Power Rankings: Week Five

It was an ugly day for softball. Cold, misty drizzle which started before we woke up and ended long after the last game. But thanks to the incredible work of Mike McNelis and our grounds crew (as well as a little luck), we were able to get in all the games. Mike was at McCarren Park before 9am and stayed until almost 8pm to make sure everything worked out. He also filled in to ump a game after an ump didn’t show up. 11 hours at McCarren in ugly weather… Keeping the league on it’s feet! Great work Mike.

To show our appreciation, Dubin agreed to get a McNelis tattoo on his right arm. (Side Note – there is a chance Dubin was originally planning on getting this tattoo anyway and just made it seem like he was doing it to show his appreciation for Sunday… We can’t tell for sure. Either way, we are all winners now.)

Getting back to our Power Rankings, not much has changed week over week. Most teams held serve and did what they had to do. We had one upset between the Softspot Runaways and 86ers as well as the Three Kings bouncing back from their off week with a win over higher ranked Yetis but most of the games had the higher ranked teams winning which meant the rankings weren’t going to change much. Next week might not bring that much change either because teams are rescheduling due to Mother’s Day. We are down to 5 games right now and it’s only Monday…. Ouch….

Ok – so without any further discussion, we bring you a completely unnecessary and a misty drizzled Power Rankings: Week Five

1. Black Betty (Last Week’s Rank – #1, Record 4-0)

This week’s win is further proof that the Betty is starting the season on the right track. After failing to beat Impose (St. Anselm) twice last year, they put together a complete effort even in sloppy weather conditions to easily secure the win and put last year’s loses behind them. That being said, they have a huge match up against Clems this weekend and if they lose they could find themselves outside of the top four come next week.

2. Spike Hill (Last Week’s Rank – #2, Record 4-0)

They taught the Teachers a lesson in attendence and moved to 4-0. After putting up low run totals in their previous three wins, they lead the league in Runs Scored this week with 24.

3. R Bar (Last Week’s Rank – #4, Record 3-1)

R Bar still hasn’t put it all together yet. They are doing fine with a 3-1 record after 5 weeks but once the weather gets better and attendance gets better they will start to show their 2015 championship form. They might also be off again this week due to Loggers calling in their “Get out of Game” free card for Mother’s Day.

4. Kilo Bravo (Last Week’s Rank – #5, Record 4-1)

We aren’t sure if it was the weather or the solid play of the Loggers but Kilo didn’t run away with this week’s game they way they did the previous three weeks. They still got the win and continue to dominate in Runs Scored so no one in Kilo town should be concerned.

5. Clemerica (Last Week’s Rank – #5, Record 4-1)

Four wins in a row after their opening week loss to Spike Hill…. Next up – Black Betty…. Since Betty is a bunch of Mama’s boys and they already used their reschedule card, they could be light on players next Sunday and ripe for an upset. Listening to Clems talk these days, it sounds like they wouldn’t even consider a win over Black Betty an upset anymore. Their confidence is increasing on a weekly basis.

6. Turkey’s Nest (Last Week’s Rank – #6, Record 3-2)

They put up a fight against R Bar and had the lead going into the 5th. The wheels came off a bit in the final few innings and the Nest finds themselves at 3-2 going into a big match up with the Yetis. One of these teams will have early success erased into 500 play this sunday.

7. Bedford Yetis (Last Week’s Rank – #7, Record 3-2)

Their offense was rained out this week and they only scrapped together 4 runs. They held a powerful Three Kings offense to 7 but didn’t take advantage of it. The Yetis continue to be a mystery to the league. Was their Week 2 win against R Bar a lucky day or a sign of their true potential? A lot will be answered this weekend when they play Turkey’s Nest.

8. Brooklyn Loggers (Last Week’s Rank – #10, Record 2-3)

Tough and scrappy. They always seem to be in games toward the end and never let teams blow them out. They faced three power house teams in R Bar, Kilo and Three Kings and held their own. They have a bye week next Sunday.

9. Three Kings (Last Week’s Rank – #11, Record 2-2)

They got the Win they needed. The weather likely slowed down their offense as well as the Yeti defense. At 2-2, they look to start putting together a string of wins. They should be too much for Gibson to handle next week but the May 15th match up vs Kilo should be a slugfest.

10. St. Anselm (Last Week’s Rank – #8, Record 2-3)

The schedule makers didn’t do St. Anselm any favors to start the season. They have played Spike Hill, Clems and Black Betty in the first few weeks (Rank 1, 2 and 5). They are a solid team that will easily finish above 500 so don’t look too much into their record right now. They have a bye week next week….

11. Soft Spot Runaways (Last Week’s Rank – #12, Record 2-3)

Big upset for the Runaways. They beat the 86ers after beating the Teachers the week before. With RSC due up this week, they are looking to be at 500 in week 6 after going 0-3. That would be an impressive turnaround from the start of the season.

12. The Gutter 86ers (Last Week’s Rank – #9, Record 2-3)

They came into the season ranked 6th and have tumbled to 12th. Bad loss against the Runaways this weekend and a tough few games ahead after their bye week… St. Anselm, Yetis and Kilo await their chance at 86ing the 86ers. They can still rebound and get back into 2015 form but they need to start scoring more runs.

13. AT All-Stars (Last Week’s Rank – #12, Record 2-3)

Lost three in a row after their opening day win against the Loggers but came to the field ready to play ball this weekend no matter what the conditions. They easily beat Gibson to move to 2-3 on the season with a tough match up against Kilo this weekend.

14. Turkey’s Nest Teachers (Last Week’s Rank – #14, Record 1-4)

TNT had several players miss the game this week due to the misty conditions. After a promising opening day, they have lost 4 in a row. They have a bye week this weekend and come back to a tough Clems team the following weekend.

15. Gibson (Last Week’s Rank – #15, Record 0-5)

After a one run loss in week one, they have lost 4 straight by an average of 11+ runs.

16. Roebling Sports Club (Last Week’s Rank – #16, Record 0-5)

Still the Best Wings in Williamsburg…. But we had a chance to feast on Breezy wings on Sunday and they were pretty fucking good too… Come on RSC – you are better than this! We are predicting you get your first win this weekend.
