Power Rankings: Week Ten

Thu, Jun 16, 2016

“We know that no one ever seizes power with the intention of relinquishing it.”  – George Orwell, 1984

Power Rankings: Week Ten

The first 10 game Sunday came sweeping into the WSL last weekend and took away the last few zeros in the standings. There are no more undefeated teams…. There are no more winless teams…. That’s good news for Gibson and RSC and not so good news for Black Betty. Overall, the games went off without a hitch and the road to making up all the rain outs has begun.

On behalf of the league, also want to thank everyone for unconsciously allowing the home team to win 9 of the 10 games to ensure that games were only 8.5 innings so we can fit in all games. You are all more considerate than you realize.

So without any further rain outs, we bring you a completely unnecessary and extremely considerate Power Rankings: Week Ten

1. Spike Hill (Last Week’s Rank – #3, Record 7-1)

There is a new king of the WSL….. Spike took both games of their double header but more importantly they beat undefeated Black Betty to give themselves a shot at the top ranking. Most people thought a Black Betty loss would open the door for Kilo to step into the top rank  but after Kilo was upset it cleared the way for Spike Hill to secure their place on top. As we have said all season long, Spike Hill has a simple and effective formula: Solid Defense at every position + High Batting Average hitters. They don’t rely on the long ball for offense and don’t get beat by it on defense.

2. Black Betty (Last Week’s Rank – #1, Record 7-1)

This past Sunday couldn’t have started any better for Black Betty. They were scheduled to play the 3 & 4 ranked teams. They dominated the first game of their doubleheader from the top of the 1st inning and secured a 24-8 victory over R Bar. As we previously noted, Betty benefitted from an easier schedule to start off the year so a dominate victory over a top ranked team helped squash any doubt that Betty was a legitimate contender. However, Spike Hill brought them back down to earth by holding the Betty offense to only 6 runs in their second game of the double headers.

3. Kilo Bravo (Last Week’s Rank – #3, Record 7-2)

Kilo was dominating teams week after week since their April 3rd loss to R Bar. They were averaging 20 points a game and most of the games were blow outs. That’s what made their week 10 performance so surprising. They only managed 7 runs and let up 25 runs against a struggling 86ers team. Kilo plays Black Betty this weekend so they can easily find themselves back in the top two ranking with a win. However, a loss to Betty might have some people questioning if Kilo is really the dominate team of their 7 game winning streak or if they just caught a lucky wave in their schedule. After Betty, Kilo will play other top ranked teams over the next 5 weeks including Clems, Spike and 3 Kings.

4. Clemerica (Last Week’s Rank – #6, Record 7-2)

The Clems bounced back from a loss to 3 Kings with a sweep of their double header. They played two tough teams in Nest and Loggers so they earned their wins and find themselves back to their highest ranking of their storybook season. You can chalk up a win this week to AT which would have Clems at 8-2 going into a big match up against R Bar in two weeks. The Clems can reach last year’s win total before July this year…

5. Three Kings (Last Week’s Rank – #7, Record 4-2)

While most teams are at the half way point of he season, 3 Kings is only 1/3 through their schedule due to rain outs and rescheduling. We previously thought 3 Kings would catch up in June with 3 doubleheaders but due to rain outs and scheduling we don’t have a 3 Kings doubleheader until the last week in June. All that doesn’t matter at this point because they are starting to click and get back to their winning ways with their third straight win against a good team when they walked off R Bar.

6. R Bar (Last Week’s Rank – #4, Record 5-4)

R Bar was missing some players and suffered an injury or two this past weekend. It was bad timing because they had a double header against two of the top teams in the league and lost them both. They face the 86ers this week who just upset Kilo Bravo. They need a win to get back on track and avoid a shocking 500 record ten games into the season.

7. Turkey’s Nest (Last Week’s Rank – #5, Record 5-3)

The Nest was held to an embarrassing 4 runs against the Clems and lost their only game of the weekend. It’s hard to predict how the Nest will play each weekend. They are a good team but their offense can betray them at times. In their three loses this season, they haven’t scored more than 8 runs.

8. St. Anselm (Last Week’s Rank – #9, Record 5-3)

Another close game victory this weekend moved St. A to a 5-3 record. They seem to have a habit of playing close games with 4 of their 5 victories secured by 3 runs or less. We believe they have won three of their games in the last inning as well… That being said, they still haven’t beat a team ranked higher than them but they will get a chance this Sunday against the Nest.

9. Bedford Yetis (Last Week’s Rank – #8, Record 4-4)

Tough loss this past weekend to a winless RSC squad. We all knew RSC was better than their 0-7 record but no one wanted to be the team that popped the RSC cherry…. Well this weekend the Yetis got popped and it knocked them down to a 500 record and the 9th rank. The Yetis look destined to stay around 500 all season but they have the talent to beat any team on any given Sunday.

10. Brooklyn Loggers (Last Week’s Rank – #8, Record 4-5)

Back to Back losses has the peoples’ team under 500 for their first time since May 1st. We sound like a broken record but the Loggers are always in every game. This week’s loss was by 2 to Clems. They haven’t lost a game by more than 4 runs. They play the best defensive team in the league this Sunday when they face off against Spike Hill so put your money on the under this week.

11. Soft Spot Runaways (Last Week’s Rank – #11, Record 3-5)

Heartbreaking loss to St. A’s this past weekend. We are starting to believe they are cursed

12. The Gutter 86ers (Last Week’s Rank – #12, Record 3-5)

The 86ers secured the upset of the week with their win over Kilo Bravo. We aren’t sure if it was the desire to get back at Q or just a desire to get their shit together but the 86ers played their best of game of the season this past weekend and may have saved their season with that huge upset win.

13. AT All-Stars (Last Week’s Rank – #13, Record 2-7)

They got beat up by Spike Hill this past weekend and face another tough team in the Clems this weekend. This season hasn’t been kind to AT. They lost 7 out of their last 8 games.

14. Roebling Sports Club (Last Week’s Rank – #16, Record 1-7)

It’s about fucking time… That is all.

15. Gibson (Last Week’s Rank – #15, Record 1-7)

The Gibson got their first win of the season against Turkey’s Teachers. They can breathe a little easier now and start looking at a win streak if they can knock off the other 1-7 team this weekend.

16. Turkey’s Nest Teachers (Last Week’s Rank – #14, Record 1-8)
