Tue, Apr 10, 2012

New home plates by the Commish!!! Not only did he design, screen and create the logo. They have also been gold leafed! Rumor has it the winner of the HR Leader Board and the Manager of the Championship Team will get one. Great work, Commish!

Hello WSL’ers!!

Opening Day is less than a week away! I know many of you have spent this off-season working out, or playing ball, getting in shape, wondering what could have been last season and getting ready to make this your breakout year. Well, mercifully and thankfully, the 2012 Season is almost upon us, which leads us to our 2012 Preview.

BUT! Before we begin, let’s take a quick look back at the 2011 Season.

Highlights: Spike Hill meets up with Black Betty in the championship and wins a nail biter 5-2 to knock off the 5 Time Defending Champs. Spike Hill manager Mike O’Malley finally realizing his century long dream of hoisting the WSL Trophy. Mike played for many years on Reel 2 Reel and finally kissed enough ass to get his own team into a 4 way tryout for the two last and newest spots in the WSL league in 2010! It took him only two years and a couple grand on bats to finally fulfill his destiny. And though we joke, Spike Hill has brought some fun and interesting characters to the WSL family. Congrats to you all!  The bulls-eye is on you guys this year!!

We held the first ever WSL HR Contest that went off without a hitch! Big congrats to our winner Mike Kornhauser! Unfortunately, over 3/4 of the league”s batting averages were ruined due to this contest and it didn’t fair well with the McCarren picnicers, to say the least. We’ll get it started right in week one this year so come out swingin’!

We had a crazed naked girl run through our Memorial Day Softball game and we really hope for her all the best (but I kinda hope she comes back again this year…kinda like the Easter Bunny). The story was even picked up by Gothamist and we had over 1,500 people visit our site in one day alone. As a side note 1,500 people realize we take this shit way too seriously.

We finally saw the arrival of the mythical WSL Monarch Butterfly who was supposed to give R2R luck to win it all. Unfortunately, that didn”t happen. So I recommend if you see the butterfly again this year to step on the fucker.

In Week 16, Gblack won the much coveted Cesar Cup! Which apparently, you can win by just giving Cesar a shit ton of beers. Congrats to Gblack! Also, that week we invented probably the best game since baseball was invented by Abner Doubleday himself. The Big Bud Bowlathon! Of course, the game also vanished the instant a 3 year old kid mastered the art of rolling a softball into a Turkey”s Nest Big Bud cup. Thanks, kid. For ruining dreams.

Last year was definitely a banner season in the Williamsburg Softball League, so now, let”s look forward to 2012 with our Season Preview! Below is a completely unsponsored, unedited, unapologetic look at the following season, all done during mine and Carly”s lunch break for your enjoyment.

Also, don”t forget to vote for who YOU think is going to win the North, South and the whole dang thing!

Now take it away!!

The North
Spike Hill: After winning it all last season, what”s in store for the defending champs? Have there been many off-season moves? Has O”Malley put together a dynasty that will wreak havoc for years to come? That”s a lot of questions. I just really didn”t know what else to say.

Good Co: Last season saw the end of Enid’s, the rise of The Phantom, the fall of the Phantom and the rise of Good Co. The biggest question for the boys and girl in pink are: What will they change their name to next? BQ Sports Equipmentors? The Hot Dog Lady Pushers?  Anyway, the 2011 Season ended uncolorfully for the Pink and White with a first round play-off loss. Will they stage a come back this season?? Can new little pinky, Cesar, have the big year at the plate that could help carry Good Co deep into the playoffs? Will Rob ever buy a pack of smokes?

Turkey’s Nest: Still probably the best and most solid players in the league on this team. We know they have the talent and the good looks, but can they finally win it all? Last season they made a great run to the North Division Championship, where they got knocked off by SH. This year, the race is going to be tight in the North….but they must not be too worried since we haven’t seen any of them out there practicing yet.

Reel2Reel: Perennial contenders R2R had a good season last year, but ran into the Nest in the semi-final game. R2R is as solid as they come and will continue to battle the Nest and SH for the top spot. Always a good team with solid defense and after two years of recruiting some young blood they have developed a deep bench. Never count Reel2Reel out.

A/T: Looks like A/T got promoted to the big leagues! A/T has seen some reworking over the past two seasons. Gblack has taken over the managing duties and pulled out some great moves, added some solid field and I think, yes…it’s just become official,  The All Stars have won the 2012 Spring Training Championship! Teams better not sleep on these guys. They are in mid-season form and have bullied there way into the Northside division. (We just got word the A/T will scrimmage anyone before their actual games because they”ve reserved the fields.)

Gibson: Gibson has had a rough couple of seasons, but they オンライン カジノ really look like they are turning things around. They’ve been out there practicing and “trying harder.” Besides, if they don’t win a playoff game Geoff will not buy them new uniforms for next season, and they love new uniforms! Will they beat YOU?

2nd Chance Saloon: Still looking to make the playoffs after missing them the last couple years, Al Biddy has been doing some recruiting by adding one liners to his vocabulary: It’s a windy city! Winning! Business Is Open! The WillyBbounce! Are all regulars, but we”re looking to see something new out there. How about some jokes? Try this: What do you get when A-Rod and Pujols collide?? Arodinmypujols! HAHA! Let me know if you need any help out there. (Holland solely holds all the rites to that joke.)

3 Kings: Congrats to 3Kings last year for making the playoffs and out of the first round in 2012 for their first time in their 4 years on the league. 3 Kings won the vote last pre-season for whose going to take home the prize! They got close, but were derailed by SH. Let”s see how they respond this year and if they can give everyone in the North a run for their money.

The South:
Black Betty: The Betty managed to get to the championship for the 6th time in a row. Now that the smoke has cleared the question will be, how will they respond to no longer being champs? Could anything dent the cockiness that is JB$? Does Camarra have a new game plan that will get them back to the big game for the seventh straight year? With that final loss will Jesse Ballgame finally wash out all those wins?

Soft Spot: Always one of the best defensive and funnest teams in the league, the Yetti”s are a tough out on the field and from the park. This year will be no different. The Yetti”s made it to the semi-finals in 2011. Will 2012 be their breakout year? Will fatherhood slow down Aaron the league butterfly? Will Pizza’s off-season surgery have him on the DL to start the year? What week will Winston come out of retirement this season?

RBar: One of the youngest, strongest teams in the league with the most lefties around, The Bums are looking to make a big stand after the previous season where they had their best record. Last year they played well, making it to the semi’s. They scored a much sought after D-Lo in her first free agency off-season and they are serious about 2012! Will they have too many concerts and AC trips during the season against tough teams?

Mendoza Line: Still looking for that elusive championship since 2004, Mendoza is back with their team of solid hitters and pretty decent defense. Will Godsy make a better attempt at winning the HR contest now that he knows you get a shirt? How many more kids can they have out there this season?  Can Christian please write more funny stuff about JB$ for the website?! The South is ripe for the burning (Gone with the Wind reference) so let”s see if the “Doza can come up big!

Pete’s Candy Store: Pete’s always comes out strong to start the year, they didn’t finish off as well in 2011 as they would have liked, but I hear they’ve really been whipping themselves in shape this off season. Will they bust out some new uniforms again opening day to make them the talk of the park? Will they ever have another league BBQ??

Turkey’s Teachers: After making it big in their first year two seasons ago, the Teachers had a rough 2011 as they didn”t make the playoffs. Now, it looks like they”ve restocked with some serious talent. Will the Teachers start bringing everyone to school? Will class start on April 15th? Will they ring the lunch bell?! CAN I STOP MAKING STUPID JOKES??

Clems: Always a fan favorite, but don’t let their kidding nature fool you. Breeze and his crew are healthy and ready to get down to business. Everyone is waiting for this team to start rattling off some wins, will this be the year they right the Battleship Clemmerica and start handing out some beatdowns??

Loggers: They”ve been moved to the South to test their mettle. Lots of off-season moves by White Lightening and Co. including rallying back to their old watering hole The new Loggers have been practicing in an undisclosed location planning on being the shockers on opening day. We”ll practically see a different team out there this season, so how they stack up will be anybody”s guess!

PLAYOFFS!!: There will be a new format this season in the playoffs. Every Team will make the post-season this year. They will be ranked from 1-16 depending on their final record, no matter what division they are in. Then we”ll play straight on through until the championship. This is very similar to one of the quads in the NCAA Final Four. Here”s an example. We hope this will add a lot more excitement to the playoffs as EVERYONE is included and no teams will be eliminated in mid-July. Also, with all matches being one game sudden death, there are a lot of opportunities for upsets. But, that”s not until Sept/Oct. So, play hard and get yourself up in the rankings!

Finally, if you”ve gotten this far, it”s time to choose your champions! Let your voices be heard!! We leave it up to you. Who will win the North, the South and the big dance?!  Now is the time to cast your votes!!
