Power Rankings: Week Eight

Power Rankings: Week Eight

We made it to Memorial Day weekend and while it’s not quite the half way point of the season you have enough games to start getting a good feel for how the season will shape up. There haven’t been too many surprises but a few things are popping up.

First off, the Godsy North division is in the gutter right now (pun intended). Joe Godsy actually called up Holland and asked that his name be removed from the Godsy North division. That’s how bad it’s been. After Black Betty, the rest of the teams are a combined 3-18. The weak showing of G North is being driven by the surprisingly poor start of the 86ers and RSC. They still have time to turn their seasons around but it’s very doubtful they can get back to their 2015 records at this point so we anticipate G North having the weakest overall record of all divisions by the end of the season.

On a more positive note, you have to be impressed with the way Kilo Bravo has started the season. They are 6-1 and haven’t lost since a close game one against last year’s champs. Their offensive output is off the charts right now and it’s doubtful they will slow down anytime soon thanks to favorable match ups for the next couple of weeks.

Godsy South is probably the most balanced division the league has seen in years. The last place team in Godsy South has more wins than the last place team in all other divisions combined.  The Runaways currently occupy 4th in the Godsy South but would be in 2nd in G North.

The Loggers and Three Kings are on a rankings Roller Coaster this season. The Loggers started at 13, dropped to 14, went as high as 7 and now are back to 10. Three Kings started at 4, dropped as low as 11 and now are back to 7. Part of the Three Kings ride is due to their crazy schedule to start the season (they have only played 5 games out of 8 weeks) but if you saw the way they played against Clems yesterday, it’s doubtful they will fall again this season. The Loggers are a scrappy team that finds a way to be in every game but too many close games leave them vulnerable to several ups and downs.

All that being said, June is going to be an amazing month for the WSL. The match-ups that kick off the month include many top ranked teams mixed up with double headers and 10 game Sundays. A lot will change in June and it’s likely rankings will change drastically.

For the last time in May, we bring you a completely unnecessary and soon to be crazy Power Rankings: Week Eight

1. Black Betty (Last Week’s Rank – #1, Record 6-0)

Yes – The Betty is the last undefeated team standing…. but the truth is they have had an easy schedule so far so it’s hard to judge if their record is more of a reflection of their ability or their opponents. June will let us know if Betty is worthy of the #1 ranking. They play Yetis, Clems, R Bar and Spike Hill over the first two weekends then they play Kilo Bravo and Turkey’s Nest to close out the month. All 6 teams are over 500 and ranked in the top half of the league. If Betty is going to hold on to the top rank, they likely need to run the table or at least go 5-1. That will be extremely difficult considering the quality of teams they will play.

2. Kilo Bravo (Last Week’s Rank – #3, Record 6-1)

Kilo continues to work their way up the rankings as other teams lose. They moved up last week when R Bar lost and they move up this week when Spike Hill lost. They continue to score over 20 runs a game and hold opponents to half of that. If Betty finds a way to win both double headers to start off June, Kilo will still have a chance to move up the rankings thanks to their head-to-head match up with betty on June 19th.

3. Spike Hill (Last Week’s Rank – #2, Record 5-1)

Spike suffered their first loss of the season against Turkey’s Nest this past weekend. While Spike Hill was favored to win, we wouldn’t call it an upset. This was a good game between two solid teams. Spike Hill let up a few more runs than they have allowed all season and scored a few less than their average. These loses will happen during a regular season. Spike still leads the league in runs allowed and is the only team allowing fewer than 9 runs per game.

4. R Bar (Last Week’s Rank – #5, Record 5-2)

Two loses by a total of 3 runs…. R Bar continues to score at will (averaging over 18 runs a game) and their defense is coming back into championship form after letting up 19 & 18 runs in the first two games. Since then, they have held teams to under 8 runs in four of the last five games. R Bar fans should circle June 12th on their calendar. They play Three Kings and Black Betty in a double header. There won’t be a more exciting day for R Bar ball this entire season.

5. Turkey’s Nest (Last Week’s Rank – #6, Record 5-2)

Nest has to be feeling good about themselves after securing their most impressive win since their week one upset of 3 Kings. They hung the first loss on Spike Hill and appeared to have a full team playing up to their potential.

6. Clemerica (Last Week’s Rank – #4, Record 5-2)

Disappointing weekend for Clems… After rolling off 5 straight wins, they ran into a Three Kings offense that was a little too much to handle. Clems let up the most runs they have allowed all season to Three Kings when they lost 16-12. Clems can quickly put this loss behind them if they can find a way to beat top ranked Black Betty in their next game.

7. Three Kings (Last Week’s Rank – #8, Record 3-2)

The Three Kings offense looked ready to jump into their crazy June games  after an impressive display of power against the Clems. Three Kings is back above 500 and positioned to make a move up the rankings with games against Spike Hill and R Bar in the first two weeks of June.

8. Bedford Yetis (Last Week’s Rank – #9, Record 4-3)

Win two, Lose one… Win one, Lose two… Win one…. While the team is having their ups and downs, their faith in their Manager is solid. “The guy is like a father to us” said Baby Boy.

9. St. Anselm (Last Week’s Rank – #10, Record 4-3)

While St. Anselm has a winning record, they haven’t beaten a team ranked higher than their team this season…. and they won’t get a chance to do that until their Jun 19th game against Turkey’s Nest.

10. Brooklyn Loggers (Last Week’s Rank – #8, Record 4-4)

Of the 4 wins, only one was by more than 4 runs. Of the 4 loses, all of them were by 4 runs or less. You are guaranteed an exciting game if you are watching the Loggers

11. Soft Spot Runaways (Last Week’s Rank – #11, Record 3-4)

Big win against the Loggers this weekend. The Specials have won 3 of their last 4 games with their only loss coming an extra inning game with the top ranked Bettys.

12. The Gutter 86ers (Last Week’s Rank – #12, Record 2-5)

Heartbreaking loss after heartbreaking loss…. The last three games were lost by 3 runs, 1 run and 4 runs…. With Gibson coming up next weekend, the 86ers must find a way to get another win under their belt before embarking on a crazy schedule that includes Kilo, Spike and R Bar over 2 weeks.

13. AT All-Stars (Last Week’s Rank – #13, Record 2-6)

They lost but they had some really good Dark and Stormies on the sidelines…. delicious. Always winners when it comes to the Pre and Post game.

14. Turkey’s Nest Teachers (Last Week’s Rank – #14, Record 1-6)

Crushing loss to R Bar this past weekend.

15. Gibson (Last Week’s Rank – #15, Record 0-7)

Gibson continues to show a lot of fight but can’t seem to get over the hump.

16. Roebling Sports Club (Last Week’s Rank – #16, Record 0-7)
