Message from the Commish – Opening Day – Possible Delay

Tue, Mar 10, 2015

Hellooooo Players, Fans and Groupies of the WSL,

OK, got some crappy news to share.
Just got an email from the Parks Department saying this:

As our partner in delivering sports programs, we are writing to update you on the 2015 ballfield season. Due to this winter’s severe weather, preparation of the ballfields has been delayed. Despite dates indicated on your permit, no team or league is allowed to use a field prior to completion of our ballfield preparation since it is not safe and can cause damage to the field. This includes synthetic turf fields. As fields are completed and ready for play we will contact you. Do not use any field until then.

We appreciate your patience as we work to get fields safe for use as soon as possible.

With that being said, I wrote him back and asked if he had a date for when we could begin our season and he said “not yet, but soon.”

I’m hoping it really doesn’t cut into the beginning of the season. Currently our season doesn’t start until April 12th, even though our permits begin on the 5th. If it does delay the start, we’ll have to figure out how we’re still going to play our 18 games, whether this means the season will run long and into the fall league season, or we do some double header weekends, OR, if we use our current “make up week” as an actual week.

But, what this does mean is the WSL cannot sanction any Spring Training until the parks are officially open. But if there’s no snow on the field and peeps want to go down and do pick up, that’s up to you, but the WSL can’t run anything as we don’t want to get in trouble in case the Parks Dept asks. If people are going to do pickup, it has nothing to do with us. Please keep in mind though, we don’t want to destroy the fields too much (even though in reality we’re only out there 1 day a week).

The instant I get any news, I’ll share it with you.
