2011 Playoff Bracket!

Well, here we are! Week One of the 2011 Williamsburg Playoffs!! In two weeks we will excitedly crown ourselves a new (or the same old!) WSL Champion!!

But first let’s talk about a contest that has already been won! We have our very first ever Williamsburg Softball League Home Run Champion! The contest really picked up some steam back in Week #11 when Bobby Knapp, an enormous youngster from RBar, tied it all up with Joe Godsy at 6. He then took the lead the very next week and shocked the Commish right out of homers for the rest of the 2011 season. In the following weeks Bobby really pulled ahead of the pack and secured himself with what seemed like an insurmountable lead of 10 home runs by the end of week#13! But little did we know that a sneaky little Turkey was slowly moving up the bomber ranks, until BAM! Week#19 Mikey Kornhauser blasts three dingers to take the lead and keep it, to take home the trophy Tshirt!! Send me your info, Mikey and congratulations!! Please don’t win for the next five years in a row!! Honorable mention to Greg Todd who chased these two all the way to the final weeks and ended with a tie for second with Slappy Knapp at 11 dingers apiece. Third place props go to Billy Guarin of 3 Kings with 8.

Okay, onto the 2011 Williamsburg Playoffs!

3 Kings vs. Good Co

3 Kings take 5th Place with a .500 record, Matty No-Times & his crew got their way so they are heading into the unextended post season with their full roster. The Kings reached the playoffs with key wins this season against the AT All Stars and Soft Spot during our cross division play and by hiding from Reel 2 Reel on both rain-outs… Seriously though, The Kings have 3 boys on the home run leader board that combined for a total of 21 bombs!! They will head on over to Good Co for the 11:30am opening play off match-up!

4th Place Good Co had a tough ride coming out of the end of this season. They also have a .500 record, but two of their 8 wins are against 3 Kings by 7 or more runs, which gives them the advantage. The Pinks also had a big W against Reel 2 Reel in week#3 and a lot of close losses against other playoff clubs. Good Co has two championships under their belt (2000 & 2005) and should never be counted out, unless they can’t keep their hands out of their celebratory coolers before 4:30pm if they pull off this victory Sunday.

Reel 2 Reel vs. Turkey’s Nest

3rd Place Reel 2 Reel is @ The Turkey’s Nest and this is just going to be a HELL of a game. They split their regular season meetings and they both split with Spike Hill. Reel 2 Reel has had a solid performance this year, as they do every year, but can 2011 finally be the season they make it happen? They’ve been in 2 Championships, including 2010, and they are definitely looking to fight their way back! Plus that butterfly stuff, remember??

Getting to the 2nd Place Turkey’s Nest, who are having a fantastic year of their own! Especially in this last stretch with their division where they just beat everybody, and also, let’s not forget their big game in MCU Park, plus they founded and created Big-Bud Bowling, and now, THIS! They actually have a real live celebrity on the team! If you have never met Dan Shafer, please head right over to The Nest after this game and ask for “Mr. Right Next Door.” Coincidence? You tell me ladies, fact or fiction?

Good Co/3 Kings vs. Spike Hill

The winner of the 11:30am game will come back to play 1st Place Spike Hill at 4:30pm. Spike Hill has taken a hell of a beatin’ from us all this year when it’s come to lookin’ for a good laugh, but when it’s come down to playin’ in the field… not so much. Spike Hill is in first place for one reason: They win games. They have knocked in 271 runs in the short 2011 regular season, that’s 36 runs more than anyone else to win the Best Offensive Team of the Year Award. At 13 – 3 they’ve already beat Good Co & 3 Kings twice apiece this year. I’m just sayin’…

A/T All Stars vs. Soft Spot Yetis

5th Place is awarded to the A/T All Stars and applause are in order! Gerald and Co has taken this team and really turned it around. They might have started out with a thousand hopefuls, but whatever they did to get to here has paid off. They had big wins splitting games with Betty & RBar. They got a little tripped up in the cross division play which may have hurt their momentum heading into their last division stint, but let’s see what they’ve got in there first trip back to the playoffs since, well, I guess that season when everyone went, right?

But they have to get past the 4th place Soft Spot Yetis, who beat AT twice in the regular season. Soft Spot might have changed sponsors this year, but it’s still the same fun loving group that we can never get to leave the park! So whether the Yeti’s or AT advances, Doza & RBar should expect some heckling from under the big tree during the 2pm’er.

Rbar vs. Mendoza Line

3rd Place RBar is next up against Mendoza Line. The Bums had a slower than usual start, but rallied back to sweep the North division, including Spike Hill, and finish off with a few very nice performances. They also cap off the regular season with the lowest runs allowed @ 133! Winning the Best Defensive Team of the Year Award. Congratulations! RBar has never made it to the championship game but I’ll tell you, they can taste it.

Mendoza Line lands in 2nd Place. They had a great season, splitting games with Betty and sweeping the North as well, with big wins against The Nest & Reel 2 Reel. BUT they had a tough time with RBar this year, falling to them twice, so I’m sure that The Bums are not their first choice of playoff opponents. Hopefully, they took notes!

A/T All Stars/Soft Spot Yetis vs. Black Betty

The winner of the Soft Spot/AT game comes back at 4:30pm to earn the first shot at the five time defending champs, 1st Place Black Betty! Black Betty also had a some kinks to work out this spring, well until week #2 anyway, after that they beat everybody they faced except Spike Hill and Clems to earn them first place in their division. Their bench is deep and their competitive drive is deeper. Whoever meets them in this match-up best not think that for Betty, “5 is enough.”

So there you have it! Congrats to the 2011 teams that made it in and good luck to you ALL! Let’s all get our pop-up shades and coolers and get out there and root these teams on folks!  ‘Cause you know you still aint watchin’ preseason football.
