Power Rankings: Week Twelve

June is over and Ten Game Sundays are done…. Well…. Not really. Due to popular demand (and rain), we are bringing Ten Game Sundays back in July! You want Double Headers? We got Double Headers! You want to wake up an hour earlier? We got 10am games just waiting for you! For those not excited about Ten Game Sundays, you will be pleased to hear that we should be back to our normal schedule by the 3rd week in July. Click on the “schedule” link above for the latest update on schedules.

Coming out of June (and the midway point in the season), we are seeing a few themes. First off, Spike Hill and Black Betty have owned the top two ranks for most of the season. Both teams only have one loss while the other top teams have 3 or more. Kilo, R Bar and this year’s “started from the bottom now I’m here” team – Clems – have been fighting it out for the next three spots in the rankings. The next tier of teams that make up the top half (Nest, Kings & St. Anselm) have had good and bad points in the season so it’s hard to tell where they are going. It wouldn’t surprise anyone if one of those teams were in the finals but it’s also possible that one of them could be a 500 team by the end of the year.

We hope everyone has a great 4th of July weekend and we will see you back on the fields July 10th….

So….. once again,  we bring you a completely unnecessary and very patriotic Power Ranking: Week Twelve

1. Spike Hill (Last Week’s Rank – #1, Record 10-1)

It wasn’t one of Spike Hill’s cleanest games but they managed to sneak by the Yetis with a one run victory this past Sunday. It was a fantastic June for the Spike Hill gang. They went 5-0 with a huge win over rival Black Betty and outscored their opponents 71-31. It doesn’t get much better than what Spike Hill has been doing this season.

2. Black Betty (Last Week’s Rank – #2, Record 9-1)

It’s hard to complain with the season Betty is having right now. They faced 4 of the best teams in the league in June (R Bar, Nest, Kilo and Spike) and walked away with 3 solid wins. The only hiccup in their season has been against the top ranked team. They are the only team in the top 3 in both Runs Scored per game and Runs Allowed per game.

3. Kilo Bravo (Last Week’s Rank – #5, Record 9-3)

So…. It’s safe to say Kilo got back on track this weekend. They swept their double header with impressive wins over SoftSpot and 3 Kings. We started to question Kilo after they lost two in a row and hadn’t scored more than 9 runs in three games but they shut down the doubters by scoring a combined 34 runs in two games against solid teams. They jump back to #3 this week.

4. R Bar (Last Week’s Rank – #6, Record 7-4)

Did anyone think that RBar would allow DLo and Adam to leave for their wedding with a loss hanging over them? Come on… You know better than that. Even against a higher ranked Clems team and down a few players to injuries, R Bar was not going to let their power couple say I DO until they said WE WON.

5. Clemerica (Last Week’s Rank – #3, Record 8-3)

Clems played a 6pm game this past Sunday. Looking back in the record books, Clems is 0-79 in their history in games played at 5pm or later….. That’s a made up number. We don’t keep those records. We just assume it’s incredibly hard for Clems to be playable drunk by 5pm. If we had to guess, we would assume the 1pm games are their sweet spot. Not too early, not too drunk. Luckily for them, Holland scheduled them to play Black Betty for their next game at noon.

6. St. Anselm (Last Week’s Rank – #7, Record 7-4)

Surprise.. St. A played another one run game. No wait – that’s not the surprise. The surprise was that St. A made us look foolish because we predicted they would sweep their double header this past weekend and instead they lost to the Teachers by 1 run. They won their 2nd game but they let one get away this weekend and could have been going into this weekend with 8 wins under their belt.

7. Turkey’s Nest (Last Week’s Rank – #8, Record 5-4)

Nest lost to Betty this weekend and dropped to a 5-4 record. They have now lost 4 of their last 6 games. If it wasn’t for their big upset of Spike Hill in May, they would be under 500. That being said, their 4 losses are against Kilo, R Bar, Clem and Betty so they aren’t losing to lower ranked teams but a 5-4 record going into July was not expected from the Nest.

8. Three Kings (Last Week’s Rank – #4, Record 5-4)

We had high hopes for 3 Kings coming into this weekend. We were thinking 7-2 and a #3 rank. Instead 3 Kings lost both games of their double header to Kilo and RSC. It’s a disappointing way for the 3 Kings to hit their midway point in the season. However, they are still tied in first in the Fashion South so the #2 seed in the Fashion conference is well within reach. Plus – a lot can happen in the remaining 9 games.

9. Bedford Yetis (Last Week’s Rank – #9, Record 5-5)

They put up a good fight against Spike Hill put lost by 1. It’s a good time for a break. Yetis come back with games again Nest, St. A, Clems, Kilo and R Bar in the next 5. It’s a tough road ahead.

10. Soft Spot Runaways (Last Week’s Rank – #11, Record 4-7)

They got caught in the middle of a Kilo resurrection and lost by 10. As we have said before, the Runaways could easily be above 500 right know if things broke their way a few games but they sit at 4-7 going into the July 4th weekend and won’t play again until July 17th.

11. The Gutter 86ers (Last Week’s Rank – #12, Record 4-7)

A good win over the Loggers. The 86ers put up 22 runs. If the 86ers score more than 13, they are 4-0. They have scored 8 or under in 6 of their 7 losses. They have a solid defense so as long as they can put up runs they can win games.

12. Brooklyn Loggers (Last Week’s Rank – #11, Record 4-8)

Loggers have lost 5 in a row now. They come out of the gates in July to two teams ranked under them but the 86ers were ranked under them too and that didn’t seem to help.

13. Roebling Sports Club (Last Week’s Rank – #14, Record 3-8)

After starting 0-7, they have won three of their la 4 with their loss being a one run game. More importantly, since Clinchy has started writing for the WSL website her team has won 3 of 4…

14 Turkey’s Nest Teachers (Last Week’s Rank – #16 Record 2-9)

TNT shocked the league with a big upset over St. Anselm. It was their first win since the first game of the season. The win gets them out of the rankings cellar.

14. AT All-Stars (Last Week’s Rank – #13, Record 2-8)

They have lost their last 6 in a row and face Black Betty in their first game back from the break.

16. Gibson (Last Week’s Rank – #15, Record 1-9)
