Week 11 – Recap

Tue, Jun 7, 2011

We had some great games going and some great wins this weekend, to say the least!

It was right back to down to softball business in McCarren Park on Sunday! All the games got started on schedule this week thanks to a combined effort from the entire Repetti roster, fresh off the concrete, and the morning Umps. They had the lines all laid-out and both fields ready for play in a record time of 9.47 minutes. I swear the wheels on the chalk cart were smoking when they all finally disappeared into the Nest.

Okay, let’s dive right in…

11AM
The Yeti’s started right off on the Gibson with a handful of runs scored in the 2nd inning and it pretty much played along those lines until the 7th, when the Gibson woke-up and came back from a 10-1 deficit to within one with a few homers! 11-9 heading into the 9th, Anthony Pizza got beamed in the noggin by a line drive that damn near knocked him out! Thankfully, he not only recovered but his tough, little butt, finished pitching the game! Unfortunately, it knocked the Brooklyn accent out of him and Pizza is no longer allowed in RBar, since that obviously makes him a hipster. Star-struck, the Gibson fell short and lost this one by a respectable one run.

Over on Field B, The well rested 3 Kings came right out of the dug-out with their A game and put up 4 in the first against AT. They continued with some solid D and had a 9-1 lead in the 6th when the All Stars, leaders of the tough South, rallied together for 3 more. The Kings, not the least bit intimidated, held them after that and went on to win it by a solid 6, as they lift to a .375 average. AT All Stars were seen busy on their calculators for the rest of the afternoon.

1PM
2nd Chance couldn’t handle the confidence of those RBar Bums coming off their biggest win of the season. RBar moves into the melee of the top of the South by dominating the 86ers in a 27-9 showing.

Over on the other side…The Nest, one turkey down, had us all on the edge of our coolers heading into the 4th with a three run deficit. But, The Turkey’s Teachers gave-up the big inning of 6 runs here to the original club and never took it back; 11-6 Final. The Nest secures a solid second place spot in the North and The Teachers fall into a tie with Clems for last place in the South. Of course, Jordan was as gracious as ever post-game giving them a little holler “Hey, you guys are welcome to come have a drink with us at OUR bar.” The Teacher’s declined.

3PM
‘Doza vs Reel 2 Reel. I think these guys know each others playbooks better than the Patriots/Jets! So, as expected, they both stepped-up with flawless defense and kept it close all day. Godsy launched a laser solo shot into the LC gap which was answered in the 6th by R2R’s Big Man, Greg Todd. The pitching was tight in this match-up, and Mark gave up only two hits over the last six innings. Unfortunately one of them was a blast to RF by opposing hurler Pete Hoffman that turned out to be the game winner. ‘Doza finishes off their 5th single-run contest of the season going 3-2 over that stretch. Reel 2 Reel holds down 4th place in the North.

In the Editors pick for Game Of The Week, Spike Hill finally got to show Black Betty, and the rest of the league, exactly who the hell they are…and they didn’t disappoint. It was sensational D by both going into the 3rd with a 0-0 tie when Spike Hill broke through for 8 runs on a combo of solid line drives, bloop hits and a dinger by short stop Lebron. Betty fought back with two solo home runs by Big Dave & Benny and then kept stringing hit’s together to set-up the only one Andy Becker for a huge Grand Slam to tie it all up in the 6th. Spike Hill, however, showing no signs of pressure, pushed another run across in the bottom of the 7th, and then escaped the top of the 8th on a diving catch in RF by their defensive MVP Kevin Mulcahy. Betty gave up 4 more runs to the Spike Hill boys & girls in the bottom of the inning to make it 13-8 and ended it 4 runs shy for their first loss since week #2!! Big Congrats to O’Malley and his club on a well fought out victory!! They remain in control of the North.

5PM
CLEMERICA wins two out of their last three?! Sign of the Apocalypse?? (Even I can’t believe that I tried to run that joke one more time.) But hell no! Clem’s played an errorless game and beat out Loggers with a solid performance for a well deserved win. They have also “guaranteed” victory next week against 2nd Chance, so we’ll all be watching!

In the final showdown of the day, Pete’s and Good Co battled it out on field one into extra innings. The post game went into the wee hours as expected with everyone converging at the Candy Store to kick-it old school style Sunday night. Unfortunately, this has me still awaiting a recap from somebody, anybody….okay, this is what I’ve got so far: Pete’s won.

I wanted to end this week by saying that you’ve all been sooo freakin’ awesome in your support of my recaps and previews!! I’m feeling a lot of love on the league with all the compliments and encouragement, but I owe more credit to all of YOU who send me game details than I have been giving! This is a group effort! Also, PLEASE, if you feel that your team is getting slighted than just send me your side of the story and I’ll get your shout-outs in! I’m trying to be fair to everyone and just give us all some laughs as a break to the daily grind. ALL emails are welcome, whether I know you or not!

Now quit your whinin’,
