Week 8 – Recap

Wed, Jun 13, 2012

Recovered? Yeah, I’m getting there, too.

11AM

JB$ back in action!!

Let’s just start this right off with the Game of the Week! JB$ was back and despite still nursing his opening day injury, the dude was respectable on the mound and just tore it up on side lines to Prince’s, “ Let’s Go Crazy.” Anyway, this was a hard fought battle…wait where have I heard that before? Reset. Seriously, this was the Game of The SEASON, so far. There was an crazy good turnout for an 11AMer, (yeah most of them were under 5 but whatever) and it didn’t disappoint. SH went up by 7 in the first and we all muttered, “uhhh-ohhhh.” But then Betty came right back to go up  9-7. SH tied it 9-9  at some point and it stayed that way until the bottom of the ninth where JB walked two guys with a man on third, the second one (Finn) in front on Annie on 4 straight balls, which means a walk + 1 to plate the winning run in the 9th. OUCH!

Slappy watches his clincher go yard.

On Field one, The Bums and Reel 2 Reel were tied 1-1 all freakin’ day, but in the bottom of the 6th R2R Speedster Lauck drove a ball into the gap to circle the bases and a couple of hits later they were up 3-1 going into the bottom of the 8th. Here Bobby Knapp stepped up to the plate and just crushed the S#!T out of the ball. R2R baller, The Hawk, commented post game on Slappy’s hit. “Petemo could have made a play on that ball if he had started out 50 ft deeper, ran faster and could jump over the fence into the Spike Hill dugout. You know, like a superhero….” RBar couldn’t score again and the Reelers stacked on 4 insurance runs with the bottom of their line-up to end the Bum’s 3 game winning streak.

1PM

Yup. They even have personalized cleats.

We stayed put on field one in anticipation for some Mendoza/Turkey’s antics and they got them cooking right away when the Home Run Leader blasted a no-doubter at his very first at bat! He crossed the plate into a storm of confetti shot from Dan’s cannon. Then Godsy answered right back with a four-bagger of his own and that’s pretty much how the rest of the day played out for these two. And just like that, Shafer is shelling out 160 bucks, damning his singles, and packing the confetti rockets away for another season.

Good Co. & Soft Spot were really competing for attention with the DozaNestFest in full swing on field one so Melissa gets the recap of the week spot. “Sun’s out, Guns out!  Good Co came out guns blazing against Soft Spot, who were down a few key players.  When our necks weren’t craning to see the glitter bombs going off in Field 1, or we weren’t ducking out of the way of Godsy & Louis bombs, the Pinks rode the hit carousel. David Herman played a great SS all over the left and was gunning Soft Spotters out from deep.  The Pink ladies organized their own carousel, every one getting in legit hits when it counted.  Mike V.’s homers extinguished the Yetis sparks of hope for a win – the final score was 12-6.  ON to the BBQ!” Well only for Good Co, who like to be the first ladies to the ball. The rest of us stuck around for the 3PM play.

3PM

The El Train rolled back into the park in Gibson gear and we still got beat by a ton of runs. But we actually scored a few of our own this time, too! The Teachers out powered the Gibson with HR’s for Shane, Tristan, Kevin & Efram which staked Matty Mudd to an early lead that he would not relinquish.

The Loggers are back on top this week defeating the 3 Kings and I kid you not when I tell you that Jen-10 copied and pasted the recap via text message from Brenner last night. Ha! Top that! So here, check it out:

Okay moving along to the 5PM games it’s, Hey! Wait a minute…

5PM

2nd Chance @ Petes??? So they have a BBQ from 5-8 during their 5-7 scheduled game? Yup, sounds like Pete’s. So we’ll just use this spot to recap our arrival to the party. A ton of us started to head right over after finishing playing or watching the 3PM dudes. It was just like old times pushing our way through the Mexican Birthday fiestas along the handball courts and then cutting off the track runners before parading down Lorimer. We arrived at the The Candy Store to find Good Co pretty much starting to clap themselves out already at 5:05. We started right in with the shots and the rest is a blur of beers, burgers, beards and Sparkles.

In the other 5PM slot The Allstars got back to basics vs. The Battleship by displaying great plate patience and solid defense and also tacking on a few for the HR Leaderboard! Behind steady veteran pitching from Jimmy Two Strikes, AT’s offense woke-up with dingers from Ersin (The Turkish Tornado), DJ, Nasty Nate & Gerald. Shout-out to the Lady Stars who put forth great effort this Sunday to help their team come out on top!

Jakey Poo, Godsy, The Cowboy and the dead guy from "Weekend at Bernie's"

Seriously, thanks to Pete’s for one hell of a good time last weekend!!! With that turnout we must have raised a good penny for the league’s extra costs this season, all the while spending some good quality time with one another….that none of us remember. But many pictures were taken from the party and if you haven’t had a chance to see them, you can view them on our WSL FB page.

One last thing! Did you know that our Jakey-Poo is famous?? I know it was raining last night but you can just make him out here on the Big Screen in front of Penn Station. All of NYC is rooting for him to get some home runs!!

xo

Holland’s 2 Cents:

OK! Scores, standings and Playoff Brackets are now updated for Week 8. Still waiting for the HR’s to be sent over to Cesar so he can get me the list.
