Pre-Season Wrap-up Report: Fashion North

Fri, Apr 1, 2016

Fashion North’s top two teams are the highest ranked top two teams in any division. Last year’s champions and Kilo Bravo are a solid 1-2 punch. There appears to be a drop off in this division after the top two but both Yetis and Gibson have made changes to their roster and the strength of this division could end up surprising people.

R Bar

Winning the 2015 championship was a long time coming for R Bar. They have been a dominate team in the WSL for years and finally broke through last year to win the title. There are a few interesting storylines heading into 2016 for R Bar. First off, how will they handle being the top team going into 2016? Does the fame and fortune that comes with being champions change who they are? Secondly, this is Bobby Knapp’s farewell season. He has been in the league forever and if the WSL kept records he would easily be in the top 5 for total HRs and RBIs. Does his last season motivate R Bar to repeat as champions? Thirdly, Bubbs appears to have two working ankles this season. All those times he pulled up at second base while the ball he hit was rolling around Bedford Ave will now be HRs. Does a healthy Bubbs make R Bar even more dominate? Lots of questions but nothing that makes R Bar fans too worried about 2016.

Players Lost: Pate Fanule (moved), Matt Seaman (Signed by Yetis), Sam Griswold (Signed by Yetis) and Mikey Black (Signed by Runaways)

Key Additions: Daniel Chaupis (Free Agent from AT), Anthony Ferante (Saturday League) and Justin Heyward

Player to watch: Evan Maiorino. He started 2015 as a backup and played his way into a key figure in R Bar’s championship run. R Bar is expecting him to take the next step this year and be a cornerstone for their team.

Pre-season Power Rankings: #1

2016 prediction: Adam and D Lo get married and those who attend this all-inclusive Mexican resort wedding will lose several days of their life due to the physical abuse they put their bodies through. Regarding R Bar, we expect them to maintain first place for the entire season, be the top seed and roll to the finals. Their combined record for the past three seasons is 46 – 8. They are beasts.

Kilo Bravo

The artists formerly know as Enids are now Kilo Bravo but their “Pinks” nickname appears to be holding on for at least another season. Manager Dominic Howlett said “This is the year of the Pinks… Anyone who thinks it is their year will be sadly mistaken.” When asked about expectations for the season, Howlett went on to say that he thinks his team can win 15 or 16 games this year. It sounds like a lofty goal but they weren’t far off from that win total last year when they netted 14 wins. We did ask Howlett if the team forced Mike Q to start wearing glasses this year to mold his image into something more Pinkish but he refused to comment… More investigation will need to be done on this matter.

Players Lost: Mike V & Jen 10 (Married / Westchester), Sam Turner (Kid/ Westchester), Pat Sullivan (Retired) and Czr Fisher (Signed by Runaways)

Key Additions: Mike Q (Free Agent from 86ers), Steve Peralta (Free Agent from Black Betty) and some newbies from Jersey – Danny Rash, Alicia Mattiello and Matt Tingleys

Player to watch: Allen Boseman. They guy has embarked on some insane fitness routine in the offseason (@absfitness) and is doing shit like Olympian rings… We aren’t sure how this translates to softball but we know that Kilo is ready in case an Olympian gymnastics battle breaks out in McCarren.

Pre-season Power Rankings: #5

2016 prediction: Manager Howlett is talking a big game and his team is likely to back up his talk but we still think R Bar is the favorite in this division based on last year’s performance and their three year track record. If the Pinks don’t hit their win total goal, they won’t be far off. You can be sure that they will be no lower than the 3 seed in the Fashion division playoffs.

Bedford Yetis

Newly minted Yetis manager Winston Muentes quickly started putting his mark on this team in the offseason with some impressive free agent acquisitions. Seeman and Griswold, part of last years’ championship winning R Bar team, will bring a winning tradition to a team that is looking to build off their solid finish to the end of last season. Winnie also made a few more interesting free agent moves that will take a little time to click but has potential for big payoffs.

Players Lost: Joey Caraballo (moved), Nick Pizza (Season ending injury) and Stephanie Peralta (retired)

Key Additions: Matt Seeman (Free Agent from R Bar), Sam Griswold (Free Agent from R Bar), Brendon Calenda and Meaghan Shea.

Player(s) to watch: Brandon Calenda. Smooth as butter in the field and a solid bat. Yetis will need this kid to step up this year if they are going to have a good season.

Pre-season Power Rankings: #10

2016 prediction: There are a lot of unknowns for the Yetis but it’s hard to imagine they finish higher than third in Fashion north because there are two really strong teams sitting above them…. But we see an improved year and 5th seed in the playoffs.

Gibson is pissed off… They are tired of all the bullshit. They had a rough season last year and the Pre-Season Power Rankings have them at #16. But Manager Adrian Franco thinks his team’s anger and frustration is the first step toward rebuilding the team. “Gibson is building a new identity  and will regain the respect that was lost years ago” said Franco. After becoming the interim manager last season, Franco was voted in as the full time manager this year and brought some more swagger to the team by naming Aaron Klienmann as his co-manager.

Players Lost: David Kovner (retired), Sam Warden (signed by Spike Hill) and Jonathan Matamoros (season ending injury)

Key Additions: It’s a secret…. Gibson isn’t letting anyone know about who they picked up. They will show you once you get on the field with them but rumors are they added up to 6 new players who all have local roots.

Player to watch: Jay “Ferrari” Ferreira. The Gibson SS is a 5 tool player that joined Gibson late last season. They are expecting big things from this guy in 2016.

Pre-season Power Rankings: #16

2016 prediction: We want to believe… It would be good for the league to see Gibson competitive again. We already ranked them #16 in the power rankings so we don’t need to make any further predictions but if Gibson can win their season opening game against Yetis then it would go a long way toward their goal of regaining the respect of the league.
