2012 WSL Championship Weekend – Recap

Thu, Oct 4, 2012

#6 for the Betties!

Congrats to our 2012 Champions Black Betty on their 6th F’ing Championship!

I want to start by giving a special thanks to those of you who stepped up this weekend and helped out with our end of season party and send off for Godsy! Breeze your Clems crew BBQ was off the hook! Morgan your video compilation was incredible and we really appreciated the last minute projector, Pat! Jake, fantastic smooth job on the cornhole tourney where DLo & Shane took home the clinchers!! DLo & Julissa great pasta salad and rice and beans and Katie that cake speaks for itself. Godsy did a great job emceeing the festivities and Melissa’s pinatas filled with softball crap were priceless!! Everyone else…thanks for the memories! I’m kidding, I don’t remember anything either.

I think it’s safe to say…Sam is out of his mind.

On to the games!

Here’s O’Mally! “This was a tight game. Reel scored early to go up 4-0, but in the bottom of the 4th we scored 6 to go up 6-4. Reel tied it at 6, and then we went up 7-6. In the top of the 8th, Reel plated a run to tie the game. After we set down the order 1 2 3 in the top of the 9th, Leo started the bottom with a single. Mitch followed with a hit that put Leo and Mitch at 2nd and 3rd with nobody out. R2R walked Jake, and that brought up Powell with a chance to be the hero. They brought Hogan in as a 5th infielder and Powell sharply lined the ball right to him, All of our fielders froze, but I think Mike thought Leo was off the base and gunned it to Halling on the 3rd base line, who wasn’t looking.

Leo in a Thriller!

The ball dribbled into foul territory and Leo shot home to score the winner. It was far from a fitting end to a great game. Highlights included a ridiculous series of shoestring catches by Hogan, Babkow made a number of really nice scoops at 3rd, and Greg Todd snagged everything we hit to him in right. On our side, Matt was money, as were Lebron and Jake. Mitch, Powell, Kelly and Leo all made diving catches in the outfield that saved runs. Most competitive game of the year for us (RBar and the first Betty game being close seconds).”

Good Co. didn’t go down easy!

Black Betty – Good Co

I’m throwing this together based on a series of texts from Katie of RBar! The Black went up early on the pink with a solo HR by H, a sac by Steven and two run bomb by Becker, yup…you heard right, Becker came all the way back to Brooklyn to help the Betties chances this Sunday and for a little partying WSL-style. Good Co rallied back to make it 4-2, but Betty came back to finish the 6th 8-4 by the time I got there. The Pinks proved they weren’t going down without a fight and were able to knock in 3 more runs and hold the Betties, but couldn’t bring the pain in the rain and fell short by one.

After that threatening downpour scare that the treeline couldn’t even protect us from, we all wandered back out of The Nest and The Gibson to hit the fields for the big game as the clouds cleared and the sun shined down on our final two contenders.

Wait, Spike Hill is NOT going to win?? But O’Malley promised!!

So the 2011 Championship teams faced off once again on Field one! But the outcome this year was very different, the super-stacked Spike Hill goes down to Black Betty by 4 runs, and are heald to only 4 runs, (which Steve Peralta guessed Spike would score in his 2nd place bracket!!) Here’s a recap from Camarra…not funny? I beg to differ.

H makes JB$ proud taking over on the mound!

“spike hill had a great season and showed a lot to make it back to the title game, but the betties were waiting to get that trophy back!”

see… not funny. not witty. just the facts. stick with what you’re good at. for black betty it’s winning titles.

that email took 15 minutes to write ‘cause i had to change a diaper in the middle.
i’m out”

Please tell me that Sparkles still will sport that same extra-extra small jersey for 2013 and we are definitely having another Spring Training pick-up game to recruit new rookies next season.

For the party recap, just see my last preview lead in. Do I know you assholes or do I know you assholes?

Congrats to Betty!
Congrats to Bobby as the HR winner!
Congrats to Silverman on winning the bracket!
Congrats to Holland on becoming Commissioner!
Congrats to Cesar for winning the Wally and the Becker!

See you in April!! …or at 4th Down this Sunday for football. I’ll bring the Big League Chew.

– Carly

Holland’s 2Cents
Thanks to everyone who has wished me well next year with the Commissioner duties, and even to the few who said I shouldn’t have it and I suck. I welcome everyone’s opinion! We’ve got an entire off-season to plan 2013 out, but the one thing I want to say is I will try my utmost best to keep this league within the same fairness, professionalism and excitement as Godsy created. This league is his vision and I intend to keep it that way. I love this league as much as everyone, and I plan on continuing to keep it awesome and make it better and better.
I’ll be reaching out to a lot of you in the future for next season’s planning, but for now, let’s enjoy the end of this year and I’ll talk to you soon!
