Week 20- Preview

Thu, Aug 15, 2013

Is the last official week of the regular season…thank GOD…its been very hard to make all you people sound interesting and funny for this long. While there will be some makeup games played next week, this Sunday looks to be last licks for quite a few teams so play hard, drink hard, and bask as much as you can in the fading glory of summer. While they don’t get a fancy poster this week, be sure to bring your lawn chairs out to the blacktop Best of 3 Finals starting at 10am, featuring none other than the All Stars of Brooklyn Athletic Club. (unless of course you’re the Loggers or Good Co, then you should probably be paying attention to your own game). Let’s make this one count, folks!

Field #1: Loggers vs. Good Co. (Shortz)

Hey…someone could come watch our game too…

The Loggers lost in the narrowest of margins to the Pink Ladies in week 3, despite an All-Star effort from Million Dollar Baby Jen 10. In what makes the final game for both teams, perhaps the WSL gods will throw the Loggers a bone so they can close out their regular season with the taste of sweet victory. Will Mr. Mike Hughes get his surname back? Or will his new roommate outshine him like she does with most of the league? Enjoy the spacious outfield in the only 10 am slot!

Field #1: 2nd Chanse vs. Gibson (GBlack)

I will literally pee my pants if Gibson pulls this off

Someone .. Anyone… extend the season!!!  Because Mayor Al Buttah and the 86er’s have it figured out. Al’s season-long strategy of only winning two of the his team’s first 13 games, including a 7-game losing streak, has worked.  He has lulled us all into thinking “Hey, The Saloon is an easy match-up.” Well, The Mayor and his crew say “Suck It, WSL” because 2nd Chance is on a two game winning streak after dispatching BK Bowl and duckduck. They look to ride this momentum and rise in the seeding for a more favorable match-up.  The Gibson, ohhhhhhh Gibson, how I root for you.  This is your last chance for victory, and more importantly your last chance to inspire fear into the #1 seed before you face them in the playoffs.  So let’s do this shit!!!

Field #2: Soft Spot vs. Turkey’s Teachers (Shortz)

When they last met, The Teachers lost to the Yetis by 3 to the third power plus 1, but an abrupt change in the schedule has stripped the Yetis of a proper lineup this week, which could result in a good ol’ fashioned protest to raise funds for Toolan’s changed plane ticket.

But since the schedule looks to be locked down for this week, this poor fortune could be what the Teachers need to bump up a seed (along with additional varying factors, such as other teams’ performance and my mood). Good things happen when Winnie’s in the lineup however, so it’ll be very interesting how this game plays out.

Field #1: Clemerica vs. 2nd Chance (Shortz)

Do i have something on my face?

When these two clubs faced off in week 16, a wicked long stare down between Andre and Stryker nearly caused the 2nd Chance to mount one of the greatest comebacks of the season (with the exception of their 7-run comeback last week- jerks). Both these teams are twin billed this weekend, so as The Saloon are winding down from their hopefully spirit lifting game against Gibson, Clem’s better be just warming up to face the might Spike Hill next. The Chancers are getting their bats going as of late, so put down your BBQ and look out Battleship- they’ll hit it where you ain’t.

Field #2: RBar vs. 3 Kings (GBlack)

3K Revenge!

It is safe to say that The Rbar Bums have been the best team during the regular season? They have finally combined offense and defense. They have the swagger that comes with winning 12 out of their last 13 games, and victories over The Champs (twice), a sweep of the North and not losing since mid May. Bum’s pitcher Teddy has had an incredible year on the mound and is a CY Young candidate (just kidding, there is no pitching award, its fucking softball). The Big Blue Machine is also leading the league in scoring, so they are firing on all pistons. They will need their all-around game this Sunday when they face a very inspired 3 Kings team. The Tattooed Terrors are having their best season in franchise history and look to achieve a double digit win 2013 campaign.  3K also looks to avenge a very close loss to Rbar back in Week 3.

We got our hands on some of the revenge tunes that will be blaring out of the Majestic One’s Boom Box:

Your Time Is Gonna ComeLed Zeppelin

Damn You Damn Everyone – Foo Fighters

You And Whose Army? Radiohead

Something Against You – The Pixies

Never Again- Kelly Clarkson <—- Nick Tomeo requested this one

Will Rbar get that 15th win and put pressure on Spike Hill to win all their remaining games? Is Stash Manager of the Year?  Let the home runs fly in this one and see who is left standing!

Field #1: Clemerica vs. Spike Hill (GBlack)

Very similar to 3 Kings, Clemerica entered the league in the same expansion year, and are having their big breakout season. And continuing with the similarities, they are also looking for their first 10-win season. The Battleship will have to restock their cannonballs for this one and look to make Spike Hill pay for their Week 3 beat down (7-21 Loss). Breezey, even though still sidelined, will be on board to administer the good ol’ “beard slap” to O’Malley and the Spike Hillians. After securing their North Crown last week with a victory vs. AT, Spike Hill is in a two team race for the #1 over all seed with RBar. With 3 games remaining vs. some pretty healthy rivals, they have their work cut out for them.

Will Clemerica be able to hold off Spike Hill and shock the WSL on the last week of the season? With a full squad, can Spike Hill run the table on Sunday and emerge at the #1 seed? Let’s play 9 and find out.

Field #2: duckduck vs. Brooklyn Bowl (Shortz)

Ok, Now you’ve done it. RELEASE THE DUCK FACE!

In our last meeting with Brooklyn Bowl, duckduck was poised to lose to the Bowlers until Mike Hogan saved the day in the bottom of the 9th with a 3-run walk-off homer. Now Brooklyn Bowl is sitting pretty in 3rd place in the North, whereas duckduck is almost tied with Turkey’s Nest for most bizarre season ever. Although I’ll be absent from this game, I can tell you that we need a win worse than A-Rod needs his PEDs case dropped. So my advice to my teams, please capitalize on the Bowlers team slogan, “You never know…”

Field #1: Black Betty vs. Pete’s (Shortz)

Let’s see who’s the crazy one and who’s really chosen

With 2 games remaining for the Champs and one left for the Fireball Candy-folk, this could be a seed-deciding barn burner. When these two teams last played, new manager Benny Ballgame was just getting his WSL sea legs, but throughout the season has turned the Betty back into a well-oiled machine. Will “Orange be the new Black” for the second time this year? What better plans do you have at 6pm on a Sunday?

Field #2: Spike Hill vs. Brooklyn Bowl (GBlack)

Let’s Roll it, Bowlers.

Even if they sink the battleship in their 4pm match-up, Spike Hill is still playing for that coveted #1 seed, so beware Bowlers. Spike Hill should have their full militia of players for this one and look to redo what they did to Pete and crew back in Week 16 (12-9 Win). The Bowlers have licked their wounds and god knows what else after being dismantled and manhandled last week by the hands of AT. BK Bowl cannot rise in the seeding, which is currently at #4 , but they can drop, so expect a better effort from God-sy and crew.  Will the valiant return of O’Malley fill Spike hill with enough motivation (or fear of his Irish wrath) to be #1? Can The Bowlers help out Rbar’s play-off picture?

Groundskeeper Mike

The fields of McCarren Park don’t just come manicured and ready for battle. There’s a painstaking process to its upkeep. This video unlocks the inner workings of WSL’s “Groundskeeper Mike” and his brave, groundskeeping crew.

Fire it up! See you out there.
