Week 14 – Preview

Fri, Jun 24, 2011

By Carly and Holland.

Here we are! Week #14 already, and all heading back to meet our division Week #1 opponents. The schedule this season rocks and it will be interesting to see how we fair against the clubs that we started the season out with now that we all got the kinks out and are in as good a form as our old butts are gunna get for 2011!

But, before we begin this week’s recap, let’s look at the year in review so far:

Sept. 25th, 2010: Holland gets control of the WSL website. Plans world domination. First order of business: Update and change the history section of the site to talk all about Black Betty.

Feb. 18th, 2011: Holland heads to the field to do pick up. Except this is what the field looks like. Goes home and cries.

March 17th, 2011: Tommy Flag makes first appearance on the WSL Site.

March 21st, 2011: The Commish makes first post on WSL site. Gets bored. Goes and makes pies. Spawns “dick in pie” jokes across the nation that get old in record time.

March 27th, 2011: Opening Day in 28 degrees!! Spike Hill shows up with new players from the M4M section on CraigsList that can “go deep” and “crush.” 3 Kings wins the vote for who is going to win the league, then show up in Black Betty colors.

May 6th, 2011: Andy Mac is guest preview writer makes predictions. Goes 2 for 7.

May 25th, 2011: People from all around the world marvel at Rainbow Sprinkles in the Moon.

May 31st, 2011: Memorial Day Softball gets interrupted by CB. The post gets picked up by Gothamist, WSL site gets over a thousand hits in one day. People all over the globe realize we take co-ed softball waaaaaaay too seriously. But we still don’t care.

June 7th, 2011: Turkey’s vs. Turkey’s. Turkey’s win. Go celebrate victory at The Gibson.

June 10th, 2011: The first ever WSL Home Run Leader Board is launched. Bobby launches HR after HR.

And there you have it! This looks to be a great season so far as we come around one last time before we roar into the playoffs.

In the North, as expected, Spike Hill has been making mincemeat of the competition scoring the most runs in the leagues and only dropping one. Will they be able to keep up the same pace in the final stretch of the season?? Reel2Reel and Turkey’s Nest are hot on their tails, followed by Good Co and 3Kings. The playoff’s are sure to be exciting as all teams seem to step up their game in the post-season. Will Spike Hill be able to get past the first round?? Will Reel2Reel defend their North Division title and get back to the big dance?? Should I really have this third cup of coffee??

In the South, the division is tight. Black Betty and Mendoza Line hold the top spot, with the tie breaker only going to The Betty due to Runs Against. But with RBar, Pete’s, newly revamped AT and Soft Spot, the first and sixth place are only separated by 2 games. The playoff’s are going to be exciting this year. Which team will step up to knock The Betty off their throne for the first time in 5 years? Mendoza Line and AT have already beaten The Betty. Rbar’s defense is best in the league! And with only the final stretch left, which team will take control of the South??

But, let’s not get ahead of ourselves, Week 14 is headed our way, so let’s get to the preview!

Starting out the day it’s the “Last place” Gibson vs. 2nd “No, you used up your last” Chance! Let’s face it, us peeps aint makin’ the playoffs, so let’s get out there and have a good time! We still have 7 more weeks to soak up the beer & sun so let’s not waste it on regrets! Instead let’s sweat-out our Melissa Bday BBQ & Cornhole Tourney hangovers in a fun match between friends and then head over to Lexi’s store opening to keep the good times rolling! In the South, Soft Spot sent Battleship Clemerica sailing with a ten run loss out of week one, but Markowski is back at short and since then their average runs against has dropped by a solid 7 per game. The Yeti’s need this win to keep pace with the tightly contested South!

AT and Pete’s @ 1PM…hmmmm…AT didn’t fare well with the North during Inter Division Play while Pete’s went .500. Pete’s won their last match up by 3, and AT has beat some good teams since then, but the All-Stars have also lost their last three. The Candystore needs to have a league BBQ! On the opposite field the 3 Kings give 4th Down another shot. The Loggers lost by 4 in their last meeting and aren’t looking to good playoff-wise. The Kings are making a mid-season streak with 3 outta 4 wins in the South.

At 3PM Good Co & The Turkey’s Nest meet again. Good Co lost by 5 to The Nest in Week #1 and Good Co is also on a 3 game losing streak, but they are hosting the party of the season this Saturday night, so let’s see what kinda shape they’re in at game time before we make our predictions on the outcome here. On field 2, The Betty and Mendoza match up again. Mendoza took down The Betty in Week 1 in a crazy close game of 19-18. Both teams have had their ups and downs this season and whoever wins this game will hold sole possession of the North.

At 5pm we have Reel2Reel vs. Spike Hill. A fantastic grudge match that has been voted by me and my cup of coffee as Game of the Week!! We all know the history between these two teams with players defecting R2R to play for SH and the promise of free smoothies and championships. So far, all SH can say is “dang these smoothies are good, right #15?” Reel2Reel took down SH in the playoff’s last year, but SH roared back in the opening game of the season this year 13-6. Let’s see what happens this weekend.

In the other final game of the day, RBar and Bobby take on Turkey’s Nest Teachers. Rbar lost their opening game of the year to the Teachers 10-7 and look to get their redemption and revenge. We think if TNT comes out to this song they’ll put up a heck of a fight:

But RBar is swinging away and on a 4 game winning streak and their confidence is surging. Should be a good game.

And there you have it!! 2/3 of the season is in the books. We come to the final stretch of the 2011 Season before we blast into the playoff’s. Keep playing hard. And of course, keep winning.

Carly & Holland
