked team in the league after never finishing a season with a record over 500. Let this sink in a little…. The #2 ranked Clems…. What is Breezy putting in his BBQ?

3. Black Betty (Last Week’s Rank – #2, Record 10-2)

Betty split their double header with a win over AT and a gut-wrenching loss to Clems in which they only scored 3 runs. The loss to Clems knocks Betty down to their lowest ranking of the season and exposes a potential flaw in the Betty “long ball” game plan. In both loses this season, the home runs didn’t come which meant the usually high powered offense was only able to muster up 6 & 3 runs. If the Betty don’t make adjustments they could catch one of these games in the playoffs and get bounced by a more balanced team.

4. St. Anselm (Last Week’s Rank – #6, Record 8-4)

What the fuck is St. A doing up here? Didn’t they just lose to Teachers? Well – yes… but they also beat Kilo this weekend and own an 8 win record. They have now won 7 of their last 9 games and 6 of their last 7 (with the one loss a stupid one run game with the Teachers).  At one point this season, St. A was ranked 10th… Nice bounce back for the team with many names. The rest of their season will let us know if they are for real. They still have to play Yetis, R Bar, Clems, Spike Hill, 3 Kings and Nest.

5. R Bar (Last Week’s Rank – #4, Record 7-4)

The league was ready to see a heavyweight fight between R Bar and Spike Hill (A potential finals match-up). Spike pulls a Hillexit…. R Bar goes gameless.

6. Kilo Bravo (Last Week’s Rank – #3, Record 9-4)

Last week we told you that Kilo got it’s groove back and this week they lose to St. Anselm. We aren’t saying St. Anselm is a push over but this was a game Kilo needed to have to quiet the skeptics. Now they play a red-hot Clems followed by top ranked Spike Hill after having lost 3 of their last 5.

7. Turkey’s Nest (Last Week’s Rank – #7, Record 6-5)

Nest split their double header by winning a close game versus the Yetis and losing a shocking one run game against the surging RSC. The Jekyll and Hyde Nesters are 3-5 in their last 8 games. It’s hard to trust that they are anything more than a slightly above-average team these days. We still believe they can beat any team on a given Sunday and the rest of their schedule looks easier than the last 8 games but we still can’t see them getting more that 10 wins at this point in the season.

8. Gutter 86ers (Last Week’s Rank – #11, Record 6-7)

We were all paying our respects to the 86ers at their funeral a few weeks ago but they have come back to life with a three game winning streak and a double header sweep this past weekend that included a demolition of 3 Kings 28-5. With an AT game this weekend, 86ers can easily pull themselves back up to 500 which didn’t seem possible last month.

9. Three Kings (Last Week’s Rank – #8, Record 5-5)

The Kings are in the middle of a 3 game losing streak after rolling off a 4 game winning streak. It seems the team is having trouble with injuries and attendance so a playoff run is not out of the question but a 500 regular season record in the middle of July is not something anyone expected.

10. Bedford Yetis (Last Week’s Rank – #9, Record 5-6)

The Yetis had another heart-breaking loss against Turkey’s Nest after suffering a one run loss against Spike Hill. They have one of the toughest late season schedules of any team and they are playing competitive ball but so far they are coming up on the short end of the stick. At this point, it doesn’t look promising that they will finish the season above 500.

11. Soft Spot Runaways (Last Week’s Rank – #10, Record 4-7)

No game this week… They start their post-July 4th play against R Bar this weekend.

12. Brooklyn Loggers (Last Week’s Rank – #12, Record 5-8)

Loggers ended their 5 game losing streak with a big win over Teachers.

13. Roebling Sports Club (Last Week’s Rank – #13, Record 4-8)

RSC beat the Nest this weekend and have now won 4 of their last 5 games with the one loss being a one run game against the Runaways. They are a hot team right now and their next three games are against teams ranked 12th, 14th and 8th…. Can this streak continue? Can RSC make it back to 500 after starting 0-7? If they can, that would be one of the most impressive turn-arounds ever in the WSL.

14 Turkey’s Nest Teachers (Last Week’s Rank – #14 Record 2-10)

Their solid win against St. Anselm didn’t carry over into the next week as they got crushed against the Loggers. They get their sister team this weekend.

15. AT All-Stars (Last Week’s Rank – #15, Record 2-9)

AT put up a good fight against Black Betty but still couldn’t end their losing steak which is now at 6 games and 9 of their last 10.

16. Gibson (Last Week’s Rank – #15, Record 1-11)
