WSL 2011 Season. A Message from the Commish.

Mon, Mar 21, 2011

Hello players, coaches, managers and fans of the Williamsburg Softball League! The 2011 Season is almost upon us, so I wanted to reach out with some information about the upcoming season.

The Season: Starts on March 27th. The schedule is complete, I will likely be posting it on the website within a week.

We only received 21 weeks this year. This is almost a month less than last year. We will be playing on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day this year. We have no choice. Also, this means there will be new rules re: rainouts and cancellations, which I will get to when I post the schedule.

The Divisions: The divisions are staying the same, however, the interdivision games will be different. You may not know this, but you played exactly half of your opposite division last year, this year, you will play the other half + your division twice which = 18 games.

Playoffs will be the same, division champs play for the championship, etc.

Umpires: Like last year we will be using our own players for umps and we need more umpires!!! As you know we lost a few to people moving, the war, the Nest, so if you’re interested in umping, please contact me.

Twitter Updates: There is now a Twitter feed for the league. It is on the homepage on the right hand side. This will let you know if there are rainouts, delays, etc… hopefully this will help you know whether we are playing or not due to weather. Please try to keep the calls to the minimum and come to the site to view the tweet and tell your team. Or just have your players view the site.

Garbage, Public Urination & Bad Behavior: Apparently, with the addition of the new buildings adjacent to McCarren Park, there has been an increase in complaints on trash, public urination, and bad behavior.

I think we’ve been pretty tame with the behavior and I don’t remember too many public pissers, but we do have to be careful with the garbage. I need the managers to instruct their team to clean up after every game, but please, as players, we ALL need to be responsible for this. The city is not joking around. The first offense is $1000 bucks, and the second offense is they pull our permits, which they want to do anyway, so please be proactive and bring a heavy duty garbage bag in case the nearest trash can is overflowing, pick up your garbage, tie a good knot and leave it by the trashcan. That’s really the best we can do. I’ll see if I can get a bulk rate on bags and pass them out or something, but until then, stuff one in your equipment bag just in case.

Smoking. THERE’S NO SMOKING IN THE PARKS ANY MORE! You need to inform your team of that, because if they come over to write you a ticket, it could perhaps become compounded when they see your beer and trash.

Any comments or questions or if I need to address any rules, conduct, please email me directly and I will compile and respond to all at once on a weekly (or so) basis.

Thanks, see you soon.
