Week 2- Preview

Thu, Apr 11, 2013

So Mother Nature played a nasty trick on us this week, saving gorgeous mid-70 degree weather for the boring work week instead of blessing us with it on Sunday…what a bitch! Looks like another breezy, chilling game day this weekend. We will continue to shake off the winter rust during week 2 while our precious (and vital) livers acclimate to the binge drinking that will ensue throughout the spring and summer. We have some solid and intriguing match-ups this week, so let’s get to it!

11am

Consider yourselves warned

Field #1: Loggers vs. 3 Kings (Shortz)

Both teams were on the losing end last week, after some hard fought games. Perhaps ”Stash” Mcnelis was not quite finished suckling his new babes? Perhaps the Loggers are having yet another rebuilding year? Of course it’s way too early in the season to tell, but I sincerely hope this game contains as many guillotines, gallows, electric chairs, fake blood, boa constrictors and baby dolls, as advertised on the 3 Kings’ team page. (Editor’s note: Careful Loggers, your league non-presence in the wake of losing characters such as D-Lo, Cesar, El-train is bringing you dangerously close to Lumberjack puns).

P.S. Does Brooklyn Ale House still have that bagel spread on Sundays for post- game munching? Mama’s hungry.

Buttah on a roll!

Field #2: 2nd Chance vs. Brooklyn Bowl (GBlack)

Brooklyn Bowl will continue its familiarization with the North Division when they take on the 86’ers. Al Buttah’s troops didn’t fair too well in their Week 1 match up, scoring only a single run against the tyranny of Spike Hill. I suggest The Mayor takes his team to Brooklyn Bowl on Saturday evening to envision Jay Silver, Mike Olin and crew as bowling pins and knock them down all night long, (nothing like a little Pat Riley’esque motivation). As for the Bowlers pre-game prep, they’ll just replay their Opening Day victory vs. the Turkey’s Nest in their heads.

*A special Get Well Soon shout-out to one of the new members of Second Chance, Mike Q, who injured his ankle after getting pulverized by a cab on Wednesday. Heal up fast and hope you got the plate number!*

1pm

the butts of summer

Field #1: Reel to Reel vs. Turkey’s Nest (Shortz)

The Reelers were 0-2 in the regular season against the Turkey’s Nest, only to knock them out in the post-season (see last week’s preview for video attachment). I’ve heard very little chatter from the Nest about their season opening loss (since I am not on their team’s email thread), but as for my squad, we have regrouped since last week’s demise and are ready to WHOOP. DAT. ASS.

We’ll see if The Boys of Summer still wish to implement their Dodgeball rules, but fair warning, Nesters- last time one of yours hit one of ours (me, specifically…in the head) on the field with a softball, we won. So by all means, chuck away!

Field #2: Clemerica @ Gibson (Gblack)

Hmm..what’s that on the menu?

Riot police had to be called over to Clems to calm the celebration after their huge walk-off win over R2R last Sunday. In lieu of tear gas to settle the volatile jubilation, Breezy smoked out the masses with delicious BBQ-ed brisket. Week 1 marked what is probably the biggest victory in the Clemerica franchise to date, showing that they can compete with those Yankees up North. The Gibson gave forth a solid effort against the Allstars in the opener and showed they are capable of scoring and of keeping things close from the get-go. Will there be a let down vs. the Gibson after an impressive North Division debut? Breezy and his minions better be ready for a cranky Gibson, thirsting for their 1st win of 2013.

3pm

Field #1: Black Betty vs. Good Company (Shortz)

Silly Mike V…we all know you can’t read or write

Field 1 marks the semi-final rematch between these two clubs. Side note: I remember during last year’s Championship, discussing with Joe Fashion that we should assemble our teams to play a Chumpionship on the other field, go delusional and take the trophy for our match, followed by both teams running away to Tijuana. Not a well thought out plan, but nonetheless, a nice memory.

We shall see if the Betty dynasty can bounce back from last week’s upset or if Wally (now back from Tulum) can lead the Pinks to their 2nd victory of the season. Oh, and if we don’t get highlights from this game, the recap will be nothing more than a video of Holland playing guitar in the middle of the field, sporting daisy dukes and a mullet (Yes, I have such footage).

These hats are selling like hot cakes. BUY YOURS NOW!

Field#2: AT All Stars @ Spike Hill (GBlack)

What can we say to lessen AT’s likeability and increase Spike HIll’s?

“Ummm…… hmmmmm….this is a hard one….” – Leo Otero of Spike Hill

How about Gerald and O’Malley are now “BFF’s” and are shacking up together, and also that Morgan will pole dance on the dugout post in between innings?  I’d show up to this one if I were you! High on their 1st week win, 3B anchor Daniel “DNasty” Chaupis and the rest of the Allstars look to make a statement early in the season; they have never beaten Spike Hill, going 0-2 in 2012. But Coach O’Malley, who is nursing a calf injury (he is mortal after all- who knew!?) will have a more complete squad to throw against the Drunk Tank Drinkers than he did in Week 1.

5pm

Field#1: R Bar @ Turkey’s Teachers (GBlack)

In this late day match up, hopefully TNT will be taking out their red pens to correct RBar’s egos after they tallied sixteen runs and belted three homers in Week 1 against Black Betty. I’m sure they will be trying to continue their bat-bashing ways vs. the Turkey Nest Higher Educators. Obviously the Teacher’s prevailed last week against the Loggers, (since Haz holds the answer sheet to everything) so lets see if they can make the grade! And watch out for the female players on Teacher’s, they had a fantastic debut! Keep it up, ladies!

Field #2: Soft Spot Yetis vs. Pete’s Candy Store (Shortz)

RAWR! CANDY! NOM NOM

Pete’s championship run ended when they met Soft Spot last, so methinks they’ll be out for blood. Or booze. Probably both.

New-ish-ly (yep- that’s a word) hitched Zak proved last week that he has gotten the honeymoons out of his system by leading the Yetis to victory and perhaps will snag a second W this Sunday. A recovering Pizza (whose entire spine was ripped out by wolves last season) should be back on the mound. But por favor Yetis, don’t make him work too hard; we prefer a healthy Pizza. Meanwhile, Sam, “the fucking coach”, Rio will try to dig his Candyfolk out of last week’s doldrums by launching some “fireballs” to melt ‘dem Yetis.

*And in WSL fashion news, the Yetis have new, grammatically correct shirts procured by the beautifully, beautiful April Hartstein (Thanks for the free beer, April).*

 CONTEST TIME!!!

Since this game is being played in the friendly confines of Field #1, let’s play a game within the game…

 1. Guess how many HR’s Rbar will hit in this game, If you guess correctly, I (Gerald) will buy you two Turkey Nest beers the following week.

Please make your guesses on the comment section on FB under the preview post. The first person with the right answer wins!

GOOD LUCK TEAMS!
