Cross League Party at Pete’s, Friday, June 12

Thu, May 28, 2009

Dear Saturday and Sunday Softball Leagues,

Let’s stop hating on each other and get together for a cross-league party on Friday night, June 12, at Pete’s Candy Store, for FREE BBQ and CHEAP BEER. Aside from normalizing relations between the two leagues, I’d like to throw our collective support behind Evan Thies, who’s running to represent our council district (the Fightin’ 33rd, which includes Williamsburg and Greenpoint) on the New York City Council. Aside from being an excellent person to drink beer and watch a baseball game with at the Turkey’s Nest (I know this because I’ve done it), Evan has been a great friend to the league. As a top aide to the local council member (the office he’s now running for) and chair of our local community board’s environment committee, Evan helped establish the Sunday league as regular permit holders, and has been instrumental in bringing in City funds to improve and maintain McCarren Park. On a side note, Evan is also very good personal friends with legendary A/T All Star Cindy “Softball” Price, and one-time WSL co-commish Erik Paulsen.

From 7 to 9 on June 12, Evan will be dishing out free BBQ in the backyard of Pete’s (709 Lorimer St.), and Andy McDowell, co-owner of Pete’s Candy Store and founder of the Atomic Fireballs Softball Club (one of the original teams of the WSL), will be offering $2 pints of Yuengling on Evan’s behalf.

This should be a very fun night. And please, don’t think of this as a buttoned-down political campaign event, nor a fundraiser (which it definitely is not), but rather, a big softball party with free BBQ and cheap beer, and a chance to meet someone who, as the future representative of our city council district, will act as a great advocate and better friend to both our leagues.

All best,
Jordan Heller

Founding member of the Saturday Matchless team /
Wednesday Night Pick-Up Commish
