Week 7 – Recap

Wed, Jun 6, 2012

The 11AM Ballers set the bar high for the rest of the league with two edge-of-your seat-openers for the week. Rain threatened the 2nd half of the day, but we fought it out and got a couple more nail biters in, with only a slight midday delay. We’ll leave out everything that ensued in the post game gatherings at The Gibson…you’re welcome.

The Game Winning Grand Slammer, Andrew!

11AM

Black Betty and Pete’s got the excitement rolling in a defensive duel that finally reached the top of the 9th 6-6 with PCS runners on 2nd & 3rd. This is where Betty elected to walk Pete’s #5 hitter and all hell broke lose. In the midst of the frenzy, Andrew Prayzner stepped to the dish and smashed out a grand slam. Betty threatened a comeback in the bottom of the inning, plating two before running out of outs. Post game consisted of Pete’s hopeful talks of turning around their franchise over a couple of styrofoam foamies.

Sam Turner hits game winner! Mike V gets hernia!

Not to be outdone the Northside had a close one going of their own in the bottom of the 9th. I have no idea how or why, but all I know is I turned around just in time to see the flash of Sam Turner roadrunnering around the bases of field one and into a sea of pink for a walk-off HR over the 3 Kings! Good Co wins their 2nd straight and Wally gets a pleasant surprise from Holland.

1PM

Wally's Smile...Captured and Framed...Perfectly!

R2R took an early 3-0 lead over 2nd Chance, but then in the top of the 2nd inning, the 86ers exploded with a bunch of hits to go up by 6. The Reelers answered right back to end the inning tied 9UP. The next few innings went back and forth with each team matching the other hit for hit and play for play in the field, but by the 7th, Second Chance took a 16-11 lead. R2R closed the gap by adding a run in the bottom of the inning as the rains came. After the brief delay, both teams charged back out to a scoreless 8th. We all thought this was going to be the day for the 86ers, but R2R came out guns blazing for their last licks. The last man in the order smoked a line drive up the middle and the momentum shifted. R2R hit hard liner after hard liner until they tied up the score 16-16, and then Andrew drove in the winning run with a sac fly to center to end the game in walk off fashion! Lots of shout-outs! Dave “Barndog” Babkow led the team going 5 for 5 with 5 Runs scored, and 3 RBI’s. Followed up by “Ope” going 4 for 5 and an important sac in the bottom of the 9th. Shortz went 4 for 4 with a walk leading the bottom of the order, “The Hawk”  drove in 5 RBI’s on a 4 for 5 day. The Game ball is being flown out to long time barefoot-baller Greg Wilson who moved to some place by a muddy lake, go figure. His misunderstood shouts of humor from the bench will surely be missed.

Sparkles wins a one spot from Leo thanks to D-Lo's bomb.

Under the Battleship Clemerica banner on Field one, RBar was trailing in the 3rd when DLo stepped up to bat. Leo and Mitchy Sparkles from Spike Hill decided to place a bet on whether she could get a hit or not. DLo answered with a bomb to get her first entry on the Home Run leaderboard and make it a tie game. Clems rallied right back with a big 4th inning and then Bobby Knapp hit a two run homer to close in 8-5. Bum Teddy Browne smashed a 3 run dinger in the 7th to finally give RBar the lead, but those Clemericans just wouldn’t go away and tied it up again in the 8th, but the Bums finished them off in the bottom of the inning.

This marks the point of the day where we all wanted to strangle Joel.

Okay, moving on….

Al, of the Loggers, shows off their new duds!

3PM

Loggers strutted in with really cool new uniforms and looked pretty dapper in their loss to the Soft Spot Yeti’s.

The Spike Hill / Gibson game played out pretty much exactly how you thought it would. My post game chat with O’Malley is more entertaining.

5PM

Mendoza closes the gap in the South with a huge win over the the Turkey’s Teachers in the game of the week! We got a special recap spot from the Commish, you gotta read it in his voice for full effect! “The Teachers started the game by hitting five balls so far over the left fielder that I was convinced they were using a rolled bat and prolly doin’ tons of steroids and viagra.  ‘Doza battled back and ended up starting the ninth with a 5 run lead and were informed that they’d be fine…as long as they didn’t give up a grand slam and some cheap hits. So then Shane from the Teachers promptly went ahead and hit a GD grand slam and then they dropped a couple a bloopers in and all of a sudden had two on, one out, and only trailed by one.  Thankfully the next batter hit the ball to Derek, who was having a nice day in the field, (except for a couple plays he literally dived out of the way of), and he stepped on first and threw over for the double play, game over, cardiac kids Doza hold on to win by one.” The Mendoza Line ends TNT’s run and is now one game outta first place in the South!

Over on Field one, it was Turkey’s Nest vs AT in a battle for 2nd Place of the North. On one of John Louis’ hits that actually did not leave the park the All Stars personal one man band played a piece that made John’s wide left turn into a little puddle and then gallop along the baseline before settling into second base on an errant throw look like a rendition of Marmaduke dancing Swan Lake. Drum dude’s a keeper.

Wanted to end with a couple of things. My neighbor Conrad and his family lost everything in a fire last weekend and a few of you asked to have the link posted to make donations. Conrad single handedly got everyone out of the burning building and to safety. Throw the guy $10 if you have a paypal account. fredafoundation@live.com
You can drop clothing donations at Tony’s Pizza on Graham and Conselyea. Also, Grandma Roses and RBar are having a benefit on Saturday, June 16th starting at 6PM to raise money for their family. Here is the Facebook invite https://www.facebook.com/#!/events/359875490732620/

Also, Now I want your attention here! PETE’S CANDYSTORE IS HAVING A BBQ!! This Sunday 5-9!!! AND it’s a benefit BBQ where all proceeds from the food and $2 for every Booklyn and Yuengling lager sold will be donated for field improvements and other grounds equipment.  So it’s even, like, RUDE if you don’t go! See you there!
