Playoffs 1st Round – Preview

Thu, Sep 5, 2013

It’s here! The 2013 WSL Playoffs! We made it, some in better shape than others, but nonetheless we are all participants.  There are always some league-wide gripes about all the teams making the playoffs…but we see the point. But how else would we be able to see O’Malley in tears if The Gibson beats them. Or how else can we see Al Buttah‘s 86’ers continue ripping the league a new one with their season-ending win streak? Turkey’s Nest vs. Good Co & Soft Spot vs. Black Betty….How else would we get these high caliber 1st round match-ups? And best part is…everyone gets to play…for now. It’s win or go home time!

For the 1% of you that don’t feel like reading the preview, check out WSL premiere Umpire Sam, as he predicts the outcome of EVERY GAME.

Good luck to everyone in the chase for the Joe “Fashion” Fiorentino Williamsburg Softball League Championship Trophy!

Field #1: Soft Spot @ Black Betty (GBlack)

The defending Champs help kick off the tournament against the Yetis, in a game set to be an insta-classic. Even with a strong 11-7 record, the Betty’s have had an uneven year to their usual lofty standards. Although they’ve managed some great moments this season (15-14 win vs. Spike Hill), they’ve also had some low lights (15-1 loss against Good Co aka “Cesar’s Ego Boost”). The last time The Yetis were under .500 for the season, it was illegal for Baby Boy to drink (not that it stopped him), Pizza was wearing RBar blue and Winston was only sorta old. Point being, it’s been a long time.  And like Black Betty, they have also lost their last 3 of 4 to close out the season.

Do these two teams have another great battle for us? Will the Strongest Sixth Seed ever make it to the 2nd Round in their quest for ring #7? Or can the Yetis stomp and crush BB for the first time this season when it matters most? Will Camarra’s new “ Kill Bigfoot” workout regimen be the difference? The answers lay in the perfectly manicured Mike V. lines……

Field #2: duckduck @ Brooklyn Bowl (Shortz)

You’re doing that wrong. EVERYTHING wrong.

Despite the massive differences in records, this should be one of the more closely matched up games. Neither team swept the other in the regular season, and each game was won in a walk off. Since we both can’t win in a walk off this time (or can we?) It’ll be tres exciting to see how this game plays out.

Duckduck is raising the bar on our usual laid-back approach to game prepping with a barrage of off-the-clock secret activities (mostly just drinking) whereas the Bowlers plan to eat their faces off at Brooklyn Bowl to move up a weight class for this upcoming game. Think I’m lying? Come out early and find out.

Field #1: Gibson @ Spike Hill (Shortz)

Hey, it could happen

Marking the 3rd year of this annual tradition, the First Seed/Last Seed games will be played by Gibson and Spike Hill. As the league vigorously examines (only) Spike Hill’s roster with a fine-toothed comb, Gambo n’ Friends will be prepping for by pre-gaming at The Gibson while they put the finishing touches on their post-game concession speech. Not so fast, Gibbers; I am personally rooting for you. I have a feeling you’ll go out there and surprise us all. Where that bracket betting sheet at?

Field #2: Turkey’s Teachers @ AT AllStars (GBlack)

Coffee Bong for everyone!

The Allstars are one of the teams that had their best year in their team’s history. While the North Division title eluded them, AT had a strong and telling season. Winning eight games to start off 2013 was met with a reality check when inter-league play started. Losing three in a row to the league’s best sucked ass, but it was a great measuring stick. Primed with veteran pitching and strong defense, the ATers look to set the school on fire and charge into the 2nd round. Standing in their way are The Teacher’s, who have been blah, yet interesting all season. Much like 2nd Chance’s season strategy, manager Haz likes to spread out the wins early and then make like an exciting horse race and come on strong in the end. TNT has been downright explosive down the stretch, winning their last 3 of 4 and averaging 22 runs in those victories. Maybe they spiked their faculty coffee with amphetamines or something.  I say drug test the Teachers!  These teams meet for the 1st time this season, so who the hell knows what’s going to happen.

Field #1: Loggers @ RBar (GBlack)

Sporting the league’s 2nd best record of 15-3, owning the South Divisional title, and sweeping the Reigning champs and Spike Hill already have The Bums as the perennial favorites to go all the way.  Want more Rbar, greatness? Okay,  they swept inter-league and beat a very strong willed 3 Kings team twice. Seems like there is no Achilles heel. But long long long time WSL resident and Logger’s Manager Brenner doesn’t just look like Yoda, he is the league’s Yoda! Although his team has mightily underperformed this season with the second lowest win total in the league, they believe in their leader/guru. Brenner’s master plan: Wear Pink and Orange and the victory shall be theirs. Rbar has lost to Pete’s twice and Good Co once. Perhaps its the fancy feeling pink makes you feel or the irritating sight of orange but stats back it up, Rbar cannot win when staring at those colors.  Seems like a far fetch idea from a far fetch type of dude, but sadly it might their only chance. But fuck it… Go get them LOGGGGGGEERRRRRRS!!!!!

Field #2: 2nd Chance @ Pete’s (Shortz)

Not Five Championships…Five Games

AThese two teams haven’t faced off since last year’s inter-league, which Pete’s dominated in the later innings, but like I said, these are two very different teams this year.

They may have gained confidence in beating Black Betty in week 20, but now are down a Kirby going into the playoffs. Crestfallen teammates, Jake and JJ are currently holding auditions to replace the third member of their Trifecta of Awesome, even though Coach Sam believes he’s already filled the position.

Second Chance got their second wind in the latter end of the season, knocking off seasoned teams left and right. I saw them play some pick-up softball on the day of their fearless leader’s nuptials, and they were looking pretty dope. Soda even took a few swings with one arm. Mayor Buttah is still reeling from being robbed of his potential home run by his own Dad. Did I just recap your wedding in my preview? #twobirdswithonestome

Field #1: Clemerica @ 3 Kings (GBlack)

Bring it!

This is my favorite game of the 1st round! Entering the league in the same year, both are having their best seasons in franchise history and have had their “league laughing stock card” revoked.  Long gone are the days of having only 11 am games all season long. Clemerica fell short of their 10th victory but still posed impressive wins vs. Turkey’s Nest. Also swept the duckduck back into their pond scum and even beat the Tattooed Terrors back in  Week 9. 1st year Manager and admitted GBlack-Supporter Stash McNeils has the stench of success all over him. He took the reins, cleaned house a little, and created a 10-win team. They can win with the long ball or get in a boom box trance and play some defense. The Majestic ones are formidable. Will The Battleship bombard 3K with cannon ball-like hits? Will finally beating the Betty in the season finale propel the 3 Kings through the tournament til the end? It’s The Stash vs. The Beard, Tats vs. BBQ , Braun vs Belly!

Field #2: Turkey’s Nest @ Good Co (Shortz)

You gobble like a girl!

These two squads last met in week 18…2012…where the Pink Ladies edged out the deep V-necks for the 3rd seed in the playoffs. What a difference a year makes as they face off in the 7th and 10th seeds. Plagued by injuries and poor attendance, the Nesters have had one weird season. Could their luck turn around? I’m not sure since I lapsed on the renewal of my wizard license, but I do know that while canoeing on a glistening lake last weekend with Wally & Stacy, they eluded that “Turkey Season” starts this Sunday.

-The New Additions

Speaking of us…we held a secret fancy dinner party to celebrate our favorite people…ourselves. We’re hoping to have even more “New Additions” to the website staff next year! The bigger the party, the bigger the steak!
