Power Rankings: Week Four

Tue, Apr 26, 2016

“Power is not revealed by striking hard or often, but by striking true” – Honore’ de Balzac

Power Rankings: Week Four

The top four ranked teams in the pre-season all had an off week in Week Four so it’s not a surprise that the 5th ranked team (Kilo Bravo) is the highlight of this week. They have been on a roll and knocked off an undefeated team to move up the rankings. This was our first weekend ranking teams when others didn’t play so we needed to go back into the algorithm and make a few adjustments. Once we finish coding this complex ranking system, we will sell it and buy everyone in the league some Breezy BBQ….

But wait – what did you say? We don’t need to wait? Breezy BBQ will be available to all this Sunday for the 14th anniversary of Clem’s? Are you serious? And it starts at 2pm? And DJ DBA will be there? And Drink Specials and Prizes? Holy shit!

(Yes – this is a shameless plug but we don’t get paid to work for the WSL so if someone drops off a bucket of ribs we will basically say anything. Thankfully this is a product we fully endorse based on several rounds of testing and retesting. Swing by Clems on Sunday before or after your game. Wish them a happy anniversary and grab some BBQ. It treats what ails you.)

So once again, we bring you a completely unnecessary and a bye-week confused Power Rankings: Week Four

1. Black Betty (Last Week’s Rank – #1, Record 3-0)

Every team is allowed one schedule change a season and Black Betty punched their card in week four against the 2nd ranked Spike Hill. It’s likely that Betty knew they only needed to wait two more months before Captain Mo is teaching white tourists how to Scuba Dive off the coast of a third world country. It would have been exciting to watch these two teams battle it out for top ranking this past weekend but it will be more interesting toward the end of the season when playoff positioning will likely be on the line.

2. Spike Hill (Last Week’s Rank – #2, Record 3-0)

Bad News – they didn’t play this weekend. Good News – OMalley added 16 more all-stars to the team.

3. R Bar (Last Week’s Rank – #4, Record 2-1)

R Bar also didn’t play but they moved up thanks to Kilo Bravo beating Turkey’s Nest and putting a loss on one of the few remaining undefeated teams. R Bar gets the nod over the other 1 loss teams because it seems like everyone has beat each other and they are still the champs.  R Bar beat Kilo, Kilo Beat Yetis, Yetis beat R Bar, Kilo beat Turkey’s Nest, etc….  However, this is the last time we will lean on their 2015 title to help R Bar’s rank. From here on out, it’s “what have you done lately” and since they are playing Turkey’s Nest we can see them in action against another top ranked team.

4. Kilo Bravo (Last Week’s Rank – #5, Record 3-1)

Think back to week one…. Kilo Bravo almost made a huge comeback to beat R Bar. They only lost to R Bar by 2. Since then, they have been crushing anyone that gets in their way. They are averaging almost 25 runs a game while holding opponents to 12.5. They have a 30 run lead for most Runs Scored after just 4 weeks. They are a dominate team and if they completed that comeback against R Bar, there is no doubt they would be the top ranked team right now.

5. Clemerica (Last Week’s Rank – #6, Record 3-1)

Clems keeps answering the challenge. They have run off three straight wins since a week one loss and they are winning these games with key players not in the line-up. We are curious to see how Markow adjusts to playing right field upon his return. You can’t shake up this line up now – right?

6. Turkey’s Nest (Last Week’s Rank – #3, Record 3-1)

They got beat up by Kilo this week after a feel-good win the weekend before when they called up classic Nesters to fill in for some missing starters. Was the Kilo game just a down weekend or did we get a better understanding of Turkey’s Nest real rank in the league?  We won’t have to wait long for that question to be answered because they play R Bar this weekend.

7. Bedford Yetis (Last Week’s Rank – #8, Record 3-1)

They jumped back to their early season winning ways with a scrappy win over AT….. And when we say “scrappy” we can also say things like “sloppy” or “interesting”.

8. St. Anselm (Last Week’s Rank – #9, Record 2-2)

They completed an epic comeback against RSC this past weekend after being down 10-0 halfway through the game. This week they face a Black Betty team that they beat twice last season. Is it payback time for Betty or is time for St. Anselm to move up past this middle-of-the-pack ranking they have had all season?

9. The Gutter 86ers (Last Week’s Rank – #7, Record 2-2)

The 86er offense has been slow out of the gates. Of all teams that have played 4 games, they have the fewest runs scored and have been held to 5 runs in a game twice this season. They have the offensive talent to easily be averaging double digit runs per game but until that happens the 86ers will hover around 500 all season.

10. Brooklyn Loggers (Last Week’s Rank – #10, Record 2-2)

Back to Back wins against Three Kings and Gibson have the Loggers at 500 and feeling good about themselves…. Unfortunately for them, Kilo is up next.

11. Three Kings (Last Week’s Rank – #11, Record 1-2)

Probably a good time for an off week… Pre-season is over for the Three Kings. It’s time for them to start playing the way we expect them to play. They have the Yetis next so a win can get them back up the rankings.

12. Soft Spot Runaways (Last Week’s Rank – #14, Record 1-3)

The Runaways were knocking on the door of their first win a few times this season and finally kicked in the door against the Teachers. They face an offensively challenged 86ers this weekend so an upset could be in the making if the Runaways score their average 11 runs a game.

13. AT All-Stars (Last Week’s Rank – #12, Record 1-3)

Lost three in a row… Will the struggles continue this week against Gibson?

14. Turkey’s Nest Teachers (Last Week’s Rank – #13, Record 1-3)

Spike Hill, Clems and R Bar are the next three games for TNT… ouch….

15. Gibson (Last Week’s Rank – #15, Record 0-4)

Gibson plays AT All-stars this weekend and looks to grab their first win of the season before a tough string of games that include Three Kings, Turkey’s Nest and Black Betty.

16. Roebling Sports Club (Last Week’s Rank – #16, Record 0-4)

Still the Best Wings in Williamsburg…. But this weekend, those wings came with a side of heartbreak.
