Power Rankings: Week Seven

“Being powerful is like being a lady. If you have to tell people you are, you aren’t.” – Margaret Thatcher

Power Rankings: Week Seven

The WSL was back to work in week seven and after the dust settled we are starting to see an odd trend in the numbers. Right now, only 6 teams are under 500 but at the same time 9 teams have a negative run differential. Of those 9 teams with a negative run differential, only one team has a Run Diff under 4 and it’s the two win Runaways. The reason for the abnormal run differential metric is the number of close games the WSL has had this year coupled with the occasional “Shit the Bed” blow out. In week 7 alone, there were 5 games decided by 2 runs or less with two wins by ten or more runs. Teams like St. Anselm have 3 wins on the season by a combined 5 runs. Yetis have 3 wins by a combined 7 runs. The 4-3 loggers lost their three games by a combined 10 runs (with 2 one run wins this past weekend). SoftSpot has played 6 games and 4 were decided by three runs or less. The 86ers are off to a disappointing start but even they have had 4 of their 6 games decided by 3 runs or less. While the standings are starting to show some separation between the top and bottom half of the league, other metrics are telling us that the parity of the league is still strong and there will be upsets every weekend.

Enough with the numbers….  we bring you a completely unnecessary and parity challenged Power Rankings: Week Seven

1. Black Betty (Last Week’s Rank – #1, Record 5-0)

SoftSpot Specials put a scare into the top ranked team but Rookie of the Year candidate Julio Angel bailed them out in extra innings with a 2 run home run. The Betty is getting the job done but the big tests will be in June when they play the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th ranked teams in the first three weeks.

2. Spike Hill (Last Week’s Rank – #2, Record 5-0)

Spike Hill has a formula… They don’t overpower teams. They shut them down. They are leading the league in fewest runs allowed per game and have one of the most balanced teams in the league. Their defense will be tested over the next few weeks when they face Nest, 3 Kings and Black Betty who all average more runs per game than Spike Hill has allowed against any opponent so far.

3. Kilo Bravo (Last Week’s Rank – #4, Record 5-1)

Kilo had a bye week this weekend but secured the only victory in week 6 when they beat an AT team on a muddy week six field. After losing game one, they have rolled off 5 straight wins in dominating form. They are averaging an insane 21 runs per game and they are heavy favorites to win their next three games…. If it wasn’t for that 2 run loss in week one to R Bar, they would easily be the undisputed top ranked team. With Betty and Spike Hill facing tough competition over the next few weeks, it wouldn’t surprise anyone to see Kilo ranked #1 at some point in June.

4. Clemerica (Last Week’s Rank – #5, Record 5-1)

Just like Kilo, Clems have rolled off 5 straight wins since their opening day loss. The Battleship is blasting their way through the schedule while holding teams to the second fewest runs per game in the entire league. They face their strongest competition since opening day when they play a well rested Three Kings team this weekend. The schedule gets even more challenging in June when they play Black Betty, Nest, Loggers and R Bar. Clems also leads the league in Team Photos posted to Facebook.

5. R Bar (Last Week’s Rank – #3, Record 4-2)

R Bar split their week seven double header with a tough one run loss to Loggers and a commanding win over AT. The loss knocked R Bar down to their lowest ranking of the season but still in the top 5. They are heavy favorites to win their next two games against opponents with a combined 1-11 record and then face top ranked Black Betty on June 12th so R Bar can easily work their way back up the ranks.

6. Turkey’s Nest (Last Week’s Rank – #6, Record 4-2)

The last three Nest victories were by a margin of 2 runs or less. They have allowed more runs than they have scored but still find themselves with a 4-2 record. Their lack of offense will cause them a problem against a Spike Hill team that doesn’t let up many runs. They will go into the weekend as underdogs but a win against Spike Hill will quiet some of the Nest skeptics (and reshape the rankings).

7. Brooklyn Loggers (Last Week’s Rank – #8, Record 4-3)

It’s time to give the Loggers the respect they deserve. They swept this past weekend’s double header with two 1 run victories against higher ranked teams and find themselves ranked 7th after starting the season ranked 14th. They have three loses but all three were by 4 runs or less and two were against higher ranked teams. They also held Kilo to the lowest runs scored of any team this season.

8. Three Kings (Last Week’s Rank – #9, Record 2-2)

They have only played 4 games after 7 weeks…. We partially feel bad for Three Kings but we are also jealous of their June schedule. They will play 7 games in 4 weekends. If their high powered offense is clicking, they could own June and ride that wave until the playoffs. Before they start dreaming of their Lucky 7 June they need to face one of the hottest teams in the league this weekend in the Clems

9. Bedford Yetis (Last Week’s Rank – #7, Record 3-3)

This season has been a roller coaster for the Yetis. Started the season 2-0, got destroyed in game 3, got a sloppy win in game 4, lost a close game in game 5 and then lost a heartbreaking 1 run game in game 6. This season’s ride has brought the Yetis to a 500 record going into a match up against the struggling 86ers.

10. St. Anselm (Last Week’s Rank – #10, Record 3-3)

So much drama in St. Anselm’s wins…. So much heartbreak in their losses. We previously mentioned their three wins were by 5 runs but two of those win came in the 9th inning… and one of their loses came in the 9th inning. They also lost to Black Betty and Clems who they owned in 2015. They will try for a normal but dominating win when they face AT this weekend.

11. Soft Spot Runaways (Last Week’s Rank – #11, Record 2-4)

Speaking of heartbreaking losses…. The Runaways are clearly better than their 2-4 record. They lost by 2 in extra innings against Black Betty. They lost by 2 against Clems. They lost by 3 against St. Anselm. So many “what ifs” for Softspot this season.

12. The Gutter 86ers (Last Week’s Rank – #12, Record 2-4)

The 86es went into the season ranked 6th and now find themselves ranked 12th after 6 games. They are facing a must win game this weekend against the Yetis if they are going to turn their season around. After a June 5th match up against Gibson, they face Kilo, R Bar, Spike Hill and Loggers. Their season could slip away from them if they don’t take care of business in the next couple of weeks.

13. AT All-Stars (Last Week’s Rank – #13, Record 2-5)

AT leads the league in a category… Most games played. Somehow they have 7 games played already when teams like 3 Kings have 4…. No double headers for you AT!

14. Turkey’s Nest Teachers (Last Week’s Rank – #14, Record 1-5)

5 straight losses after winning the season opener. Tough Match-Up against R Bar this weekend.

15. Gibson (Last Week’s Rank – #15, Record 0-6)

Gibson plays top ranked Black Betty this weekend. Their first win of the season could be the biggest upset in the season….

16. Roebling Sports Club (Last Week’s Rank – #16, Record 0-6)

Have we mentioned how much we love the Wings at RSC?
