Power Rankings: Week Eleven

Tue, Jun 21, 2016

“The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any.” – Alice Walker

Power Rankings: Week Eleven

There is a good chance that 50% of you read the headline and Al Buttah’s voice came creeping into your head…. Rankings Week EEEEELLLEVVVVEEENNNN. Few people even understand where that comes from but it just works and we do it. One day we might be lucky enough to have Al Buttah do an Op Ed piece about seeing the WSL grow to be the league it is today. We will likely call it “From Ter-ee-Blay to Bananas: The WSL story spread on your bread like warm Buttah”. Or maybe it’s better as a book. Either way, I think we are light on Buttah this season. On a scale from zero to cowbell, we need Buttah closer to Cowbell. This is an open pitch for Al B to start writing for the WSL website. Join us Buttah.

Anyway – we had another week of double header / ten game Sundays and no one has melted under the sun or pressure. In fact, we had no upsets this week. All higher ranked teams won. Two games were decided by one run but the remaining 8 games were won by 6 or more runs. That doesn’t mean we didn’t see movement in the ranks or have high ranked teams lose. We just haven’t seen disruption in the flow of WSL games with this new format so we can likely call this a success – right? Maybe it’s something we schedule in 2017? Ten Game June Sundays? When we asked Buttah for his thoughts, he said “That would be Bonkers” but we aren’t sure if he was in favor of it or against it. Something to consider for next year….

Without any further discussion,  we bring you a completely unnecessary and hopefully unterribbs Power Ranking: Week Eleven

1. Spike Hill (Last Week’s Rank – #1, Record 9-1)

Just in case you questioned if Spike Hill was a legitimate #1 rank, they went out and swept another double header this weekend to become the first team to hit 9 wins. They started the day holding the 86ers to only 4 runs and ended the day with the rarely seen SHUT OUT of the Loggers! Think about how good a defense has to be to shut out a team…. (insert Buttah’s “Bananas” sample). Spike Hill is now leading the league in runs allowed with an impressive 7.3 average and raised their Runs Scored average to 14.3. When your runs against average is half your runs scored average, you can quickly quiet the skeptics.

2. Black Betty (Last Week’s Rank – #2, Record 8-1)

Black Betty rebounded from a tough loss to Spike Hill with a strong win over the previously ranked #3 Kilo Bravo. After taking advantage of a softer schedule in the beginning of the season, the Bettys have beaten R Bar and Kilo Bravo in back to back weekends (with that Spike Hill loss sandwiched in-between). If Betty can find a way to beat Turkey’s Nest this Sunday, they will go 3-1 against 4 teams that were ranked 5 or higher at the beginning of the month and cement themselves as a top contender for the title.

3. Clemerica (Last Week’s Rank – #4, Record 8-2)

Clems? What are you doing up here? It’s June 20th and Clems have matched their win total from last year and continue to impress with how they are winning. They are 2nd in the league in runs allowed with an 8.1 average. It’s time to stop assuming they will come back down to earth. They are clearly a top 6 team and if they continue at this pace then they will definitely be in contention for the title. Plus – the Mulligan factor is strong…. Danny is like the Lebron to Markow’s Irving and Bobby’s Love. (Two side notes – 1. we all know who JR is so we can strike that from these rankings & 2. When we say Bobby’s “Love” we are not talking about Kevin)

4. Three Kings (Last Week’s Rank – #5, Record 5-2)

The Kings are creeping up each week. In week 4, they were ranked 11th. They have rolled off 4 straight wins including upsets of higher ranked R Bar and Clems. If their schedule wasn’t 3 games behind, they might even find themselves ranked higher. This week’s impressive performance was not about who they beat but how they beat them. 3 Kings only had 8 players for most of the game and took two automatic outs each time in the batting order yet still pulled off a win by 8 runs. They will face another big test this Sunday against Kilo Bravo who is looking to bounce back after back to back loses. They finish up this weekend’s double header against RSC who have won 2 of their last 3.

3. Kilo Bravo (Last Week’s Rank – #3, Record 7-3)

After scoring in double digits in their first 7 games and over 19 runs in 6 of their first 7, Kilo hasn’t scored more than 9 runs in their last three games while losing two of them. What’s happening to this offensive machine? We know they were missing a few players in recent games but is that really the reason for the drop off in production? Similar to Black Betty, Kilo also benefitted from an easier start to their schedule. Of their 7 wins, 4 were against the lowest 4 ranked teams. They still have impressive wins over Nest and Yetis but they folded against Betty this week. If Kilo is going to get back on track they need to beat 3 Kings this weekend.

6. R Bar (Last Week’s Rank – #4, Record 6-4)

After getting swept in their double header last weekend with a short handed team, R Bar came back with a strong performance against the 86ers this week. Their last game before the July 4th break is against a higher ranked Clems. If both teams have a full squad, we will learn a lot about each team. I’m sure R Bar wants to send off Adam and D Lo with a win so we are expecting their A squad.

7. St. Anselm (Last Week’s Rank – #8, Record 6-3)

St. Anselm is all about the drama…. They only win games in dramatic fashion and by one or two runs. They have won 4 in a row now and three of the games were by 1 run. Fans with weak hearts need to stay home. The three loses for St. A were against the top three teams in the rankings. You can expect that they will sweep this weekend’s double header and end up with a 7-3 record going into July 4th weekend. Not bad for a team that was 2-3 on May 1st.

8. Turkey’s Nest (Last Week’s Rank – #7, Record 5-3)

The Nest is a hard team to figure out. You just have to trust that they are legit and capable of beating anyone but you aren’t sure what Nest team is going to show up each week. There’s the Nest team that beat 3 Kings and Spike Hill and there’s the Nest team that got blown out by Kilo & Clems (and beaten by R Bar). Which one will show up this week against Black Betty?

9. Bedford Yetis (Last Week’s Rank – #8, Record 5-4)

It’s make or break time for the Yetis. Their next 6 weeks are the hardest for any team in the league. Spike, Nest, St. A, Clems, Kilo and R Bar…. Holy shit. What did Winnie do to the Softball Gods (or Holland) to deserve a second half schedule like that? Winnie believes they are up for the task. Just the other day he said “Fuck those teams… I’ll personally beat the shit out of all of them.” Winnie is hard core.

10. Soft Spot Runaways (Last Week’s Rank – #11, Record 4-6)

The Runaways had a real chance this weekend to reach 500. They were facing a 3Kings team with only 8 players and then a lower ranked RSC. Somehow they lost by the largest margin of the season to an 8 person team in game one and no one is sure how that happened. They took Betty to extra innings, they lost to St. A’s twice by a combined 4 runs, they lost to Clems by two and all those teams have 10 players but Sunday they lost by 8 to a team with 8. Thankfully for them, they managed a one run win against RSC to finish the weekend on a high note.

11. Brooklyn Loggers (Last Week’s Rank – #10, Record 4-7)

At one point, the Loggers were 4-3 and we were singing their praises. It seems like the fat lady has sung. Loggers have lost 4 in a row with a rarely seen shut out loss in the first game of their double header. They also lost their second game 22-21 (another one run loss). They have 3 favorable matchups in the next three games so there is a chance that 500 can be secured by season’s end but the last few weeks killed the dream of a 10 win season. That being said, the Loggers will upset another team or two before the season is over.

12. The Gutter 86ers (Last Week’s Rank – #12, Record 3-7)

After that dominating win against Kilo Bravo, many thought the 86ers finally figured it all out. They were wrong. The 86ers followed up their big Kilo win by getting swept in a tough double header against Spike and R Bar. They totaled 7 runs over two games.

13. Roebling Sports Club (Last Week’s Rank – #14, Record 2-8)

After starting 0-7, they have won two of their last three with the loss being by one run. Things are picking up for RSC but it’s going to be hard passing last year’s win total at this point. They still have big games against 3 Kings, Nest, Betty and R Bar on their schedule.

14. AT All-Stars (Last Week’s Rank – #13, Record 2-8)

They have lost their last 5 and 8 of their last 9. Times are tough for AT. That being said, Gerald did post a picture on the WSL Facebook page of Stryker with cartoon shit coming out of his ass while sliding so they have that going for them.

15. Gibson (Last Week’s Rank – #15, Record 1-8)

16. Turkey’s Nest Teachers (Last Week’s Rank – #14, Record 1-9)
