Pre-Season Wrap-up Report: Godsy North

Thu, Mar 31, 2016

The Godsy North looks familiar. Even with the random drawing of teams, Black Betty, the 86ers and Roebling Sports Club just couldn’t quit each other. All three are back at it again after spending 2015 in the same division. This year they are joined by 2015 playoff Cinderella team Turkey’s Teachers to fill out the foursome.

Black Betty

Black Betty finished in 1st place in their group last season (2 seed in the Godsy Division) but it wasn’t easy for them. They had to sweep a double header in the last weekend of the season to finish on top of the 86ers (who shared the same record with them but lost out on tie breakers). Betty went on to make it to their 10th consecutive finals appearance with wins over RSC, Bedford and 86ers before losing to 2015 champion R Bar. Manager Holland Cowger continues leading the Bettys in 2016 and has brought on some fresh young talent to help keep the proud Black Betty tradition alive and well. (Note – for Black Betty, “young talent” is anyone below the age of 37)

Players Lost: Super Dave (Signed by AT) and Steve Peralta (Signed by Kilo Bravo)

Key Additions: Julio Angel and Whitney Avose

Player to watch: Big free agent acquisition Julio Angel took the 2015 WSL fall league by storm with a combination of solid defense and home run power that helped his team win a championship. His addition will help on the field to offset the losses of Super Dave and Peralta while his bat will fit in nicely with the deep threat power of Mike Camarra, Dave Pretto and Jake Levine.

Pre-season Power Rankings: #2

2016 prediction: In a balanced Godsy Division wins won’t come easy but Black Betty continues to overcome obstacles year after year so it’s hard to bet against them. We are predicting a first place finish in Godsy North but expect the 86ers to make them work until the last game of the season to secure first place.

Gutter 86ers

After several years as a sub-500 team, the 86ers had an incredibly successful season in 2015 and made it to the quarter finals before losing a heartbreaker to Black Betty 2-1 on a walk-off blooper over the 2nd baseman’s head in the 10th inning. Many people are asking if the 2015 season was a fluke but the WSL editorial team thinks the 86ers are legit and it wasn’t an accident that they came within one run of the finals last year. They are still managed by Al Buttah so their vocab is bananas and the influx of talent in 2015 is committed to making the 86ers a top team in 2016. They are also welcoming back fan favorite Mallory (aka MalVP) who is back to 100% after getting into a fight with a car at the end of last season. She is a game changer and everyone is happy to see her back in action.

Players Lost: Mike Q (Signed by Kilo Bravo)

Key Additions: Talia Fromm (filled in last year for 86ers) and Matt Gleason (Saturday league transfer from Balls Deep)

Player to watch: Dave Osborne. He covers crazy ground in the OF and his offense gets better every year. He is the engine on the 86er locomotive. But don’t only watch him on the field…. Watch him behind the tables too. He DJs at The Starliner on the 3rd Thursday of every month and regularly at Matchless… (Note: this is not a paid endorsement. This is strictly spofessional)

Pre-season Power Rankings: #6

2016 prediction: A lot of people are cheering for the 86ers to take the next step in 2016 and it would not be surprising if the 86ers finished on top of Godsy North but we are predicting they finish in second by a game (or less) and secure the 3 or 4 seed going into the playoffs. Once they are in the playoffs, they have just as good a chance as any team to emerge from the Godsy Division and compete in the finals. As we previously noted, they were one run away last year from their first finals appears in team history.

Roebling Sports Club

After several years of trying to hand off managerial duties to Mike Hogan, Mark Halling finds himself taking the helm again as manager and he has lofty expectations for this organization. When asked about 2016, Halling said “Roebling Sporting Club is going to be yuuge this year. The winning is going to be terrific. The classiest, most elegant team you’ve ever seen. Putin (Sad! Loser!) is going to be very impressed by this team.” Halling went on to predict a potential 10 or 11 win season after only having half those wins in 2015.

Players Lost: Mike Hogan (moved to LA) and Shortz (retired but still part of the organization)

Key Additions: Nothing to report at this time. Justin Humphries was appointed Director of Personnel for RSC and he has been scouting players across New York City. The organization expects big things so if Humphries doesn’t come through he might find himself losing that new director position before the season even begins.

Player(s) to watch: Clinchy…. And Dave Fioretti.

Pre-season Power Rankings: #12

2016 prediction: It’s hard for the WSL editorial team to have the same optimism as Manager Halling. They lost a key player in Mike Hogan and we haven’t seen any big free agent signings yet. Can we see a few more wins over last year? Sure… They fought hard in the playoffs and almost pulled off a huge upset but doubling the number of wins feels like a reach at this point. Maybe Humphries pulls a few rabbits out of a hat or a few of RSC’s roster players have break out years but right now we are predicting RSC has the 6th seed going into the playoffs (which is still better than 2015).

Turkey’s Nest Teachers (aka TNT)

That’s right WSL… From here on out, Turkey’s Teachers shall be known as TNT because they are about to explode onto the scene and shock the league with their improved play in 2016…. At least that’s how Manager Haz Khawaja feels and he is not shy about sharing his feelings for 2016. “TNT will be competitive in every games this year…. We will put up a hell of a fight every Sunday”. TNT ended the season on a high note with a first round playoff win against top seeded Three Kings. It was probably the most exciting game to watch in the entire WSL 2015 season. We may be exaggerating but WSL editorial team members counted somewhere between 5 and 6 thousand people were watching that game by the 9th inning…. or at least that’s how it sounded when the final out was made and TNT secured the greatest playoff upset in WSL history. They lost in the next round to the 86ers but they went down as the 2015 WSL Cinderella story that people will remember for a long time.

Players Lost: None

Key Additions: Tobey Keller, Ronnie Ortiz and Elvis Sanchez.

Player to watch: Newly acquired outfielder Tobey Keller is someone to keep an eye on as the season progresses. He will likely bat 4th and be surrounded by TNT’s other two free agents Ortiz and Sanchez. When you add three new players and they bat 3-4-5, its likely your team is ready for a transformation.

Pre-season Power Rankings: #15

2016 prediction: There are so many unknowns with TNT right now so it’s hard to know for sure what to expect. They could flirt with a 500 record or end up in the same place as 2015. We don’t want to put too much weight on the first game of the season but they play RSC and that game might help us understand a lot about both of those teams.
