Power Rankings: Week Three

Mon, Apr 18, 2016

“Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.” – Abraham Lincoln

Power Rankings: Week Three

As the weather gets better, so does the defense. After a week one that saw 15 of 16 teams score more than ten runs (with 9 scoring 18 or more), week three had teams coming back down to earth with 9 teams scoring 11 or less and 5 teams scoring in single digits. The rust is starting to shake off but that still hasn’t stopped the WSL from demonstrating the balance of power across the league. We are down to 3 undefeated teams after only 3 weeks and if the scheduling gods didn’t curse week 4 we would have been down to 1 or 2 undefeated teams after 4 weeks.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, it appears we are being robbed of two amazing games this weekend. Spike Hill was scheduled to play Black Betty (with top rank on the line) and R Bar was scheduled to play Three Kings. This could have been an amazing weekend of softball but maybe it’s for the best because now we get these potential top seed battles happening at the end of the season. Plus – we still have key games like Nest vs Kilo and Clems vs 86ers which will have huge implications on the rankings.

So once again, we bring you a completely unnecessary and soon to be repetitive Power Rankings: Week Three

1. Black Betty (Last Week’s Rank – #1)

The Betty leads the league in “Runs Against” (20). They are the only team  in the league to hold opponents to single digit runs in all three games so their formula for success is rooted in defense. As they move on to the Godsy South teams, their strong start will be put to the test as they face Clems and Impose (St. Anselm) who went a collective 3-0 against Black Betty last year.

2. Spike Hill (Last Week’s Rank – #2)

We keep talking about the Betty’s strong defensive start but Spike Hill is right behind Betty by only allowing 22 runs against this season and have faced arguably tougher opponents (based on our rankings). Spike Hill is not blowing out teams (having only scored 35 runs this season – 10th best in the league) but they have one of the most complete teams in the league and get the job done each week.

3. Turkey’s Nest (Last Week’s Rank – #3)

Last week we said that the Turkey’s Nest could end up on the wrong side of an upset because they were missing a few key players. We were wrong….. but not by much. They squeezed out a one run win against AT and remain one of only three undefeated teams after three weeks.

4. R Bar (Last Week’s Rank – #4)

The R Bar shook off last week’s loss and looked like their usual self in a 20-5 win over Gibson.

5. Kilo Bravo (Last Week’s Rank – #5)

Kilo Bravo battled the Yetis in the first ever WSL football game this past weekend and won 40-15. They now have the highest Runs Scored in the league (78) with the second highest scoring team 21 runs less than Kilo…. only 3 games into the season. Big match up this weekend against Turkey’s Nest.

6. Clemerica (Last Week’s Rank – #9)

Really impressive win this past weekend against a St. Anselm team that almost beat Spike Hill the week before. Oddly enough, the Clems have scored the fewest runs of any team in the league yet still have a 2-1 record. If they can find a way to score more runs (like if they can add an all-star SS in the near future) they will be a really rough opponent for any team in the league.

7. The Gutter 86ers (Last Week’s Rank – #10)

The 86ers continue the Godsy division trend of lock down defense. The 86ers are 3rd in runs allowed with 23 (behind Spike and Betty). They have won two in a row and have a huge match up against Clems coming up this week.

8. Bedford Yetis (Last Week’s Rank – #7)

Just when fans started to jump on the Yetis’ bandwagon they let up the most “runs against” in recent memory. We didn’t jump them up the charts too much after the R Bar upset and we aren’t going to drop them down too much after this week’s loss to Kilo. Let’s see what happens this week against AT.

9. St. Anselm (Last Week’s Rank – #8)

They only scored 3 runs against Clems and now start the season 1-2. It’s rare back to back loses for this team which looks to avoid an even more rare three game losing streak when they face RSC this weekend.

10. Brooklyn Loggers (Last Week’s Rank – #14)

The Loggers secured the big upset of the weekend by clobbering Three Kings 23 – 11 and moving up the Power Rankings to the 10th spot. They have let up the second fewest runs in the Joe Fashion Division and were a few innings away from upsetting Turkey’s Nest the week before. Something is brewing in the Loggers’ cabin.

11. Three Kings (Last Week’s Rank – #6)

This is not how we expected the season to start for the Three Kings. Most people had penciled in a 3-0 start for the Kings and now they sit at 1-2 with loses to two teams that started the season ranked under them. It’s still very likely that they bounce back and dominate the way we expected. This weekend’s off week might be a blessing for them right now…. They can come back in week 5 and restart the season.

12. AT All-Stars (Last Week’s Rank – #11)

Tough loss to the Nest this past Sunday. Looking to bounce back against the Yetis.

13. Turkey’s Nest Teachers (Last Week’s Rank – #13)

They put up a good fight against Black Betty. The final scored didn’t reflect how close the games was in the beginning.

14. Soft Spot Runaways (Last Week’s Rank – #14)

Looking for their first win of the season next week when they face TNT.

15. Gibson (Last Week’s Rank – #15)

They look to rediscover their week one offense when they battle the Loggers this Sunday.

16. Roebling Sports Club (Last Week’s Rank – #12)

Best Wings in Williamsburg.
